This page contains a detailed list of the characters from the manga series Hunter × Hunter.
Main characters
Gon Freecs (ゴン=フリークス)
- Birthday - 5 May
- Place of birth - Whale Island
- Height - 154cm
- Weight - 49kg
- Blood Type - O
- Hatsu - Reinforcement (Kyouka)
The son of the legendary Hunter Ging Freecs, Gon was left in the care of his aunt since infancy, and has never met his father since. During his youth, Gon met another Hunter, Kite, who was once Ging's apprentice. That fateful meeting made Gon all the more intrigued to meet his father, and also gave him the hope and inspiration to take the Hunter license.
Talents: A naturally optimistic youth, Gon's friendliness and innocence has charmed and won many trusted friends to his side, including Kurapica and Killua. With an uncanny and extraordinary sense of smell, taste and hearing, Gon's instinct has aided his friends through many tough obstacles during the Hunter exam. Gon has another remarkable talent, being able to talk to and befriend with animals easily.
Fighting Ability: Gon has an unusual choice of a weapon, which is a fishing rod. Though it doesn't deal much damage to his enemies, Gon is able to accurately swing and 'hook' it onto targets, proving itself to be useful time and time again.
Nen ability: Out of the 6 main nen types, Gon proves to be a reinforcement user. People belonging to such a category excel in attack and defense, and also have the ability to heal themselves quickly. Building on this type, Gon has sharpened his use of nen, and has managed to increase his attack power with his fists, dealing more damage than before.
His hatsu is a special punch called Jajanken .
- Rock (Guu) - Used to attack on the outside of someone's body with his fist. It's a close range attack.
- Paper (Paa) - Used to attack someone's inner organs, also done with his fist. It's a long distance attack.
- Scissors(Shi) - Used to attack a specific body part, done with two fingers. It's a middle distance attack.
Note on the name of his ability:
Gon originally did not intend for his ability to be called Jajanken; he originally named it Janken. However, when Knuckles asked him what his ability was called, he stuttered and said "Ja-janken" instead of "Janken", leading Knuckles to believe that the ability was called Jajanken.
Killua Zoldyck (キルア=ゾルディック)
- Birthday -7 July
- Place of birth - Kukulu Mountain
- Height - 158cm
- Weight - 49kg
- Blood Type - B
- Nen Type - Transformation (Henka)
Killua was born to a family of renowned assassins, the Zoldyck family. Showing great promise from birth, Killua has already mastered many killing techniques at a tender age, and is set to be one of the best assassins the family has produced. Bored and tired of killing, Killua unexpectedly rebelled against his family, injuring both his mother and brother, and ran away to join the Hunter exam. Meeting with Gon during the first obstacle, Killua saw Gon as a friendly competitor, and ended up becoming fast friends.
Attributes: From the outside, Killua seems just to be the boy next door, cheeky, cheerful and full of mischievous ideas. However, his ruthlessness and aptitude in killing shows the other side of him--deadly, violent and bloodthirsty. Having been repeatedly tortured since birth, Killua has been conditioned to possess extreme tolerance for poison, electrocution and pain. Possessing both extraordinary agility and strength to match, Killua is one mean killing machine--definitely not one to be trifled with, as many of his adverseries had seen. However, his greatest flaw is to fear characters more powerful than him, like his elder brother.
Fighting ability: Killua does not use any weapons in combat. Instead, he uses his hands that change into razor sharp claws at will, delivering a swift and fatal attack, that can rip out beating hearts or behead opponents in a split second.
Nen Ability: As an transformation type, who can transform the nen into any substance at their will, Killua is busily practising this ability. So far, he has managed to successfully transform his surrounding nen into an electrically charged form, producing volts of electricity. The inspiration for this has been attributed to the daily doses of shock therapy he received at home, a favourite torture device of his brother, Milluki.
Kurapika Kuruta (クラピカ=クルタ)
- Birthday - 4 April
- Place of birth - Kuruta tribe
- Height - 171cm
- Weight - 59kg
- Blood Type - AB
- Hatsu - Materialization (Gugenka) in his normal state. Specialization (Tokushitsu) in his scarlet eyes state.
Kurapika is a member of the Kuruta tribe, a reticient group of people that chose to live in obscurity. They possess a pair of eyes that turn flaming red in times of anger or emotional agitation. The legendary brilliance of such scarlet eyes caused them to be in high demand as a collector's treasure. A few years ago, the Phantom Troupe (Genei Ryodan) came to Kurapika's hometown and massacred all the members of his tribe, leaving behind scores of dead bodies with eyes gorged out in their wake. As the last surviving member of his tribe, Kurapica vows to gain back all the stolen eyes of his people, by tracking the Phantom Troupe down and seeking revenge, even if he must sacrifice his life in the process.
