WikiProject Eurovision: Discussion on the use of navigation templates

Hello,

There is currently a discussion ongoing at Misplaced Pages talk:WikiProject Eurovision#Template duplications on the future use of navigation templates (navboxes) within Eurovision articles. The consequences of this discussion could have a large impact on how these templates are organized, named, and used in future, so all project members are invited to participate in the discussion.

You are receiving this message since you are listed as a member of WikiProject Eurovision. If you are no longer interested in contributing to Eurovision articles, please remove your username from this page.

Delivered by MessageDeliveryBot on behalf of WikiProject Eurovision at 15:32, 11 March 2012 (UTC).

I've just noticed that the messagebot never posted the original invitation to engage the Eurovision templates review, therefore I am posting a copy of it manually. It is advisable to engage your concerns and discuss your preferred style on the talk page, before going ahead and wasting time making alterations which is going against a previously agreed consensus. Going about such edit warring activities is very disruptive and may result in a block. WesleyMouse 17:54, 6 April 2012 (UTC)

I have also just noticed that you've been warned in the past about altering templates in a disruptive manner, and you've even been blocked for such activities. Please be cautious as you are now going the same actions again, and I have seen users get an indefinite block before now for breaching the same warning more than once. WesleyMouse 17:57, 6 April 2012 (UTC)
I appreciate that you're helping with fixing the template layouts, but I am in trying myself to get through them all this week, as I was unable to do them over the weekend due to London 2012 Olympics Volunteer training. Now that I'm using AWB to fix these, I keep getting edit conflicts, as you're also making edits to the same templates in unison. Thanks. WesleyMouse 16:15, 16 April 2012 (UTC)
when will you be finished? Frietjes (talk) 16:17, 16 April 2012 (UTC)
As I mentioned I had a busy schedule last weekend; which if it wasn't for that, I'd have been halfway through them all by now. I'm back on training this Saturday 21 April; and hoping to have the templates fixed by then. But I'm not slave-driving myself to get them all done within a day. I feel more comfortable doing them in stages over a period a time; and in the same process I'm going through each of them with a fine tooth-comb in case there were any spelling/tagging mistakes. I hope I'm not sounding picky here, its just personally I like to fix any errors which I created, and use that as a learning exercise. WesleyMouse 16:21, 16 April 2012 (UTC)
as long as we are not editing at the same time, there should be no issue with "edit conflicts". will you be finished editing for the day in 2 hours, 4 hours? Frietjes (talk) 16:23, 16 April 2012 (UTC)
I'm doing them all in stages, not in one constant workload. So I cannot estimate if my editing will be done in 2 hours, 4 hours, etc. It would be just as easy as to leave it with me to get the errors fixed, and you may continue with any other work that needs doing. But believe me, the templates will be fixed in due course. Rome wasn't built in a day, and it is always better to take time in fixing things, rather than rushing to get them done ASAP. WesleyMouse 16:28, 16 April 2012 (UTC)
yes, but Misplaced Pages is a collaborative project. are you saying that you don't want me to edit these templates at all? Frietjes (talk) 16:29, 16 April 2012 (UTC)
I know that Misplaced Pages is a collaborative project, I'm not arguing that. But how is a user to learn from any mistakes, if they are not allowed to correct them in the first place? Are you now denying me of learning from my own mistakes, by not allowing me to fix the templates alone? WesleyMouse 16:34, 16 April 2012 (UTC)
we are both allowed to edit these templates, since neither of us owns them. in the spirit of collaboration, I am willing to not edit them for a reasonable period of time to avoid edit conflicts. since edit conflicts happen when two people are actively editing a page, I asked when you planned to be finished editing for the day, so we can avoid edit conflicts. if you plan to finish in the next 4 to 6 hours, I can wait that long. If you plan to be finished in the next 8 to 12 hours, I can wait that long. however, I don't think I can simply say that I will never edit these templates. Frietjes (talk) 16:40, 16 April 2012 (UTC)

