Holy shit

Check out the 1972 (lower left) configuration in Image:I-95_RI_exit_27.jpg, specifically the one-way roads. The bridge carrying US 1 over I-95 was one-way south. 1962 (upper right) had a short one-way pair as well. --SPUI (talk) 22:35, 3 Mar 2005 (UTC)

Yo

I'm making maps for the routes - I've made Image:RI 1A map.png so far. I'd like to be sure everything in the base map (Image:RI State Highways base.png) is fine before continuing. Two things I can think of:

Does 179 end at 81 or the state line?
What do various sources say about 114 in Cumberland? Other than that one wicked old reassurance, it appears most if not all signs putting it on the northern route say TO 114, while the 123 route has the signs at the split from 123.

Signage also shows 114 with 123 though, and most of the signage putting 114 on Blackstone says TO 114. It could be argued in the same way that 138 southbound stays with 24 until exit 2. Signage going both ways on 114 specificially show 114 turning onto Blackstone. Southbound on Diamond Hill, there's a large green sign that points 114 to the right onto Blackstone. Going Northbound on Broad, there is a 114 trailblazer that points it to the right onto Blackstone.

I seem to remember at least one of those signs saying TO 114. I'll keep it there though. Green is locally maintained and red is state maintained {I explain that in the caption on RI 1A). Dual Disc FA objections

I don't want to seem too negative, but I don't think you could put anything in the article that would overcome my main objection, which is that the article can't be both comprehensive and stable, as required by FAC guidelines. The situation, for lack of a better word, is developing fairly rapidly -- I saw, for example, a "recent developments" article in the new ICE magazine this week. To oversimplify an analogy, I wouldn't support any FAC for an article on "The 2005 baseball season," no matter how good it was, until the season was over. FWIW, I also think the SACD discussion is out-of-date, given Sony's pullback, and there's a reference to a November 2005 article that I assume is misdated. Monicasdude 17:17, 18 August 2005 (UTC)

Seasonal Affective Disorder

Anchorage is the only big city in the United States that is north of 50 degrees latitude. The SAD article singles out 50 degrees as the point above which SAD is a big problem. Nope. Princeton Pike is an old turnpike, while US 206 is an even older pre-turnpike road. The turnpike fell into disrepair, so the Lincoln Highway was routed over present US 206. Oh, the Sam Korn Thing

I know he's "one of them", but he's been a nice guy to me, and i'd like to ask you to remove all or some of them. I think that's the thread that's caused all of the problems here "they" have said "don't do this or else" "we"(although I admit, i've been a "they" at times when I was tired or frustrated)say "screw you" and the cycle of counterproductivity continues.

Hell, you don't have to get rid of all of them, you don't even have to listen me and you can keep them up there, but it'd be a big first step. Whatever happened has already happened, you can't change that. But you can change the present. Hi Analogdemon. I think you're doing good work on the DVD Audio article, Beach Boys POV, and of course roads. Our interests overlap to some extent, which is why I'd be disappointed if you quit Misplaced Pages or got blocked. I don't mind anything on your user page right now, I guess I'm just puzzled about why you are (were) trying to push the envelope with its content. I'm also disappointed at SPUI's departure, but I can't say I'm surprised given his tendency to make personal attacks and to add provocative content to his user page. Rhode Island

Hey, can you do me a favor? Next time you're on I-95 near the Rhode Island/Massachusetts line, can you check for the highest milepost in Rhode Island? This will be the first U.S. Route realigned onto an Interstate in Florida, not counting the two caused by necessity (I-275/US 19 over the Sunshine Skyway and I-4/US 92 (now redone with C/D roads) east of Tampa, where US 92 was upgraded on the spot at US 301). --SPUI (T - C - RFC) 08:17, 8 April 2006 (UTC)

Holy maps! Very sweet. It looks like US 50 had a several hundred mile gap in it originallly between Ely, NV and Provo, UT. Also it looks like US 2 in VT originally went along US 302 and US 5 between Montpelier and St. Johnsbury. --Analogdemon (talk) 11:27, 2 May 2006 (UTC)

Yeah - Illinois Route 4 was the pre-1926 designation for US 66. It's still in use on a section south of Springfield that was bypassed early.

