The first known written mention of Nilgiris is in the 11th century. It was ceded to the East India Company in 1799, but was unknown to the British until 1818. The first european official and settler was John Sullivan, who, as an avid gardener introduced a number of European and South African plant varieties. Nilgiris means "blue mountains".