I understand where you're coming from there - but I don't know if you're understanding where I'm coming from in respect to allowing a user to rectify their errors, by going back and correcting them. We are, after all, a collaboration team of editors; some know more than others. But we should also be seen as encouraging towards less-confident users, by nudging them in the right direction to become a reasonable member of Misplaced Pages - even if that means stepping back and giving them the benefit of the doubt to fix any mistakes that s/he has made. Would you like me to post your concerns over at the project page? WesleyMouse 16:46, 16 April 2012 (UTC)

my concern is that you are telling me that I am never allowed to edit these templates. if that is true, we have a problem that needs to be addressed. if you are simply asking for more time, then I can give you more time, but I am asking for an estimate for when I am allowed to edit these templates again. I am perfectly happy to let you fix the problems, or to let Plastikspork fix the problems (request from over a week ago). Frietjes (talk) 16:51, 16 April 2012 (UTC)
I've just remember that Plastikspork (talk · contribs) said I had to notify him when all the templates had been rolled-out so that he can run some BOT thing on them all (whoops). I best let him know, in case there was a specific reason he wanted to run this bot, before continuing with any error fixing. WesleyMouse 16:52, 16 April 2012 (UTC)
Please don't assume that I am telling you not to touch the templates. That is not true. All I have asked is that a user should be expected to correct their own mistakes, without the assistance/interference of other editors. How else are we expected to encourage a high standard of editing, if we are going to prevent a user to correct mistakes? I'm a firm believer in teaching people the correct ways of doing things, even if it means making them go back and correct previously made mistakes. Isn't that a reasonable request for any editor to make? Are we in an authoritarian state, that we shouldn't be encouraging users to work more effectively, by correcting their errors? WesleyMouse 16:57, 16 April 2012 (UTC)
I'm starting to feel a little bit run-down and getting the start of a cold. Not a good sign. If you need to refer to a full list of the new templates, then please click here. Remember the link I have attached belongs to my user space, so avoid altering it if possible. For now, I am going to dope myself up with anti-flu medication and take a hot bath. Bob Peterson

Please do not continue to revert Bob Peterson. The article is legitimized as is, and you should not be reverting good articles. If you can find any reason on why this needs to be reverted, you need to say why. There is nothing wrong with the current content that requires you to remove it for a lesser article. 174.231.68.244 (talk) 00:42, 7 April 2012 (UTC)

{{Catalogs}} OCD Wikiscript Edits

Nice editing of {{Catalogs}}! It's transparent to the average user, but to the average editor...it's much easier to read and intuitively follow the template script when the run-on lines are separated. It made it a lot easier to expand. Thanks! -- Tom.Reding t

My frustrations

Please email me as soon as possible. I don't understand why you insist on making it difficult to make legitimate edits about Ohio politicians. As someone from Ohio who works in politics, you will see that all edits have been legitimate. I have no idea what the hell you have against me, but obviously, my edits have made many articles better. — Preceding unsigned comment added by RDDFF (talkcontribs) 05:14, 7 April 2012 (UTC)

Template:Bakersfield Radio

I was just wondering if you could help me understand the rationale for the reformatting edits you did to the template above? I can see that they don't change how the template renders, but the format behind the scenes is now inconsistent with pretty much every other radio market navbox. Thanks! Mlaffs (talk) 03:05, 2 May 2012 (UTC)

there has been an effort to convert templates from hardcoded bullets to WP:HLIST, which allows the bullets to be set by MediaWiki:Common.css. this effort has been on going for over a year now, and it is preferred since the WP:HLIST format uses html list markup, which is better for wp:accessibility, since these are lists. I can try to elaborate more if you want. As far as I can tell there are hundreds which have already been converted. if you could point me to the inconsistency, I would be happy to work on it, since I have scripts to perform the conversions. as far as I can tell, Category:California Arbitron market navigational boxes is consistent, as is Arizona and Nevada. almost all the television market templates have already been converted as well. thank you. Frietjes (talk) 00:06, 3 May 2012 (UTC)
Thanks for the explanation - I actually saw someone else make a similar set of edits to another navbox today and followed the link they included in their edit summary too. Makes perfect sense. I'd be willing to bet that the navboxes in almost all of the Arbitron market navboxes by state series' need to be converted. I'm actually doing some cleanup work on those right now, so I'll convert any that I came across needing it but if you have scripts, you'll probably get to them before I do. Templates not autocollapsing

I have created

{{Marc Chagall}}
{{Roy Lichtenstein}}
{{Piet Mondrian}}
{{Norman Rockwell}}
{{Winslow Homer}}
{{Marc Chagall}}
{{Edvard Munch}}
{{Marcel Duchamp}}
{{Pierre-Auguste Renoir}}
{{Diego Velázquez}}
{{Frank Gehry}}

They are not autocollapsing.--TonyTheTiger (T/C/BIO/WP:CHICAGO/WP:FOUR) 02:58, 30 May 2012 (UTC)

It was a typo autocollapsed vs autocollapse
yes, the way it works internally is autocollapse = autocollapse, collapsed = collapsed, but anything else = expanded. so, you could type uncollapsed for expanded, or frenchfries for expanded. Frietjes (talk) 15:01, 13 June 2012 (UTC)