Cool MassHighway maps online

- especially check out the "Numbered Routes with Mile Points" linked from page 13. By the way, 80 apparently has a hanging end now, just like 147. (These maps don't show new US 44 yet though.) A few things I notice from a quick loop at the maps:

Route 9 has been relocated in Pittsfield. (More info here.)
Route 15 (extension of RI 15) exists!

Route 116 begins where it crosses under I-91 at the I-91 bridge over the Connecticut River; there's no access to I-91 there.
Mileposts on A routes continue through "secret multiplexes" with their parents.
Route 127 does in fact begin/end at the first rotary on Route 128 - it no longer ends at itself.
Routes 114 and 129 end at each other - I think we knew this.
Route 1A ends at the US 1/I-95/Route 128 cloverleaf in Dedham.
Route 38 is shown ending at Route 28. Route 99 begins south of Sullivan Square.

And some details from the database:

Route 99 begins at Austin Street/Gilmore Bridge.
Route 147 ends at US 5 in West Springfield.
Route 228 ends where the median begins and George Washington Boulevard accesses the northbound lanes, or maybe slightly further north.
(State) Route 3 becomes US 3 at Mass Ave! (I carefully checked the mileage in both directions; the maps also put a US 3 shield between Mass Ave and the BU Bridge.) So I guess the MDC didn't fuck up on that one sign. But they did fuck up the sign on the Longfellow.
Route 2 begins and ends at the corner of Charles Street and Beacon Street, which is what we basically knew.
The database shows old US 44 as Route 44A!
Many arterials are assigned a "secret" number from N001 to N474. Some numbers are skipped, implying that these numbers may have been around for a while. (N362 - the ramp from I-93 north at exit 37C - is the only one that's not an arterial at all; that could just be an error in the data.)

The Beatles discography detailed US LP discography

Great job so far in compiling a detailed discography of the original American Beatle LPs. The only thing I would suggest is to include the track listings. In the case of American LPs which exactly match the British LPs, simply state 'as British album.' I'll be looking forward to the Magical Mystery Tour (album) listing. Beatles News

Apple Corps v. Apple Computer. A case brought by Apple Corps against Apple Computer, regarding possible infringement of a previous agreement between the two parties in respect of distribution of music, was heard in a London High Court. The story made Misplaced Pages's front page due to a nomination by our own Kingboyk. The story had an amusing second wave in the news and on Misplaced Pages; be sure to read the article on Guy Goma if you missed it!

Project News

The Beatles article has been approved for inclusion in Misplaced Pages Version 0.5, making it one of the first 20 articles to be selected and the first in the Music category.

The Beatles discography has been improved, thanks particularly to the efforts of Analogdemon and Steelbeard1.

The Ringo Starr solo single It Don't Come Easy has been co-adopted by simonthebold.

Eleven new articles have been listed in the Project Log since 1 May.

The hottest Project page this month has been Policy Talk, where some lively discussion has taken place regarding the (perennial) question of the capitalisation of the letter T in "The Beatles". After seeking the comments of Wikipedian third parties unrelated to the project, the proponents and opponents concluded that the current naming policy was correct. The discussion had the added bonus of bringing in some new members.

Kingboyk and Lar have instigated an overhaul of the article classification system involving the project talk page template and the possible use of MathBot.

Member News

New members to the project this month include Analogdemon, HighwayCello, Wootking, Lukobe, Crestville, Vera, Chuck & Dave, JaymzSpyhunter and Brian.D.

