This page contains a detailed list of the characters from the manga series Hunter × Hunter.

Main characters

Phantom Troupe (also known as the 'Genei Ryodan')

Zoldyck family

Killua' family comprises of 10 living members, including Mahha and wife (no appearance in story), Zeno, Silva and wife, and 5 sons Illumi, Milluki (Miruki), Alluka (has yet to appear), Killua and Kaluto. Their reputation for performing the kill for the highest bidder has made them notoriously well-known in the Hunter universe.

The 'humble' abode of the Zoldyck family is none other than Kukulu Mountain- and is so well known that its entry point has become a tourist attraction for curious travellers. To gain entry into the compounds, however, is almost impossible- as the area is loaded with deadly booby traps, ferocious beasts (Silva's pets) and well-trained and deadly servants of the family.

Silva

With an appearance befitting a rock band member than an accomplished assassin, Silva is Kihlua's father. A silent, pensive figure, Killua's interaction with him seems not to be much. Certainly the member who deals the most powerful blows to his enemies.

Zeno

Zeno is Killua's grandfather. A wily old man, his advancing age has not dampened his quick thinking and speed in battle. Appearing somewhat eccentric, he wears a sign that says, "A kill a day". Spooky. Zeno has quite high expectations of Killua, observing that out of all the descendents of the assassin family, Killua is the most outstanding student of assassin skills.

Illumi

Killua's eldest brother. He is an experienced assassin and had camouflaged his appearance wuth another identity during the Hunter Exam which Killua also undertook. An oppressive evil aura about him makes even Killua fearful and wary whenever he approaches Illumi.

It's hard not to imagine why Illumi elicits such a feeling from his younger brother- his face is a mask, expressionless- no-one can fathom the thoughts or feelings of Illumi. His eyes are black pools of nothingless, like a black hole which sucks everything in, emitting no light of its own. Coupled with his lightning-quick and bulls-eye control of his signature pins, that can kill victims even without them noticing, and you have a really scary figure.

A certain amount of friendship is shared between Hisoka and Illumi, although it's unclear as to how it could have developed (too many similarities that they share?). Illumi once came to the aid of Hisoka by standing for him as a double (using his excellent feature-shifting skills) in the Ryodan compounds whilst Hisoka was away performing a certain deed.

Milluki

Killua's 2nd eldest brother, an obese figure speaks of his strong adversion of performing any physical activity requiring seious exertion. He has a fetish for collecting girl figurines and computer games. Seems to be talented in hacking computer systems, and was one of the injured during Kihlua's escape. Milluki's also primarily in charge of torturing Killua with whips and electrocution. After being tipped off the whereabouts of Greed Island, Milluki's excitement resulted in one of the rarer moments in which he made an outside expedition in search of the game.

Kikyou

A cyborg figure? Hmm... Kikyou is Killua's mother, who got injured while preventing him from running away from home. She certainly doesn't look like a maternal figure, as she is an assassin too. Seems to be slightly paranoid and is cautious of Killua's friends--Gon, Kurapica and Leorio, and is eagerly awaiting for Killua to excel in the art of assassinations -to continue on with the family business, no doubt.-

Kaluto

A mysterious looking younger brother of Killua, he is always seen following his mother Kikyou around. He appears to be the quickest and most nimble of all the members. His 2 most recent appearances was in the assassination of the 10 Mafia leaders where he appeared alongside with Irumi, and as a source of distraction for the Ryodan members in book 13.

Netero’s Secretary

Looks to be a talking potato-head, though one thing we can be sure of is that his brain's certainly stuffed with things other than starch. Highly factual and exacting in his words- the secretary was the one who gave a presentation on the uses of the Hunter license to the successful candidates of the Exam. He can really become a very successful spokesman of Calbee Potato Chips.

Hunter exam candidates

Besides the main characters of the series, there were an additional 400 people who had taken the Exam with the same dream of obtaining the Hunter license. Although some have met rather untimely ends during the course of the exam, they were nonetheless very colourful and unforgettable characters that spiced up the storyline. Here are some of the more prominent characters listed below in numerical order of the Hunter number tag.

Tonpa (No. 16 )

Outcome: Disqualified at stage 4.

Nicknamed the 'newbie killer' by other candidates with more experience taking the exam, Tonpa has taken the exam for 25 consecutive terms, but has somehow never managed to pass. He often brags of his experience to newbies and then offers a helping hand. Of course, this is merely subterfuge as he takes a perverse pleasure in sabotaging their attempts to get the license.

This time around, he trailed Gon, Killua, Kurapica, and Leorio while attempting various means to foil their advancement. In order to do this, he used methods like spiking drinks with a strong laxative, feigning fatigue to delay the group's progress, and other nasty tactics. To his chagrin, these had no measurable effect on their progress.