Template:Fb rbr position fl

Hello. Think the above still needs a bit of work. At 2009–10 Birmingham City F.C. season#Results by round, there are trailing blank cells at the end of the 38-game season. And at 2011–12 Birmingham City F.C. season#Results by round and elsewhere, it seems to colour 3rd place as a promotion position (it isn't) and 18th place as a relegation position (22nd to 24th go down). cheers, Struway2 (talk) 08:26, 9 June 2012 (UTC)

I fixed the trailing cells. the numerical cut-off for promotion/relegation is set by the |p= and |r=. it was even worse before, since there was no way to change the value, and there were hundreds which were incorrect. I don't think I made it any worse, but I may not have fixed all of them. thank you. Frietjes (talk) 16:13, 9 June 2012 (UTC)
Thanks for noticing and fixing the typo in 2009–10 Birmingham City F.C. season. These three should have been p=2, r=22, rather than 3 and 18 as you had them. I've fixed them. cheers, Struway2 (talk) 07:32, 10 June 2012 (UTC)

Splitting the Philippine Cinema template

I reverted your edit on splitting the template for not consulting other contributors about their opinions on the split. With just one template, which provides several links about Philippine cinema, you just need to add that one template to an article instead of multiple templates if it is divided. So, instead of seeing just one template below an article, now you have to see multiple templates below the article relating to Philippine cinema. Personally, I don't see a reason for splitting the template, maybe it just need some tweaking. Please initiate a talk, start a vote, or ask for opinions as there should be a consensus first per WP:Consensus. Thanks. Briarfallen (talk) 01:24, 14 June 2012 (UTC)

I see no problem. As long they are intact, giving more choices or links available for somebody interested about Filipino cinema from just one Navbox. Thanks.Briarfallen (talk) 16:45, 14 June 2012 (UTC)

Also see this as welll.--TonyTheTiger (T/C/BIO/WP:CHICAGO/WP:FOUR) 22:22, 10 July 2012 (UTC)
in the first example, it added {{{state|}}}, not {{state|}}. this is the expected behaviour. alternatively, it could have added {{{state|autocollapse}}}, since the default is autocollapse. the reason why I usually have it add {{{state|autocollapse}}} is to make it clear how to change the default behaviour, and to make it clear that this is the collapsed state, and not the name of some geographic location. I have see "state = Illinois" before. in the second example, it preserved the already specified default state of open by changing state = open to state = {{{state|open}}}. the following edit, here, was an editor objecting to allowing one to change the collapsible state of the template (see below). Frietjes (talk) 15:18, 11 July 2012 (UTC)

Collapsible option

Hello,

Tony has pointed me to you as the person behind the bypassing of the navbox's function of collapsing if more than one collapsible template is on a page.

Could you please point to the consensus where it was decided that this should be an article level paramater? Otherwise, can you please stop and undo your changes until such a consensus is reached?

Thanks,

- J Greb (talk) 22:40, 10 July 2012 (UTC)

I am not "the person behind the bypassing of the navbox's function of collapsing if more than one collapsible template is on a page". if you check the edit history of the Torchwood template, this has been the case since the template was created (e.g., this version). I am also not the person who decided that "this should be an article level paramater ". if you check my edit history, I am not the one who is going around adding this en mass to templates. currently, the {{collapsible option}} template has over 15,000 transclusions. you can check what links to that template to see how the option was added. there are just as many templates which have this option, but using a different method, like {{Kansas}}. if you have a problem with one of my edits, then please let me know which edit. I did create a script for Tony to facilitate adding the {{collapsible option}} to groups of templates, but I am not the one who decided this was a good idea. however, I have seen some cases where it is a good idea (e.g., U.S. state). for example, if you have many templates wrapped inside of a {{navboxes}} and you would like one of them to be uncollapsed (e.g., see Washington, D.C.). or if you have a very long template, and you would like to have it collapsed by default in very short articles. if you would like to debate the merits of {{collapsible option}}, then I would suggest taking it to either template talk:collapsible option or template talk:navbox. thank you. Frietjes (talk) 15:28, 11 July 2012 (UTC)
There is a difference between having the navigation box it self set to collapse or not and moving that decision to the article level.
But maybe it is a moot point since since collapsible option appears to be an old by pass. Or maybe it is something that should be discussed on a template-by-template basis.

