Trabzonspor is a professional Turkish football club located in the city of Trabzon, Turkey. Formed in 1967 through a merger of several local clubs, Trabzonspor won six championships in Turkish Super League. The Club won their first Championship title in 1975 which is also the Club's initiation year in Turkish Super League. Trabzonspor won the championship title again during their second year in the Turkish Super League in 1976, was runner-up in 1977 and won 3 Championship titles in a row during the following years 1978, 1979, 1980. The club colours are claret and blue, and they play their home matches at Hüseyin Avni Aker Stadium. The club has donned maroon and blue kits since the merger, and have played at their present ground since 1967.

Domestically, Trabzonspor is known as one of the "Top 4 Soccer/Football Clubs" of Turkey based on the number of cups won. They have won the Süper Lig (top-flight) six times, and are known as the first non Istanbul-based club who ever achieved such a feat and the only club to win the championship during their first year (as well as the second year) in Turkish Super League. They have also won the Federation Cup (Turkish Cup) eight times. From 1976 to 1984, Trabzonspor won a total of 30 trophies: Super League (6), Federation (Turkish) Cup (8), Süper Kupa (Super Cup) (8), the Başbakanlık Kupası (Chancellor Cup) (5), Red Group Championship Second Division (İkinci Lig Kırmızı Grup Şampiyonası) (1) and Cyprus Peace Cup (Kıbrıs Barış Kupası) (1). They have the distinction of being the only Turkish club to win both men's and women's top level football league titles.

History

Establishment

After the World War I, football in Trabzon city was about to be loved and started to grow in the 1920s via the high schools in the town. In 1921 İdmanocağı and in 1924 İdmangücü were established and became the cities most famous clubs until Trabzonspor. In 1962–63, president of Turkish Football Federation, Orhan Şeref Apak, to improve the league standards in Turkey, decided to open “National Football Leagues”. There will be city teams in those leagues. However, there were conflict between İdmanocağı and İdmangücü in Trabzon and they don’t want to unite their forces to establish a team in Trabzon. In 1966, June 21, after İdmanocağı decided not to join any other team in Trabzon, İdmangücü, Martıspor and Karadenizgücü came together to establish “Trabzonspor Gençlik Kulübü” with the main colors, red and white. Ali Osman Ulusoy was the first president of that team. However, team’s formal name was “Trabzonspor 1966” in official records. They play one year in the league but after that they terminated the club. The name changed as “Trabzonspor”. In 1967, August 2, İdmanocağı, İdmangücü, Martıspor and Karadenizgücü came together to establish Trabzonspor to play in Turkish Second League ..

Staff in the first years of Trabzonspor

Trabzonspor is basically a football club till its establishment. Their first manager was Hayri Gür. Hayri Gür was born in 1912 at Limni. His real name was Hayrettin but he refuses to use it. His father was the last mayor of Limni. He knew German, too. He, at first, appointed to Trabzon as a teacher. He was not just a physical education teacher, he was also music, geographics and German teacher. Before appointed to Trabzon, in an army practice in Aegean, he won a prize and that prize was given to him Atatürk. He was interested in lots of sports but at most with football. Hayri Gür died in 2010 when he was 98 years old. He was the oldest member of Trabzonspor. After his death, his name is given to an arena which Trabzonspor Basketball teams plays its games. Trabzonspor’s stadium name is Hüseyin Avni Aker Stadium and its name was given with the help of Hayri Gür. Avni Aker was the first physical education teacher in Trabzon and when the name was given, he was the Director of Youth and Sports in Trabzon. The first president was Ali Osman Ulusoy. However, he was the president in the terminated team. After the team established again, the new president were Rıfat Dedeoğlu and Ali Osman Ulusoy. Rıfat Dedeoğlu died in 2004, November 6.

Şamil Ekinci Museum

The opening of the museum was at 1996, September 23 with the name of “Trabzonspor Müzesi”. Its name changes at 2008. There are nearly 600 cups and other historical materials in the museum. There are 6 Turkish Super League Cups, 8 Turkish Cups, 7 Presidental Cups, 5 Chancellor Cups, Cyrpus Peace Cup, Super Cup and other materials in the building. It’s open from 9 am to 5 pm in week days and from 11 am to 5 pm in weekends.

Memorials

There are three memorials in Trabzon that represents the history. Two of them are in the city center, the other one is at Sürmene.

• Trabzonspor Memorial: It was opened at 2008, November 26. It is nearly 200 metres away from the Hüseyin Avni Aker Stadium.
• Trabzonspor Park: It was opened at 2010, August 2, with the banner of “Those who died for the sake of a love” and there is an memorial in it.
• Sürmene Trabzonspor Memorial: It was opened at 2010, May 12 by the mayor of Sürmene for Trabzonspor.