Anita (No. 111)

Outcome: Disqualified at stage 2

Note: Anita is a character that appears only in the anime version of Hunter x Hunter, and does not exist in the original manga version.

As a result of tracking down the assassins who had killed her father, Anita sneaked up onto the Hunter blimp as an illegal stowaway. Her main target-- to attack Killua, as his family was responsible for the murder. Yet, she ultimately realised her mistake as she found out that the much beloved father she knew was actually a prominent drug-trafficker in the black market, who had made many enemies. The assassins were merely doing their job and should not be held responsible for his death. Having this revelation, Anita parted amicably from the Exam.

Suoer (No. 118)

Outcome: Disqualified at stage 4.

With a trained monkey that follows him wherever he goes, Suoer teamed up with Tonba to steal Leorio's number tag at stage 4 of the exam. However, the tables were turned on the duo when Kurapica intervened and foiled their plot, resulting for the pair to get kicked out of the exam. Even his monkey did the final act of 'betrayal' by sidling up to Kurapica, revealing the hidden location of Leorio's hidden tag.

Bodoro (No. 191)

Outcome: Killed at final stage.

A strict, stubborn old man, Bodoro wishes only to fight against adults, not little kids as what he deemed Gon and Kihlua to be, when interviewed with Netero. Managing to reach the final stage, he was unluckily at the receiving end of Kihlua's sudden outburst of violence, and was killed as a result.

The Mori Brothers (No. 197, 198, 199)

Outcome: Disqualified at stage 4.

Being more of pen-knife weilding junkies than real fighters, much of their success in the Hunter exam is due to the close-knit cooperation between them. Always appearing in a trio, the brothers share a close bond between each other. During stage 4, Kihlua managed to get hold of the youngest brother, who was stalking him at that time. To save his life, the 2 older brothers willingly gave up their hunter tags.

Ponzu (No. 289)

Outcome: Disqualified at stage 4.

Being the only prominent female who managed to enter the last few stages of the exam, Ponzu's secret weapon lies in the pink round hat she wears. For living beneath it are a pack of stinging hornets that emerge and attack people that threaten her. Although being a minor character in the series, her cute and girlish charm has won her some fans who voted for her in an early Hunter poll.

Gereda (No. 384)

Outcome: Killed at stage 4.

A man with some African (?) origins, Gereda is adept in hunting down animals, and is a frequent candidate for the Exam. His weapon is a blowpipe with darts laced with a neurological poison that immobilises victims. He can track down his victim and lie undetected in the shadows, until opportunity strikes before he makes the deadly move. Gon was the unfortunate victim in stage 4, and had his number tag taken from him. Even more unfortunate was the eventual fate of Gereda, who was killed by the hands of Hisoka, being Hisoka's target.

Other characters

Mito Freecss

Birthday: 7th September Blood Type: A Height: 162cm Weight: 50kg

In the manga Mito didn't want Gon to become a Hunter because Ging only came back home once after he took the Hunter's exam. She didn't want Gon to leave his family like Ging did. However in the HxH novel, Gon's mother was Mito's sister and Ging was her brother in law. Mito was angry with Ging because he left her sister all alone at home and she had to watch her sister look sadly out of the window in hope of her husband returning. Her sister gave birth to Gon and died soon afterwards without seeing her husband ever again. Mito didn't want Gon to become a Hunter who didn't care about his family like his father. Togashi Sensei spells Mito's name "Mitoo" in English.

Neon Nostrard

  • Nen Type - Specialization (tokushitsu)

Neon is the daughter of Kurapika's boss, Right Nostrard. Neon once had 9 personal bodyguards, Kurapika being one of them, but only 4 of them are alive now. Kurapika is the present leader of her bodyguards because his predecessor was killed by the Geneiryodan.

Nen ability: Lovely Ghost Writer Neon's Nen ability is the power to fortell people's future, but she can't fortell her own future. To do this, she must have a person's name (a nickname will do) the date of birth, (the year as well) and the person's Blood Type written down on paper. If the person isn't present while she is using her Lovely Ghost Writer, a photo of the person's face is needed too. Neon doesn't know what she writes because the ghost that appears on her arm does it automatically for her. All she has to do it to pick up a pen or a pencil and just let her arm write for her.

The person's future is foretold by 4 lined verses. Each verse represents a week of the month (so it's best to have your future foretold by Neon at the beginning of the month.) If there is something bad in store in the future, the poem tells you how to avoid it. If you do as the poem says, it is possible to avoid these nasty "events".