Project member (and "co-instigator" of The Beatles Project) Lar was made an Administrator. Project member Kingboyk (the other guilty party) has been awarded a Music Barnstar for his contributions, including his work within The Beatles Project, and has also stewarded the KLF article to Featured Article status this month. Sometimes-contributor ZincOrbie has also been awarded a Barnstar for his work on the Badfinger article. Congratulations to all!

Issue of the Month

The matter of the article History of the Beatles and the History section of the main article The Beatles continues to concern various editors, including DavidWBrooks and Vera, Chuck & Dave. Suggestions, comments, or help with the task would be much appreciated.

Beatles News

Billy Preston, often considered the Fifth Beatle, died on 6 June at age 59. The American soul musician was a long term friend of The Beatles and was the only person to receive joint credit on a Beatles single ("Get Back"). Preston was an Apple Records recording artist and he performed at George Harrison's Concert for Bangladesh and at the Concert for George, both energetic and memorable performances. He also played regularly with The Rolling Stones and a number of other artists.

Apple Corps has combined forces with Cirque du Soleil to create a show called "LOVE", featuring music by The Beatles, to be produced at the Mirage theatre in Las Vegas. The deal is reportedly worth US$30 million. George Harrison had originally been involved, as well as George Martin and Giles Martin. Preview performances began June 2, with the gala opening occurring on June 30.

The Beatles article, the "Flagship" of the Project, is currently under review with regard to its Featured Article status. It is hoped that the review will identify those areas that need some(/lots of) remedial work, and that the Project participants and those editors who are involved in the the FA admin pages to can work together to "save" the status of the article.
- At the moment there is some discussion as to why it has been listed, and what may be needed to help it retain its FA status. It may well be that some work is going to be required in formulating a plan of action, and then some more in achieving those aims.
- The FA status is obviously quite important to the Project, and it would be appreciated if participants are able to provide assistance in keeping the article up to standard. The editors would be grateful if those persons receiving this Newsletter could spare some of their time, energy and brainpower in keeping this jewel in our crown in its proper place. Project News

Unfortunately, the Featured Article badge on The Beatles was revoked. The article was immediately nominated for Good Article status, which it received later that same day. Project member Kingboyk said of the nomination, "I'm quite happy about it really, as I feel that GA is about where we're at and gives some incentive to work on the article."

Eleanor Rigby (edit | talk | history | protect | delete | links | watch | logs | views) failed in its good article nomination, but only on two minor points (see its talk page). If you want a Blue Peter badge, why not fix those issues and resubmit it?

Kingboyk has given {{WPBeatles}} another major overhaul, and has assessed all of the Beatles articles. He would be grateful if other editors would leave comments on the state of articles, needed improvements and so on, by clicking the Comments link in the template. Also, feel free to revise the gradings—the assessments were done quickly, and article quality can change.

No articles have been adopted this past month. Adopt one now!

Beatles News

The Royal Mail has recently announced that commemorative stamps featuring various album covers from The Beatles will be released in January 2007. The covers to be commemorated are With the Beatles, Revolver, Sgt. Peppers Lonely Hearts Club Band, Abbey Road, and Let It Be.

The site of the former Casbah Club, operated by Mona Best (mother of Pete) in the basement of her house, and where the nascent Beatles played and rehearsed, has been accorded Grade II Listed status following a recommendation by British Heritage.

Project News

Some Project articles are having their Featured Article status reviewed, and the comments are not encouraging. The articles are A Day in the Life and A Hard Day's Night (song). (She Loves You has already had its FA status revoked.) Please participate in the discussion and help improve the articles!

Beatlesque has been overhauled by andreasegde.

Brian Epstein has been adopted by Liverpool Scouse.

Five new articles have been listed in the Project Log since 1 September:
- Valotte, a Julian Lennon studio album from 1984 (NaLaochra)
- The Secret Value of Daydreaming, a Julian Lennon studio album from 1986 (NaLaochra)
- Mr Jordan, a Julian Lennon studio album from 1989 (NaLaochra)

In other Project news, the articles The Beatles trivia and John Lennon were nominated for deletion, presumably as vandalism, but the deletions were quickly vetoed.