Personality: Kurapika is a level headed and intelligent individual, possessing knowledge of a great variety of things. Of sound judgement, his in-depth and cool analysis has saved his friends from the brink of death many times. Needless to say, his quickmindedness and bargaining technique has also saved him from being killed by oppressively powerful enemies like Hisoka.
Nen Abilities: Kurapika is a materialization user, one that can fashion objects that act according to his imagination. The weapon that he creates is a unique one--extending from his fingers of his right hand are five chains, which were specially created to deal vengeance upon the Phantom Troupe. When Kurapika's eyes turn red (his scarlet eye state), his nen ability shifts from materialization to specialization. His attack, defense and accuracy in all nen abilities would be increased to 100% efficiency, making him virtually invincible during this span of time.
To increase his effectiveness against the formidable Phantom Troupe, Kurapika places strict restrictions on the usage of his nen blades:
Use of each chain:
- Thumb - Holy Chain
- Shaped like a cross, it cures wounds by drawing from the Kyouka ability. When Kurapica is in tokushitsu, it can heal serious injuries in seconds.
- Third finger - Chain Jail
- Wraps around enemies, restricting movement. Also forcefully causes captured person to enter zetsu (they are unable to release their nen through there shouko, or nen openings, in this state). This chain is restricted in that it can only be used to deal with Phantom Troupe (Genei Ryodan) members, and if the restriction is violated, Kurapika will die.
- Fourth finger - Dowsing Chain
- Kurapika uses this frequently under normal situations, for defense and attack purposes. It is also useful for other investigative activities, like determining the location of missing individuals.
- Small finger - Judgement Chain
- A small nen blade enters the victim's body and stabs the heart. Kurapica sets a condition and if the victim breaches it, he would lose his life. Only can be of use when Kurapica is in tokushitsu.
The purpose of the chain on his index finger has yet to be revealed.
Other notes Yoshihiro Togashi was said to have gotten the inspiration for Kurapika's red eyes from the insect ohmu, which was a creation of Hayao Miyazaki from the manga and later anime, Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind. A special feature of the large insect is that its many eyes turn from calm blue to fiery red when enraged.
Leorio (レオリオ)
- Birthday - 3 March
- Place of birth - Unknown
- Height - 193cm
- Weight - 85kg
- Blood Type - O
- Nen Type - Emission (Houshutsu)
Much is unknown about Leorio. What we do know is that he once lost a close friend to a debilitating illness. Leorio feels deeply remorseful about not saving his friend, due to lack of money and knowledge in curing the illness. Thus, he aspires to become a doctor--one that not only cures the ill of their disease, but also waives the fee for the poor. In this light, his outwardly superficial reason to join the Hunter Exams in the pursuit of great wealth has a nobler justification--the money he gains is used not only to fund for his medical school fees, but also to pay for the medicine and other miscellaneous expenditures when treating the poor.
(N.B: When asked for his main reason for joining the Hunter Exam, his immediate reply was to earn lots of money, becoming rich, which greatly annoyed Kurapica initially)
Personality: Leorio is not one who balks and retreats when faced against overwhelming odds in battle. A loyal, trustworthy ally who greatly values the ties of friendship, he acts like the 'big brother' of the group. However, his impulsive and brash nature has sometimes caused more trouble to people around him. Another flair he has is his ability to 'straight-talk' past any situation at hand.
Fighting Ability: Leorio is a good fighter in his own state. His weapon of choice is a long pocket knife which he can use very fastly.
(N.B: As in the arm-wresting stall he managed to set-up and become the spokesperson for) Bargaining is one of his strengths, some say inherent nature, as he is able to haggle his way with shopkeepers and cut prices down to a unimaginable level.
(N.B: When Gon and Killua wanted to purchase handphones at Auction City, Leorio managed to cut down its original price by about 1/3, and bragged that his was bought at a cheaper price. Passers-by even clapped and cheered during the successful purchase!)
Hisoka (ヒソカ)
- Birthday- unknown
- Place of birth - Unknown
- Height - 187cm
- Weight - 91kg
- Blood Type - B
- Nen Type - Transformation (Henka)
Still a great mystery, no one knows where he came from or who he really is. Even Hisoka may not even know himself, preferring to forget his past.
Attributes: An erratic, volatile, killing machine that enjoys the act of killing, especially people whom he has targeted as victims, one being Gon. Thinks he's the best fighter in the world, and always seeks to challenge anybody who appears to be equally powerful as him. He has set his current sight on Kuroro, the leader of the Brigade, finding him to be a worthy opponent which he would want to <kill> with relish.