WikiProject Infoboxes

Hi. There is a try to revive WikiProject Infoboxes by doing some tasks. One of these is to support transclude {{Infobox}} and reduce HTML code and wikitables in infoboxe's wikicode. Can you help on that? You are invited to participate in Misplaced Pages:WikiProject Infoboxes with ideas, suggestions and ofcourse your edits :) -- Magioladitis (talk) 12:59, 16 July 2012 (UTC)

Template:Cowsay

Hi. When nominating a template for deletion as you did in this edit, you really ought to notify the template's creator (and any other major contributors). I had no idea this template was listed at TFD. Common courtesy and all that. I don't really care about the template (I'd forgotten about it, actually), but it would've been nice to be able to weigh in at the discussion. Oh well. --MZMcBride (talk) 03:31, 19 July 2012 (UTC)

Template:Infobox aircraft program

Could you please help to transform Template:Infobox aircraft program to use {{Infobox}}? -- Magioladitis (talk) 13:03, 19 July 2012 (UTC)

that will be a bit difficult, but I will see what can be done. they are using a strange format where the infobox only generates rows, and now top or bottom. it may be possible with the "child" option, but it's not clear. Frietjes (talk) 15:05, 20 July 2012 (UTC)
I think we can also change the format. It should be a typical image, caption, parameter name, parameter value infobox. -- Magioladitis (talk) 23:19, 20 July 2012 (UTC)
okay, I updated it. hopefully there are no complaints. I tried to keep the format visually identical to before the update. Frietjes (talk) 19:01, 21 July 2012 (UTC)
Thanks. No worries. I left a note to the WikiProject Infoboxes too. -- Magioladitis (talk) 19:07, 21 July 2012 (UTC)
I could easily do {{infobox aircraft}} as well, to match, if you want. however, I will need an admin to copy the code over to the template when I am done. Frietjes (talk) 19:09, 21 July 2012 (UTC)
Yes, please do it and then I'll copy the code for you. Just leave me anote here. -- Magioladitis (talk) 19:14, 21 July 2012 (UTC)
now in the sandbox, you can check the testcases. Frietjes (talk) 20:25, 21 July 2012 (UTC)

the <noinclude>...</noinclude> for the category was inside the template. while this is not functionally a problem, it does mean that anything else put in that section will appear in the template on the template page (but not in the article since it is inside a <noinclude>...</noinclude>). it looks like this was fix in the subsequent edits. NZ parlbox‎

Hi Frietjes, I don't know enough about it so I'm not 100% but I think the changes you made to the NZ parlbox‎ family of templates has resulted in the templates always being left aligned and not wrapping anymore. See Grant Gillon and Rodney Hide for examples. Are you able to fix this? Mattlore (talk) 20:46, 6 August 2012 (UTC)

yes, sorry about that. I checked several pages, and it looked fine, but I didn't check enough. Frietjes (talk) 20:50, 6 August 2012 (UTC)
Would you mind leaving a short edit summary when making edits? I'm getting a bit worried when I see something marked as 'minor' and when I then open the diff, a whole lot has changed. Schwede66 21:02, 6 August 2012 (UTC)

Colors in navboxes

The colors are there because they relate to the series. Please see Template:90210, Template:24, Template:Desperate Housewives, Template:Awake (TV series), Template:The Simpsons, among others. It is very common for navigational boxes to have eligible colors that relate to the series' theme look. They are not random colors, they are associated with the series. I could understand if they were distracting from the text, but they're not. Articles/templates with a visual appeal actually draw readers in; which is why they are so commonly used. Also, are you familiar with WP:BRD? After you erased the colors, and I reverted, it would have been polite for you to start a discussion. Continuous reverting constitutes edit warring; and after a look at your block log, it appears you had a fairly recent block for edit warring across templates. Nevertheless, I'm open to hearing what you think is so damaging about colors. TRLIJC19 (talkcontribs) 16:32, 11 August 2012 (UTC)

You've been actively editing, so clearly you have seen this message. I will be requesting input from project members if I hear nothing back from you. TRLIJC19 (talkcontribs) 05:10, 13 August 2012 (UTC)
I am assuming you are talking about template:Grey's Anatomy and Template:Private Practice. I don't buy the whole "visual appeal actually draw readers in" argument, since you have provided no citation for a scientific study. I do, however, buy the argument that we should try to keep the look and feel uniform across articles. I am not the only one who has been removing the deviating colour schemes from templates (see a few of the examples in your list). we don't need a bag of skittles at the bottom of each article. the focus should be on content, not rainbow colours and garish icons. Frietjes (talk) 17:11, 13 August 2012 (UTC)
Fair enough; standardization is good. But please, remove it from The Simpsons template if they none of the rest have colors. TRLIJC19 (talkcontribs) 17:55, 13 August 2012 (UTC)

Template:Fb rbr t pos

Hey, there's a situation in the following link: 2012–13 Segunda Liga#Positions by round.