Member News

New members to the project since the last issue include I Am The Walrus and NaLaochra.

As usual, the self-effacing individuals who contribute to the Project are far too modest to mention any Barnstars or other awards they may have received. Obviously they feel their editing/contributing is reward enough.

Issue of the Month

The lead article of the Project recently lost its FA status, and now some of the other articles are being reviewed. Citations and references within articles are again the major concern. Contributors who have literature (books, magazines, links, etc.) are especially needed to provide the necessary citations. It is not enough for editors to know the facts; they need to be backed up by other sources. All help, both within the articles and the discussion, would be appreciated.

Issue of the Month

Again, the issue of the month is inline citations. A Day in the Life, A Hard Day's Night (song), and Get Back have all been defeatured, as they failed to satisfy criterion 1(c) of What is a featured article?, and other song FAs are due for the chopping block. Inline citations are an important aspect of articles—they ensure verifiability and reliability, and they remove original research. Additionally, they give readers the option to read the original source material and view it within context.

Basically:

All direct quotations attributed to Beatles members pooled from interviews need full inline citations.
All critical comments about songs or albums need full inline citations to notable music critics, magazines opinions, or reviews, as opposed to being merely comments by Wikipedians.
Inline citations need: author name, article name, publication date, and name of publication. Such info is still preferable even if quoting from an interview posted upon a website; when this is the case, place the URL link at the end of the citation with the date it was last accessed. (This will help editors retrieve the page using the Wayback Machine, should the link go dead in the future.)

Beatles News

The Beatles are due to release a soundtrack album, LOVE, at the end of November, as a companion to their Cirque du Soleil adaptation of the same name. It will feature remastered and remixed versions of their previously released songs, including some new medleys.
Paul's getting a divorce. Pain, arguing, and fighting abound.

Project News

Featured Article drive: A number of project members are collaborating on Paul McCartney's article, with the aim of getting it to Featured Article status. The work is going well and all help is welcome! Check in at Talk:Paul McCartney if you want to help.

The Wings tours are really nicely documented now (see Category:Wings tours), but Category:The Beatles tours is almost empty. Kingboyk and the rest of us would love to see (and read) articles on each Beatles tour, including the pre-fame tours of the UK—and the Hamburg trips, of course!

The article on Alistair Taylor has been adopted by Alexcalamaro.

Two new articles have been listed in the Project Log since 1 October:
- "I'll Be on My Way", a Lennon/McCartney song from 1963 (Zakko)
- Wings tours, a list of Wings concert tours (Kingboyk)

The hottest Project page this month has been Paul McCartney, involved in the Featured Article drive, as mentioned above.

Our project members are too modest to report any awards they may have given or received.

Wherever possible, editors should help to trim down on list-like prose within Beatles articles. They should convert list-like sections into fluent, cohesive prose which ties an article's sections together. Lists make articles disjointed, awkward, and difficult to read.

Be sure to take part in the Featured Article drive, and don't forget those inline citations!

Issue of the Month

Misplaced Pages's standards are improving all the time, with the result that many articles in The Beatles Wikiproject are being nominated for review of their FA and GA status - and many are losing that accolade. It is difficult, with such a large number of articles and the ease with which editors may make changes which are detrimental, to maintain the standard of articles, let alone improve them. As ever, members efforts are both appreciated and needed to keep the Project on course.

Beatles News

A Beatles compilation called "Love", featuring tracks remastered by George Martin (with his son Giles), has been released and has made number 1 in Canada.

The impending divorce between Paul McCartney and the former Heather Mills continues to make the pages in the tabloid press in the UK.