Fighting Ability: Unarguably one of the best fighters in the world, Hisoka is not only deadly in normal attacks, but has many tricks up his sleeve--his deviousness and volatility has made many opponents difficult to anticipate his next move, and this has led to him winning many battles. Using poker cards as his weapens, he throws them with ease and deadly accuracy, which cut into enemy flesh like a knife to butter. Hisoka up to his dirty tricks again Nen Ability
Hisoka, an transformation nen user, has served him well on numerous occasions, and especially compliments his devious nature. While fighting with Kastro, he once fooled everyone by masking his supposedly chopped arms with nen. Unlike most nen users who only have one hatsu, Hisoka has developed two:
Dokiri Texture: He can change the texture of anything with this hatsu. For instance, he once changed the words on the prediction that Kuroro's stolen ability wrote for him so that he could fool the Phantom Troupe (Genei Ryodan) into thinking that he was innocent. He did the same thing in Greed Island to fool Gon and Killua into thinking that the Ryodan weren't in Greed Island.
Bungee Gum: Hisoka uses nen to alter its consistency into a sticky and gluish substance that is very much like bubble gum, to pull back opponents within punching range for a flurry of rebound pummels.
Other notes: Interpretation of his name - Hisoka in kanji can mean "secret" or "mysterious"; it fits his elusive personnage.
Phantom Troupe (also known as the 'Genei Ryodan')
Kuroro Lucifer (クロロ=ルシルフル)
- Height - 177cm
- Weight - 68kg
- Age - 26
- Blood type - AB
- Nen Type - Specialization (Tokushitsu)
This enigmatic figure is the head of the Phantom Brigade. Appearance-wise, he is a cool and handsome looking young man, immaculately groomed and well-dressed, complete with an exquisite fur coat that he always wears.
Kuroro seems to be a rather book-loving figure, as he's always seen holding a tome and reading it intently. He seems to be a silent and introspective figure, one who plans ideas ahead of him, which reminds me a lot of Kurapica. In fact, you could call him Kurapica's contrasting counterpart, possessing rather similar traits but using it for opposing purposes- for masterminding flawless criminal activities.
Although being the leader of the team, Kuroro has no qualms about losing his life for the sake of the Brigade's continued survival, as he has mentioned this before to the members, and this has no doubt led to increasing faith and loyalty in him and his decisions. Although he is always accompanied by 2 other members that act as bodyguards during his meetings with the brigade, Kuroro seems to be very trusting of his members and is oblivious to Hisoka's hidden intentions.
With the exception of Hisoka, it seems that the rest of the brigade members have pledged their unswerving loyalty to Kuroro. Much of this faith, no doubt, is due to the selfless leadership and ingenious strategic decisions that have enabled the Phantom Brigade to thrive, crime after crime.
Fighting Ability: One often wonders of Kuroro's fighting abilities, as his perceived bookish attitude raises doubts about his fighting competence. It turns out that the book he always carry along with him is the most crucial -and useful- weapon that anyone could possess. For Kuroro is a 'materialise' person- the book was fashioned from his imagination. Recorded within its pages are all the unique nen abilities that he has managed to 'rob' thus far, which had to be done under very stringent conditions. All that is required is for Kuroro to flip open a certain page, and summon up the ability he so wishes to use.
This pilfering ability of his has enabled Kuroro to collect a vast repertoire of interesting nen abilities, such as a fish monster that can sustain the life of its victim even after consuming all of its internal organs and body parts; as well as an angelic spirit that can foretell the future fate of an individual.
In terms of actual physical fighting capability, he is quite strong, for he is able to effectively defend against the combined attacks of both Zeno and Silva, Killua's grandfather and father respectively, who are known as the most effective assassins in the world.
Skill Hunter: Skill Hunter (also known as the Quintessence of Theft) - Enables him to rob any nen ability for his own use, causing the victim to be unable to use it any longer. The stolen ability will be recorded in the pages of his materialised book 'Skill Hunter', with Kuroro able to call up the ability to utilize later.
The usage of the pilfered abilities are regardless governed by very strict regulations:
- A) He must satisfy 4 conditions to successfully steal the victim's ability:
- 1. Witness the nen ability in action.
- 2. Enquire about the ability; the victim must answer about it in return.
- 3. Victim's hand must touch the palm print on Kuroro's book cover.
- 4. Steps 1 to 3 must be completed within an hour.
- B) To use the abilities, Kuroro must materialise the book and hold it in his right hand. The page containing the victim's ability must be kept open throughout the process.
- C) Once the victim dies, the ability will also be deleted from the pages.
