Hello Everyone

Welcome to my talk page. Feel free to make any comments you like. I like to hear complaints as well as positive comments. Remember, we're all in this together to make Misplaced Pages an excellent information source. Thanks.

Please add your messages below

Add your message after the bottom message and start it with a section heading. Please sign your message with ~~~~ and let me know the article you're commenting on.

I check this page every few days (sometimes more often) and will normally reply to your talk page. If I've left a message on your talk page I'll add you to my watchlist so there is no need to respond here, but you can if you prefer!
I am often online 18:00-23:00 EST Monday–Friday (23:00–04:00 UTC) and unpredictably anytime Saturday–Sunday. Please keep this in mind when you leave a message and expect a reply. I am in a bit of a Wiki-slowdown. Personal and business needs have limited how much time I can spend on Misplaced Pages. I still contribute when I can.
In our discussions, can we please agree to stay in the top three tiers

Schneeferner

Hi Truthanado, I welcome your contributions to Schneeferner, many of which made sense to me and I accepted them. However I reverted a minority after careful thought because I believed the original wording (translated as faithfully as I could from German Misplaced Pages) added something to the information which was lost or watered down in the amendment. Specifically:

  • "favourable conditions even led" - The word "even" is emphasising that the glacier's retreat not only slowed down (previous sentence), but actually reversed and it grew again. I wanted to draw attention to the fact, as it bucked the trend and is not what one would expect.
  • "been on the retreat" - nothing wrong with "retreated"; I was just trying to use a more interesting turn of phrase.
  • "still covered" - The word "still" is again adding emphasis; the glacier hadn't gone completely (like the short-lived Eastern Schneeferner) but was "still" around and of reasonable size.
  • "offering very little shade" - I don't agree that offering is incorrect; the sentence's verb is "is". The word "offering" is in a sub-clause as e.g. in "He overtook dangerously, giving the oncoming driver very little chance". However, I confess I did miss out the separating comma which may be why you didn't read it as intended. I have corrected that.
  • "offering very little shade" and "very little accumulation" - "Very" is not listed as a peacock term and it would be wrong IMHO to class it as such because it is useful in conveying a sense of degree when there isn't a numerical way of doing so - enabling distinctions such as "very", "fairly", "slightly", "moderately".

Having accepted all the other changes positively, I hope you will agree that this represents a reasonable compromise. Regards. --Bermicourt (talk) 16:59, 3 January 2011 (UTC)

Murder of Joanna Yeates

Thanks for doing some edits to Murder of Joanna Yeates recently, however I noticed in several instances you changed the correct grammar to incorrect grammar e.g. "her hobbies included" -> "her hobbies include" (original was correct) "4 January" -> "4 January 2010" (should have been 2011 if anything), "have been investigating" -> "are investigating"(original was correct) so it might be worth sometimes checking your edits a little more carefully before going ahead with them? --Pontificalibus (talk) 00:28, 7 January 2011 (UTC)

Re: PittsfordTownSignRt96.png

The cases you mention have special protections. Your house is an architectural work, which by law in the United States, can be photographed freely. That is written as an exception to normal copyright law. See commons:COM:FOP#United States. That exception applies only to architectural works, not to artistic works.

The Mona Lisa, on the other hand, is indeed an artistic work, but it is very old! Leonardo is long dead, as are his immediate heirs, and so no law affords copyright protection to his works at this late date.

The sign in Pittsford is neither old enough to be out of copyright, nor subject to exceptions to U.S. copyright law. If it were part of a streetscape, it's possible a de minimis argument could be used, arguing that the sign is a minor portion of the photograph and thus the photograph would not be a copyright violation -- but such arguments are necessarily somewhat subjective.

The point remains that an artist created that sign and owns the copyright to it. If you take a picture of it, and say "this picture can be modified in any way you want" (which is effectively what you did), that circumvents the artist's rights to control how his artwork is used.

I hope this clarifies things.

Hope Bay Aerodrome

Thanks for catching that. I tend to copy and paste them to new aerodromes as they are all pretty similar. I removed the bit about using true. It's outdated but I will need to look and see exactly what they are saying now. Cheers. CambridgeBayWeather (talk) 02:03, 6 March 2011 (UTC)

Re Yumiko Kurahashi

This is fine, quite possibly an improvement, and I don't object nor am I reverting. However, it's not per MOSNUM. This sort of thing has been discussed and MOSNUM doesn't have an opinion one way or the other about placing birth locations in the parenthesized vital information following the name. (It is possible to infer this from the examples, but this would be a false inference in my view, as the MOSNUM examples exist to show the proper format of dates only, hence MOSNUM). Thus your edit summary should have been something like "for better presentation of data" or like that. Herostratus (talk) 00:47, 22 March 2011 (UTC)

