More than every 1 in 3 Iranian speaks a Turkic dialect as mother tongue and there are also a sizable number of Iranian citizens who speak Turkic dialects as a second language. As Turkic speakers, they have been present in Iranian history for around a thousand years. It is not clear if they have been among Iranians and became speakers of Turkic languages due to presence of Turkic conquerers or they are at least partly Turkic immigrants to the area. In any case, their influence on Iranian history and culture has been immense. Most of dynasties ruled Iran after Islam and pre Islamic revelution were Turkic speaking. Many of Iranian historical and contemporary figures have been from Turkic speaking Iranians.

Most of Iranian Turks are Azeris. There are, however, many other Turkic speaking Iranians living in all other provinces, especially in central and southern provinces of Iran. They probably have migrated from areas of Azerbaijan during the last 5-6 centuries BC or more and have their own unique culture and identity that is a mixed of what they inherited and the local surrounding culture.