Bonorenofu
- Age - 30
- Weight - 85kg
- Height - 185cm
- Nen Type - Unknown
- Blood Type - AB
Nen Ability: He plays music through the holes on his skin during battle. He is from the Gyudondondo tribe, and when the boys are 3 years old, needles are poked into their body. The needles are slowly replaced with bigger sticks, until holes are created. The people of this tribe are called "dancing warriors". Different sounds are created depending on the holes.
Feitan
- Age - 28
- Weight - 45kg
- Height - 155cm
- Nen Type - Transformation (Henka)
- Blood Type - Unknown
A rather mysterious member of the Phantom Troupe, Feitan is attired in what one would expect from a bandit-- dark clothes with a skullhead scarf that covers his mouth. His droopy eyes either hints about his boredom or his affinity to sleep. Silence is golden--for Feitan seldom speaks.
Feitan kills people in the blink of an eye, shown when he tore off several people's heads in a massacre at Yorkshin. His movement is so fast that you don't even see the flash of the weapon or the attack he used--only a dead body remains.
Nen Abilities - Pain Packer: Pain Packer allows Feitan to transform all of the damage that he has received into a minitature sun that burns the victim painfully to death. While using this ability, he can also transform Nen into armor to protect himself from the heat.
Franklin
- Nen Type - Emission (Houshutsu)
- Age - 33
- Weight - 127 kg
- Height - 219 cm
A hulking, Frankensteinian monster is what Franklin appears to be, complete with scars and sewn-up wounds that ravage his face. It does seem though, that beneath his harsh exterior lies a small, caring spot in his character, as Franklin acts as a care-giver to Shizuku, and shows concern of her well-being.
Nen Ability - Double Machine Gun: Franklin is a human machine gun, as his fingers cap off to reveal chambers where he channels his nen that shoot out as bullets. This power has been shown to wipe out a room full of people very quickly.
Kurotopi
- Nen Type - Materialization (Gugenka)
- Age - 25
The most distinctive thing about Kurotopi is his haggard appearance. A thick and messy mane of hair flops down his face, obscuring everything except for an occassional glimpse of his eyeball.
Nen Ability - Gallery Fake: Kurotopi's nen ability allows him to replicate any object he is in contact with accurately, as long as it isn't living or the object does not have nen sealed into it. Be it cards, antiques, or even buildings, all would be faithfully replicated under Kuroro's instruction. The copied object disappears in a day's time. However, before ceasing to exist, Kurotopi can track the movements of each and every replicated object.
Machi
- Nen Type - Transformation (Henka)
- Age - 24
- Weight - 48 kg
- Height - 159 cm
- Blood Type - A
Not known to show much emotion, Machi seems to be one of the most cold members of the Phantom Troupe. The only person she has shown some feeling to was Kuroro, the leader of the Phantom Troupe. Hisoka seems to have an occasional interest with her, although it's hard to see whether it's genuine, given Hisoka's unpredictability. Machi also doesn't appear to be interested a single bit, spurning his advances on all occasions.
Nen Ability: Machi's nen is shaped into thin wispy-long threads which she uses in a variety of ways, such as seaming together old wounds to heal them, repairing back dislodged limbs like what she did for Hisoka, or like a hangman's noose that strangles enemies with a tug. Her thread's strength is proportional to the length. The longer the thread she makes, the easier it is to break.
Nobunaga
- Nen Type - Reinforcement (Kyouka)
- Age - 30
- Weight - 75 kg
- Height - 183 cm
Like one of the ronin warriors in Edo period Japan, Nobunaga comes complete with a long Japanese sword that he uses with great finesse and skill. Nobunaga's speciality is the unparalleled use of the sword in executing enemies.
Nobunaga's En: Supplementing his swordfighting skills is the use of En in creating a circular boundary that can detect the slightest of movements of his opponents. Once the opponent steps into this boundary, an immediate retaliation can be expected from Nobunaga. His Nen ability is currently unknown.
Shalnark
- Nen Type - Manipulation (Sousa)
- Age - 24
- Weight - 72 kg
- Height - 180 cm
- Blood Type - O
With blond hair and baby blue eyes, Shalnark seems to be a guileless and innocent boy straight out from the realm of shoujo manga. But see him in action with the rest of the Phantom Brigade and that thought is dispelled. Shalnark is one of the most intelligent and quick-thinking members in the group--being adept at using the computer and at information gathering, providing the brains behind the brawn. Shalnark is also a Hunter, so he has the ability to gain access to certain information that could be potentially useful in the Phantom Troupe.
Nen Abilities
Black Voice: Shalnark is able to control the physical movements of any person he has targeted, as long as he has a special antenna on them. This is done via a cellphone interface in which he remotely controls other people from a distance, while pointing the antenna at one he placed on the person.