Project News

New to the Project Log is the nomination of four articles for consideration as suitable for collaboration, in the manner in which Paul McCartney is now being edited, once the aforementioned article is completed. The nominations are George Harrison, Apple Corp, The Beatles(!!), all proposed by Kingboyk and John Lennon, proposed by LuciferMorgan. Interested editors should make themselves known on the various article talk pages.

Three new articles have been listed in the Project Log since 1 November, being Wings tours by Kingboyk, and List of Beatles concerts and Mathew Street, both by Liverpool Scouse.

The hottest Project page this month has been Paul McCartney (see above and below).

Another Project article, I Want to Hold Your Hand, has lost its FA status and both Sgt Peppers Lonely Hearts Club Band and Beatles For Sale have lost their GA (Good Article) status. In the meantime, Real Love is being considered at WP:FARC. Some great news is that Paul McCartney has passed its nomination for GA status, although with the polite request that the introduction be looked at.

Member News

New members to the project since the last issue include mrmaroon25, K yo cat and "I Am the Eggman".

From the Editors

If one is to be mercenary about the subject, it should be noted that Paul McCartney is going to be more noteworthy than usual in the near future as his divorce case comes to court. In that case it is great to note that a small group of Project Members (plus another individual who does not feel compelled to register himself despite important contributions) have worked very hard, and in an atmosphere of good humour, to take the McCartney piece to a succesful Good Article nomination. Perhaps this is the method to use for future articles, a small dedicated team concentrating on one subject at a time. Of course, all members are invited to join any existing group or even go about forming their own. Please note any such action in the Project Log.

The ongoing divorce proceedings between Paul McCartney and the former Heather Mills continues to occupy the attention of the media - Heather Mills reportedly receiving unspecified death threats.

The British Post Office have released a series of stamps depicting various Beatles album covers.

Project News

The Paul McCartney article is being primped and primed for submission as a Featured Article candidate.

The good folk who have been working on the above article have turned their attention to the John Lennon page. Everyone is, of course, invited to contribute.

1 new article (by keithmall) has been listed in the Project Log since 1 December 2006, being The Beatles Book, a monthly magazine.

The hottest Project page this month has been the Macca (Paul for those not in the know!) article, again.

If the Project is to be appear professional then it may have to change the format. Polite discussion is invited at Misplaced Pages talk:WikiProject The Beatles/Policy. If possible, please provide sources/references to support your position.

List of Pennsylvania rivers move

Hi, I see you moved List of Pennsylvania rivers to List of rivers in Pennsylvania. However, you did not move the associated talk page (which is still at Talk: List of Pennsylvania rivers, Talk:List of rivers in Pennsylvania is blank). Nor did you go through and fix all the pages that now link to a redirect (see ]).

For the time being, I am moving the page back to its old name. Would you please mind explaining a) your rationale for the move and b) why you didn't fix all the changes the move made? Well over half of the "List of (state) rivers" pages had already been redirected to "List of rivers in (state)". This was merely for purposes of uniformity. I see nothing wrong with pages linking to redirects, as long as the redirects don't go more than one level deep. --Analogdemon (talk) 17:30, 4 April 2007 (UTC)

Issue 012 – April 2007

Beatles News

On Friday 30th March, a deranged fan was held after attempting to force his way into Paul McCartney's mansion. See here for more details.
Apple Corps continues to make news, after the recent settlement with Apple Computer over the use of the Apple trademark. On April 10th, the company announced that long-time chief executive Neil Aspinall had stepped down and had been replaced by American Jeff Jones. It was also announced that another long term dispute, this time with EMI over royalties, had been amicably settled prior to Aspinall's departure.

Project News

The article "Jeff Jones (music industry executive)" suddenly becomes of top importance in the Apple sphere of Beatledom. User:Kingboyk has created a stub on the man, but the article needs urgent beefing up (including basic biographical data such as date and place of birth) and, if possible, a photograph of the new Apple chief executive.

Mimi Smith promises to have the last word over John yet again; her article is currently a Featured Article Candidate. Brian Epstein is a current GA candidate. See the Status board for more article news.