I would not recommend doing that, and I think it'd likely lead to contention somewhere down the road. MOSBD points to the sections "Dates of birth and death" so it is the same deal - the examples are concerned solely with dates, so they omit and do not express an opinion on data which would just clutter the examples. (The example "Genghis Khan (c. 1162 – August 18, 1227)" could also be taken to infer that everything shown in italics here (which is in the article currently) is forbidden: "Genghis Khan (pronounced /ˈdʒɛŋɡɪs ˈkɑːn/ or /ˈɡɛŋɡɪs ˈkɑːn/; Mongolian: Чингис Хаан or ᠴᠢᠩᠭᠢᠰ ᠬᠠᠭᠠᠨ, Chinggis Khaan, or Činggis Qaγan, aka Chengiz Khan), IPA: ( listen); probably 1162–1227)").
Anyway, this has been discussed at various times, although as far as I know in a desultory manner, and I'm pretty sure no decision was ever made. It would make an interesting topic, and perhaps you could bring it up and request that birth locations be proscribed from the parenthesized vital information. And it might very well be adopted, although at I guess I would expect to see arguments along the lines of "Well, it depends, it might be critical info at times" possibly ending with a decision of No Decision, implying a "leave it as found, especially if contested" type situation as is used (I think) as the de facto standard for the inclusion/exclusion of birth dates (as opposed to just years) in the parenthsized vital information. Positive Train Control

Thanks for removing the unsupported advertizing from the Positive Train Control entry. I did a Google search on "Lilee Systems" and they don't look like they're much of anything, certainly not any kind of "leader" in PTC based radios. Damotclese (talk) 20:35, 19 May 2011 (UTC)

Numbers

The MOS says that 1,200 is as good as 1200 (if I may, I'll quote the page you cited: "Numbers with four digits to the left of the decimal point may or may not be delimited (e.g. 1250 or 1,250")). Since that is the case and since 1,200 was there first, I've reverted your edit (to that bridge page). Apologies, Ericoides (talk) 16:35, 23 August 2011 (UTC)

Thanks for the mssg. You're right, actually, so I'm quite embarrassed. Regards, Ericoides (talk) 08:05, 24 August 2011 (UTC)

Mystery

Please solve this mystery if you can...

On September 23rd, traffic to Portal:James Bond doubled, and has stayed at the new level since then. I can't figure out what happened.

See http://stats.grok.se/en/201109/Portal%3AJames_Bond

Traffic to Outline of James Bond stayed the same (though it was at the higher-level already), which leads me to suspect changes made somewhere in Misplaced Pages.

See http://stats.grok.se/en/201109/Outline%20of%20James_Bond

I'd like to find out what happened, in case it reveals helpful link placement tips that can double the traffic to outlines too!

I look forward to your reply on my talk page. The Transhumanist 00:21, 6 October 2011 (UTC)

Progress report: We are making great progress in our goal of clearing out the oldest articles (April, May, and June 2010) from the queue. There are 122 articles left in those categories, which compares very favorably with the 281 that were present at the close of the September drive. We have reduced the 2010 backlog by 184 articles so far.

Coordinator elections: The term of our second tranche of coordinators will be running out at the end of the year, and we will be accepting nominations for new coordinators early in December. The election will likely run in the last two weeks of December. Please consider helping out by nominating yourself or someone else in the Guild as one of our coordinators. The commitment is for a six-month term. Thanks.

Participation

There were 48 editors who signed-up for this drive, of which 35 participated. Thank you to everyone who helped reduce the size of the backlog!

Progress report

During the drive, we reduced the backlog by 232 articles, or by about 6%. This is a two percent increase from our September drive, when we copy edited 4% of the backlog. We were successful in our primary goal of clearing the oldest three months—March, April, and May 2010—from the queue. Thanks to all who helped copy edit these difficult articles. Thus far we have reduced the copy edit backlog by 5086 articles, or by about 61%. End-of-drive results and barnstar information can be found here.

Coordinator election

The term of our second tranche of coordinators has run out, and we will be accepting nominations from December 5, 00:01 UTC to December 15, 23:59 UTC. GOCE March 2012 Backlog Elimination progress graphs

Greetings from the Guild of Copy Editors March 2012 Backlog elimination drive! Here's the mid-drive newsletter.

Participation: We have had 58 people sign up for this drive so far, which compares favorably with our last drive, and 27 have copy-edited at least one article. If you have signed up but have not yet copy-edited any articles, please consider doing so. Every bit helps! If you haven't signed up yet, it's not too late. Join us!

Progress report: Our target of completing the 2010 articles has almost been reached, with only 56 remaining of the 194 we had at the start of the drive. The last ones are always the most difficult, so thank you if you are able to help copy-edit any of the remaining articles. We have reduced the total backlog by 163 articles so far.

Special thanks: Special thanks to Stfg, who has been going through the backlog and doing some preliminary vetting of the articles—removing copyright violations, doing initial clean-up, and nominating some for deletion. This work has helped make the drive a more pleasant experience for all our volunteers.