Auto Mode: When Shalnark places an antenna on himself, he temporarily gains immense strength. However, he can only control himself through giving himself instructions and cannot withdraw from Auto Mode until he has accomplished the task. After going out of Auto Mode, Shalnark cannot move for two days. He also doesn't retain any memory from what happened in that state.
Shizuku
- Nen Type - Materialization (Gugenka)
- Age - 19
- Weight - 45 kg
- Height - 160 cm
Someone with a quiet disposition and polite personality seems to sum up most people's initial impression of the cute bespectacled girl. However, don't be beguiled by her unassuming and blurred appearance--as she is an active member of the Phantom Troupe and would not think twice about killing any adversary.
Nen Ability - Deme-chan: Shizuku uses her nen to create a self-styled vacuum cleaner (Nicknamed "Deme-chan") that is able to consume any inanimate matter under her command. This has proven very useful in many occasions for cleaning up evidence that the members leave behind, especially blood and dead corpses. Anything sucked up into her vacuum cleaner cannot be retrieved, except for the last material that was sucked in.
Phinx
- Nen Type - Reinforcement (Kyouka)
- Age - 33
- Weight - 85 kg
- Height - 185 cm
According to some other hunter sources, the large dome shaped hat and yellow costume that Sphinx normally dons is a ceremonial costume from his native country, which seems rather gaudy. Thankfully, he changes into a simpler dressing style without the cumbersome accessories whenever he prepares for battle--and is a genius when it comes to unarmed combat. Phinx uses his hands in battle, which have been shown to be extremely powerful.
Nen Ability - Ripper Cyclotron: Phinx's nen type is Reinforcement, so you can bet that he must be pretty powerful. His ability involves how many times he winds his arm. The more winds that he does with the arm, the stronger his blow will become.
Pakunoda
- Nen Type - Specialization (Tokushitsu)
- Age - 28
- Weight - 52 kg
- Height - 182 cm
- Blood Type - O
A sophisticated woman with revealing attire, Pakunoda exudes an air of self-confidence that can be intimidating to others. Pakunoda is fully loyal to Kuroro, and may even go against the Phantom Troupe in order to help him.
Nen Ability - Memory Bomb: For those who know of her nen ability, their fears are well-founded, as Pakunoda is able to read the thoughts of any person or any object she has had contact with. Be it a brief touch or an engaged conversation, Pakunoda is able to draw out secrets kept hidden within the premordial regions of the brain. Attempting to create false memories is impossible, since Pakunoda can only extract the most pure memories. Without a doubt, the private information she has garnered is highly useful in exposing weaknesses and secrets, especially in finding out the opponent's nen ability or in situations requiring some form of extortion or blackmail.
Pakunoda's hidden ability is to shoot her memories into her opponent, using a revolver and special Nen Bullets.
Ubogin
- Nen Type - Reinforcement (Kyouka)
- Age - 29
- Weight - 127 kg
- Height - 258 cm
- Blood Type - B
Ubogin is the eleventh member of the Phantom Troupe. Nobunaga has compared his personality to Gon's, seeing how not only do they have the same Nen type, but their behavior is similar as well. However, like all of the Phantom Troupe, Ubogin doesn't hesitate to kill anyone. Out of all of the Phantom Troupe, Ubogin is the strongest in terms of physical power.
Nen Ability: Ubogin has seasoned his nen to the point where he has 100% power in the Reinforcement type Nen. He can strengthen his muscles to the point where neither bullets nor missiles will have much of an effect on him, and can strengthen even his vocal cords in order to kill someone internally. His favorite ability is his "Big Bang Impact", which is nearly as powerful as a missile.
Zoldyck family
Killua' family comprises of 10 living members, including Mahha and wife (no appearance in story), Zeno, Silva and wife, and 5 sons Illumi, Milluki (Miruki), Alluka (has yet to appear), Killua and Kaluto. Their reputation for performing the kill for the highest bidder has made them notoriously well-known in the Hunter universe.
The 'humble' abode of the Zoldyck family is none other than Kukulu Mountain- and is so well known that its entry point has become a tourist attraction for curious travellers. To gain entry into the compounds, however, is almost impossible- as the area is loaded with deadly booby traps, ferocious beasts (Silva's pets) and well-trained and deadly servants of the family.
Silva
With an appearance befitting a rock band member than an accomplished assassin, Silva is Kihlua's father. A silent, pensive figure, Killua's interaction with him seems not to be much. Certainly the member who deals the most powerful blows to his enemies.
Zeno
Zeno is Killua's grandfather. A wily old man, his advancing age has not dampened his quick thinking and speed in battle. Appearing somewhat eccentric, he wears a sign that says, "A kill a day". Spooky. Zeno has quite high expectations of Killua, observing that out of all the descendents of the assassin family, Killua is the most outstanding student of assassin skills.