2 new articles have been listed in the Project Log since 1 March: Tony Barrow and Jeff Jones (music industry executive).

With the debate over "the Beatles" vs "The Beatles" continuing to cause ill feeling and a number of resignations from the project from advocates on both sides, Kingboyk attempted to diffuse the situation by blanking the Project Policy page and tagging it as {{historical}}. Although this unilateral action hasn't been reverted as of the time of writing, the reaction was mixed, with two members rejoining the project and others stating their disagreement. With the issue still not resolved, the page was sent to Miscellany for Deletion, for the wider community (and WikiProject The Beatles members) to consider the issue.

The membership list has been trimmed, with inactive members listed seperately to help gauge the status of the project. If you've been incorrectly listed as inactive, please don't be offended - just move yourself back to the main list.

Chicago's Group Portrait

I noticed you put Group Portrait into the unofficial compilations category. However, it is acknowledged on the band's website (unlike the Take Me Back to Chicago compilation) and they treat it as a part of their official discography (see http://www.chicagotheband.com/discography.htm and scroll down until you reach "Box Sets"). It is irrelevant that the boxed set was produced after they left Columbia Records. They still had a part in the production of the set, including participating in interviews for the set's book. Moreover, after the rights to their Columbia albums were sold back to the band, Chicago Records produced a double jewel case version of the set without the book. In short, the band considers the set to be an official release (albeit not a "numbered" release).

(Posted on Engineer Bob's talk page): Hi, I was just wondering if you could give me your reasoning for reverting to the original image for Image:BS&T3 cover.jpg? The image I uploaded was color-corrected to match the original vinyl cover and also had the Columbia logo in the upper left like the original vinyl release. An important letter

Dear roads editor,

You may have noticed some changes at WP:USRD lately. Some of them, like the cleanup templates and the stub templates, have been astounding and great. Unfortunately, others have been disturbing.

This has become evidenced by the departure of a few prominent editors at USRD, a few RFC's, and much fighting among USRD editors.

After the second RFC, many of us found the opportunity to take a step away from Misplaced Pages for a while--as a self-imposed wikibreak, or possibly on vacation.

The result of such introspection was that many of us were placing ourselves in a "walled garden" and on a self-imposed pedestal of authority over the roads department. Also, we were being hostile to a few users who were not agreeing with us.

In fact, IRC has been the main incarnation of this "walled garden." Decisions have been made there to conduct grudges and prejudices against a few valued USRD users with poor justification.

For this, we have come to apologize. We have come to ask your forgiveness.

In addition to this, we hope to work as one USRD team from now on and to encourage cooperation instead of the promotion of interests.

All users are welcome to collaborate on IRC, the newsletter, or anywhere else at USRD.

In the future, please feel free to approach us about any issues you may have.

The Mfd discussion on your user page

I have closed the discussion to keep to your user page. I was particularly influenced by the people who thought your page was offensive but nevertheless saw no reason to delete. I certainly did not think it was a bad faith nomination. Most of it is not particularly funny or biting satire. Much of it is offensive. I strongly recommend that you calm it down and concentrate on editing wikipedia when here rather than making a point with your user page. If you did not create this file yourself, you will need to specify the owner of the copyright. If you obtained it from a website, then a link to the website from which it was taken, together with a restatement of that website's terms of use of its content, is usually sufficient information. However, if the copyright holder is different from the website's publisher, their copyright should also be acknowledged.

As well as adding the source, we also need to know the terms of the license that the copyright holder has published the file under, usually done by adding a licensing tag. If you created/took the picture, audio, or video then the {{GFDL-self}} tag can be used to release it under the GFDL. If you believe the media meets the criteria at Misplaced Pages:Non-free content, use a tag such as {{non-free fair use in|article name}} or one of the other tags listed at Misplaced Pages:Image copyright tags#Fair use.