GOCE March 2012 Backlog Elimination progress graph

Greetings from the Guild of Copy Editors March 2012 Backlog elimination drive! This is the most successful drive we have had for quite a while. Here is your end-of-drive wrap-up newsletter.

Participation

Of the 70 people who signed up for this drive, 40 copy-edited at least one article. Thanks to all who participated! Special acknowledgement goes out to Lfstevens, who did over 200 articles, most of them in the last third of the drive, and topped all three leaderboard categories. You're a superstar! Stfg and others have been pre-checking the articles for quality and conformance to Misplaced Pages guidelines; some have been nominated for deletion or had some preliminary clean-up done to help make the copy-edit process more fun and appealing. Thanks to all who helped get those nasty last few articles out of the target months.

Progress report

During this drive we were successful in eliminating our target months—October, November, and December 2010—from the queue, and have now eliminated all the 2010 articles from our list. We were able to complete 500 articles this month! End-of-drive results and barnstar information can be found here.

When working on the backlog, please keep in mind that there are options other than copy-editing available; some articles may be candidates for deletion, or may not be suitable for copy-editing at this time for other reasons. The {{GOCEreviewed}} tag can be placed on any article you find to be totally uneditable, and you can nominate for deletion any that you discover to be copyright violations or completely unintelligible. If you need help deciding what to do, please contact any of the coordinators.

Thank you for participating in the March 2012 drive! All contributions are appreciated. Our next copy-edit drive will be in May.

Wonthaggi desalination plant

Hey, thanks for those updates to the article. They WERE needed. I do, however, take issue with your Edit summary. Miles, etc aren't "International unit". They are, these days, American units. Everybody else, except for Libya and Burma, has officially metricated (although the UK's process is very slow). Not meaning to be rude. Just very sensitive to this at the moment due to some nasty happenings at the UK metrication article. HiLo48 (talk) 12:35, 8 April 2012 (UTC)

Progress report: We're on track to meet our targets for the drive, largely due to the efforts of Lfstevens and the others on the leaderboard. Thanks to all. We have reduced our target group of articles—January, February, and March 2011—by over half, and it looks like we will achieve that goal. Good progress is being made on the overall backlog as well, with over 500 articles copy-edited during the drive so far. The total backlog currently sits at around 3200 articles.

Hall of Fame: GOCE coordinator Diannaa was awarded a spot in the GOCE Hall of Fame this month! She has copy-edited over 1567 articles during these drives, and surpassed the 1,000,000-word mark on May 5. On to the second million! – Your drive coordinators: Dank, Diannaa and Stfg

If you've signed up but haven't yet copy-edited any articles, every bit helps; if you haven't signed up yet, it's not too late. Template:J

Progress report: We're almost on track to meet our targets for the drive. Great work, guys. We have reduced our target group of articles—May, June, and July 2011—by about 40%, and the overall backlog has been reduced by 264 articles so far, to around 2500 articles.

Copy Edit of the Month: Starting in August, your best copy-editing work of the month will be eligible for fabulous prizes! See here for details. – Your drive coordinators: Stfg, Allens, and Torchiest.

Edits to Boeing 377

Hello, I noticed you changed the formatting for dates in this article from the American style (month-day-year) to the European style (day-month-year) of formatting dates. I changed all the dates back; please see Talk:Boeing 377 for a more complete explanation, and post your comments there. Thanks, Compdude 19:11, 22 July 2012 (UTC)

We are just two articles away from completing all requests made before July 2012 (both are in progress).

GCOR

"The introductory statement about Class I's west of the Mississippi has been modified, per you comment on the article's talk page." Are you sure your change is correct? --NE2 03:17, 29 July 2012 (UTC)

OK, but it's still unclear. Is it used on all Class I lines west of the Mississippi? Is it only used on lines west of the Mississippi in those systems that cross? Is it used on CSX, which doesn't cross it? In short, which railroads use it, and do any use it on only some of their lines? --NE2 03:39, 29 July 2012 (UTC)

GOCE news and September drive invitation

Invitation from the Guild of Copy Editors

The Guild of Copy Editors invites you to participate in its events:

  • The August 2012 Copy Edit of the Month Contest is currently in the submissions stage. Submit your best August copy edit there before the end of the month. Submissions end, and discussion and voting begin, on September 1 at 00:00 (UTC).
  • September 2012 Backlog elimination drive is a month-long effort to reduce the size of the copy edit backlog. The drive begins on September 1 at 00:00 (UTC) and ends on September 30 at 23:59 (UTC). Our goals are to copy edit the articles tagged longest ago and to complete all requests placed before the end of August. Barnstars will be awarded to anyone who copy edits at least one article, and special awards will be given to the top six in the following categories: "Number of articles", "Number of words", "Number of articles of over 5,000 words", "Number of articles tagged longest ago", and "Longest article". This drive features a much easier signup process. We hope to see you there! – Your drive coordinators: Stfg, Allens, and Torchiest.