Illumi
Killua's eldest brother. He is an experienced assassin and had camouflaged his appearance wuth another identity during the Hunter Exam which Killua also undertook. An oppressive evil aura about him makes even Killua fearful and wary whenever he approaches Illumi.
It's hard not to imagine why Illumi elicits such a feeling from his younger brother- his face is a mask, expressionless- no-one can fathom the thoughts or feelings of Illumi. His eyes are black pools of nothingless, like a black hole which sucks everything in, emitting no light of its own. Coupled with his lightning-quick and bulls-eye control of his signature pins, that can kill victims even without them noticing, and you have a really scary figure.
A certain amount of friendship is shared between Hisoka and Illumi, although it's unclear as to how it could have developed (too many similarities that they share?). Illumi once ame to the aid of Hisoka by standing for him as a double (using his excellent feature-shifting skills) in the Ryodan compounds whilst Hisoka was away performing a certain deed.
Milluki
Killua's 2nd eldest brother, an obese figure speaks of his strong adversion of performing any physical activity requiring seious exertion. He has a fetish for collecting girl figurines and computer games. Seems to be talented in hacking computer systems, and was one of the injured during Kihlua's escape. Milluki's also primarily in charge of torturing Killua with whips and electrocution. After being tipped off the whereabouts of Greed Island, Milluki's excitement resulted in one of the rarer moments in which he made an outside expedition in search of the game.
Kikyou
A cyborg figure? Hmm... Kikyou is Killua's mother, who got injured while preventing him from running away from home. She certainly doesn't look like a maternal figure, as she is an assassin too. Seems to be slightly paranoid and is cautious of Killua's friends--Gon, Kurapica and Leorio, and is eagerly awaiting for Killua to excel in the art of assassinations -to continue on with the family business, no doubt.-
Kaluto
A mysterious looking younger brother of Killua, he is always seen following his mother Kikyou around. He appears to be the quickest and most nimble of all the members. His 2 most recent appearances was in the assassination of the 10 Mafia leaders where he appeared alongside with Irumi, and as a source of distraction for the Ryodan members in book 13.
Hunters
Satotz
With a face that appears to pop right out from Poker card illustrations, one wonders how to treat Satotz seriously. Another rising question is his ability to speak, judging from his apparent lack of any oratorical organ on his face. (i.e-- he's missing a mouth!!)
Satotz was the first of the appointed judges that greeted the candidates, and the test of the first stage was the test of the candidate's stamina. While he merrily lead them on a physically exhausting marathon, leading the pack with huge easy strides, the runners panted and were very tired. As a Hunter archaeologist in his normal profession, he was also inspired by Ging in taking up the Hunter license. One who initially felt a strong civic duty to carry out his role as a judge, he had progressively taken a liking to Gon and wished to help him. Quite a compassionate person, actually.
Fuhara
Menchi's companion in the second exam, a hulking figure with a large potbelly and an even larger appetite. Fuhara's easy-going nature contrasts with Menchi's highly selective one.
Fuhara was the judge in the first round of stage 2- and his condition for passing the round was for the candidates to hunt down the wild boar that is in the nearby forest, bringing the carcass for him roasted. It was an easy task (and interesting too- as you get to see the various methods Gon, Leorio and Killua used to get the animal) and almost all the candidates managed to bring one back for Fuhara to savour- which he did with great relish; gobbling them down and leaving a large heap of bones beside him.
Menchi
Picky, picky, picky is what I'll call her- but it fits her profession very well, being the Epicurian hunter she is, and one of the world's best at that. Coupled with Menchi's sensitive and highly selective sense of taste and culinary skills is a physically fit body that enables her to carry out the search of unique foods and culinary experiences- in dangerous places.
Menchi was one of the 2 judges that presided over the second stage of the Exam. Her exam topic was to prepare a piece of sushi for her to taste. If it meets up to her expectations (which is very very stringent) the candidate would have passed the stage.
(Eveyone was also very baffled as to what sushi was- as they didn't know what cuisine it is, so it was very funny seeing Killua, Kurapica and Gon give their versions of sushi to eat, only to get rejected by Menchi)
Liba
The judge of the 3rd stage- with a pair of red sunshades and punky hairdo. Looks to be a slightly perverse character, with a sly look with eyes that are almost identical to the foxes in the preliminary stages. He concocts up many devious ideas- in the Tower of tricks, the hurricane storm and the number tag stages- that test the candidates in different aspects of group dynamics- both in a communal and individual front.
Netero
This old man is none other than the head of the Hunter committee- which presides over the awarding of hunter licenses to suitable candidates that passed the test. Netero made a rather stunning entry in his first appearance-making a free-fall jump from the hunter blimp (flying at a very high altitude) without a parachute, landing squaring on his feet, without any sign of damage. His legs must have been created with steel!
