Iranian Turks refers to Iranians who speak Turkic languages.

History

Main article: Azeri § Origins

The origin of Iranian Turks is disputed. Some beleive that they are the descendant of Medes and migrated to the Iranian plateau with the Persians and later adopted the Turkic language, others suggest that they are basically central Asian Turks who had migrated to Iran after the "Aryan" tribe invasion of Iran. There is also a growing evidence that suggests Azeri people have caucasian origin.

Turkic groups in Iran

Iranian Turks speak Azeri as their mother tongue, many of which also speak Turkish.

Most of Iranian Turks are Azeris. There are, however, many Turkish speaking Iranians live in all other provinces, especially in central and southern provinces of Iran. They probably have migrated from areas of Azerbaijan during the last 5-6 centuries BC or more and have their own unique culture and identity that is a mixed of what they inherited and the local surrounding culture.

Furthermore, Turkmen living primarily in Golestan and Norht Khorasan Provinces account for around 2,000,000 people.