A highly eccentric old man with many unconventional ideas, (Netero's idea of the final stage of the exam is surely unconventional enough!) even Hisoka seems to be wary of this figure. I wonder what would happen if he ever got to engage with a one-on-one battle with Zeno (Killua's grandfather)- another wizened but powerful fella.
Netero’s Secretary
Looks to be a talking potato-head, though one thing we can be sure of is that his brain's certainly stuffed with things other than starch. Highly factual and exacting in his words- the secretary was the one who gave a presentation on the uses of the Hunter license to the successful candidates of the Exam. He can really become a very successful spokesman of Calbee Potato Chips.
Melody (Senritsu)
Senritsu is a emission type Nen user. She makes her soothing aura flow out to people when she plays an instrument. This special aura can heal people's tiredness, illnesses (if it's not a serious one) and it can calm down people. She also has a very sharp sense of hearing and can tell a person's mood just by listening to that person's heart beat. For example, she knows when people are lying or when someone has completely lost his/her temper.
Senritsu is a Music Hunter who is very kind and understanding and has won my respect for her. You may ask "Can imaginary characters win anyone's repect? She's ugly too!" Appearance isn't everything you know. I think she has a very kind looking face. The Japanese Seiyuu who acts as her is the same person who acts as Chibi Maruko. She makes her voice sound very calm, gentle and round, which is perfect for the part of Senritsu. Senritsu is always ready to listen to anyone's confesssions and has the gift to make people open up to her, which has made me like her a lot. She is one of the very few characters who has made Kurapika open up to her and Leorio realizes that.

Hunter exam candidates
Besides the main characters of the series, there were an additional 400 people who had taken the Exam with the same dream of obtaining the Hunter license. Although some have met rather untimely ends during the course of the exam, they were nonetheless very colourful and unforgettable characters that spiced up the storyline. Here are some of the more prominent characters listed below in numerical order of the Hunter number tag.
Tonpa (No. 16 )
Outcome: Disqualified at stage 4.
Nicknamed the 'newbie killer' by other candidates with more experience taking the exam, Tonpa has taken the exam for 25 consecutive terms, but has somehow never managed to pass. He often brags of his experience to newbies and then offers a helping hand. Of course, this is merely subterfuge as he takes a perverse pleasure in sabotaging their attempts to get the license.
This time around, he trailed Gon, Killua, Kurapica, and Leorio while attempting various means to foil their advancement. In order to do this, he used methods like spiking drinks with a strong laxative, feigning fatigue to delay the group's progress, and other nasty tactics. To his chagrin, these had no measurable effect on their progress.
Pokkuru (No. 53)
Outcome: Successfully got Hunter license.
This has been the second attempt for Pokkuru to pass the Exam. He's an accomplished archer that carries a bow and shaft of arrows wherever he goes. The arrows are tipped with a potent tranquiliser that even with a small nick, induces paralysis for any person for up to a week. Pokkuru's aim in life is to become a successful wildlife hunter through obtaining the license.
During the discussion that took place after the end of the Exam, Pokɪkuru had lingering doubts over the way Kurapica had passed the last stage. In fact, he was always wary of Kurapica as he excelled on all aspects of character.
Anita (No. 111)
Outcome: Disqualified at stage 2
Note: Anita is a character that appears only in the anime version of Hunter x Hunter, and does not exist in the original manga version.
As a result of tracking down the assassins who had killed her father, Anita sneaked up onto the Hunter blimp as an illegal stowaway. Her main target-- to attack Killua, as his family was responsible for the murder. Yet, she ultimately realised her mistake as she found out that the much beloved father she knew was actually a prominent drug-trafficker in the black market, who had made many enemies. The assassins were merely doing their job and should not be held responsible for his death. Having this revelation, Anita parted amicably from the Exam.
Suoer (No. 118)
Outcome: Disqualified at stage 4.
With a trained monkey that follows him wherever he goes, Suoer teamed up with Tonba to steal Leorio's number tag at stage 4 of the exam. However, the tables were turned on the duo when Kurapica intervened and foiled their plot, resulting for the pair to get kicked out of the exam. Even his monkey did the final act of 'betrayal' by sidling up to Kurapica, revealing the hidden location of Leorio's hidden tag.
Bodoro (No. 191)
Outcome: Killed at final stage.
A strict, stubborn old man, Bodoro wishes only to fight against adults, not little kids as what he deemed Gon and Kihlua to be, when interviewed with Netero. Managing to reach the final stage, he was unluckily at the receiving end of Kihlua's sudden outburst of violence, and was killed as a result.
The Mori Brothers (No. 197, 198, 199)
Outcome: Disqualified at stage 4.
Being more of pen-knife weilding junkies than real fighters, much of their success in the Hunter exam is due to the close-knit cooperation between them. Always appearing in a trio, the brothers share a close bond between each other. During stage 4, Kihlua managed to get hold of the youngest brother, who was stalking him at that time. To save his life, the 2 older brothers willingly gave up their hunter tags.
Ponzu (No. 289)
Outcome: Disqualified at stage 4.
Being the only prominent female who managed to enter the last few stages of the exam, Ponzu's secret weapon lies in the pink round hat she wears. For living beneath it are a pack of stinging hornets that emerge and attack people that threaten her. Although being a minor character in the series, her cute and girlish charm has won her some fans who voted for her in an early Hunter poll.
Hanzo (No. 294)
Outcome: Successfully got Hunter license.
Breaking the stereotyped figure of a silent ninja, Hanzo has a very talkative and somewhat charismatic personality. Having undergone a vigorous and strict physical training since young, his body is both supple and strong, with a fighting ability that far surpasses Gon, as seen in the final match between the two. Supplementing this is a handful of -underhand- tactics which he can resort to when the situation requires of him, as a ninja is well versed in the art of torture and camouflage. During the match with Gon, he tried to force Gon into submission by fracturing his arm, but to no effect, due to Gon's strong will. In the hurricane alert in Stage 3 of the exam, Hanzo was appointed leader fo the escape mission, and acted to supervise the tasks for other candidates to perform.
Datakuru (No. 301)
Outcome: Successfully got Hunter license.
An eerie pinheaded freak that keeps silent most of the time save for the creaking, chattering noises he makes, Datakuru hides a secret identity. For beneath the ugly facade is Killua's older brother, Illumi, who wishes to obtain the license "for ease of carrying out certain tasks". Well, it sure did fool Killua, who did not notice this until being given a rude shock when Datakuru reverted back to his true form in the match between him and Killua. Throughout the Exam, he was seen to be acting in collaboration with Hisoka, being old friends, no doubt.
Gereda (No. 384)
Outcome: Killed at stage 4.
A man with some African (?) origins, Gereda is adept in hunting down animals, and is a frequent candidate for the Exam. His weapon is a blowpipe with darts laced with a neurological poison that immobilises victims. He can track down his victim and lie undetected in the shadows, until opportunity strikes before he makes the deadly move. Gon was the unfortunate victim in stage 4, and had his number tag taken from him. Even more unfortunate was the eventual fate of Gereda, who was killed by the hands of Hisoka, being Hisoka's target.
Other characters
Mito Freecss
Birthday: 7th September Blood Type: A Height: 162cm Weight: 50kg
In the manga Mito didn't want Gon to become a Hunter because Ging only came back home once after he took the Hunter's exam. She didn't want Gon to leave his family like Ging did. However in the HxH novel, Gon's mother was Mito's sister and Ging was her brother in law. Mito was angry with Ging because he left her sister all alone at home and she had to watch her sister look sadly out of the window in hope of her husband returning. Her sister gave birth to Gon and died soon afterwards without seeing her husband ever again. Mito didn't want Gon to become a Hunter who didn't care about his family like his father. Togashi Sensei spells Mito's name "Mitoo" in English.
Ging Freecss
Nearly nothing is known about him except that he is a double Hunter (A Hunter must make great achievements in two areas of Hunts. eg: Black list Hunting and Treasure Hunting) He's also very rich and as powerful as a president of a country. Netero, the head of the Hunter's Committee, said to Biske that Ging is one of the Five Nen Users, which means that Ging is one of the top 5 Nen users of the world.
Neon Nostrard
- Nen Type - Specialization (tokushitsu)
Neon is the daughter of Kurapika's boss, Right Nostrard. Neon once had 9 personal bodyguards, Kurapika being one of them, but only 4 of them are alive now. Kurapika is the present leader of her bodyguards because his predecessor was killed by the Geneiryodan.
Nen ability: Lovely Ghost Writer Neon's Nen ability is the power to fortell people's future, but she can't fortell her own future. To do this, she must have a person's name (a nickname will do) the date of birth, (the year as well) and the person's Blood Type written down on paper. If the person isn't present while she is using her Lovely Ghost Writer, a photo of the person's face is needed too. Neon doesn't know what she writes because the ghost that appears on her arm does it automatically for her. All she has to do it to pick up a pen or a pencil and just let her arm write for her.
The person's future is foretold by 4 lined verses. Each verse represents a week of the month (so it's best to have your future foretold by Neon at the beginning of the month.) If there is something bad in store in the future, the poem tells you how to avoid it. If you do as the poem says, it is possible to avoid these nasty "events".