Presidents

Color History

The most important issue in the establishment of Trabzonspor was the colors of the club. The most important clubs in Trabzonspor’s establishment are İdmanocağı and İdmangücü, both wanted the clubs color as their color. At first the colors were red and white but after it changed to claret and blue. It is told that the clubs color are taken from the clubs mascot, anchovy, its eyes are nearly claret and its color is nearly blue. There is another saying that tells, the clubs color are taken chosen by İdmangücü and İdmanocağı one by one. However, the true story is its colors are taken from Aston Villa. One of the most successful clubs in England at that time was Aston Villa and the clubs early history show that they were wearing the shirts that are normally belongs to Aston Villa but there was Trabzonspor and Turkey emblem on those. Because of that the clubs colors are light blue and dark claret. Till 2010 the alternative color was orange but after that year the alternative color was chosen as grey.

Emblem

Trabzonspor short name is “TS” and in its emblem those characters are written. There is written 1967 where those two characters intersects. There is also a ball over those letters in order to show all sport activities and also a yellow star in order to show 6 championships. The emblem was registered to club at 2003, May 16.

Establishment years

In 1967, the club was in Turkish Second League White Group. Their first year in this league, and also their first year as a professional football club, was finished at the sixth place. The next two years was finished at the forth place and after that year they were in 8th place. In 1971–72 season, they finished second the Red Group so they were nearly promoting the Turkish First League. One year later, they lost the chance again with just by some goals. In 1973–74 season finally they promoted to the Turkish First League by 6 point deficite between them and the second team, Sakaryaspor. They played championship game with the other groups, White Group, leader Zonguldakspor and beat them in penalty shotouts.

Championship years

Their first year in the Turkish First League was not a good one. They finished the season at 9th place. Beyond that they reached the Turkish Cup final but lost it to Beşiktaş by 1–0 against 0–2. Total score was 2–1 against Besiktaş so thay were the champions of Turkish Cup. In 1975–76 season, after the match that was played at Trabzon and won by 1–0 by Trabzonspor against Fenerbahçe, they took the lead and never gave it back. That was their first championship in league history and they were the first Anatolian team that wins this league. Till that year there were no champions besides Galatasaray, Beşiktaş and Fenerbahçe. After their first championship they get 5 more till 1983–84 season. Necmi Perekli ones became the top goal scorer in the league with finishing the league with 19 goals. Şenol Güneş became the goalkeeper who never beaten by 1110 minutes. That was the league record.

Between 1984–96

Between those years, the club tries to change the culture in itself. They were always finishing the league between 3rd and 7th place. 1992–93 season’s first 10 week was their worst season opening, they were down by 10 points from the leader. However, Ünal Karaman, one of the best players in Trabzonspor history, gained by the club. He was later captain of the Turkey. There was also Tolunay Kafkas. The club won 2 Turkish Cups (1992, 1995), won a Presidental Cup (1995), and won 2 Chancellor Cups (1985, 1994). In 1994–95 and 1995–96 seasons, they finished the league in the second place.

1995–96 season and its effects

In 1993–94 season Şenol Güneş appointed as the new manager of the club. The clubs most importants players at those years were Ogün Temizkanoğlu, Ünal Karaman and Hami Mandıralı. The new comers were Shota Arveladze and Archil Arveladze. Shota Arveladze was the goal scoring leader in the league in 1995–96 season. In 1994–95 season they lost the championship to Beşiktaş but won both Presidental Cup and Chancellor Cup. In 1995–96 season, they were the leader till the game which player in Trabzon against Fenerbahçe. If they won, they would be really close to a championship. Even if they were leading by 1–0, they lost that game and lost the chance to be the champion. That really hurt the team and for years they could not match the opponents those who try to win a championship. There were rumours about match-fixing in that game however nothing is proved still. At the beginning of the 2000s, for the sake of changing the spirit in the club thay sold players like Abdullah Ercan, Ogün Temizkanoğlu and Tolunay Kafkas. These players were changed by Rune Lange, Kevin Campell and Jean-Jacques Misse-Misse. Those players were high profile players.

2000s

The 2001–02 season was the worst season in the clubs history. They finished the league at 14th place. Besides that season, they lost most in their history and saw the ball in their goal most in their history. After that year Ibrahim Yattara, a legend in club history, and Michael Petkovic like players are transferred. Gökdeniz Karadeniz and Fatih Tekke were two players from the youth team and they were also two near legends in the club history. These team twice chased the championship but lost both of them to Fenerbahçe. In those years, there were rumours about match-fixing, too. However, again, nothing is proved. In the year of 2008, Sadri Şener became the president of the club. Most of the players in the team were released. The new manager became Ersun Yanal and lots of players are transferred according to his wishes. In that season, they chased the championship till the end of the season but lost it again and finish the season in 3rd place. Next season Hugo Broos was the new manager for just a few months but after that Şenol Güneş was introduced as the new manager. In 2010–11 season they chased the championship again, against Fenerbahçe, and they lost it again. There were rumours about match-fixing again. This time Fenerbahçe’s president Aziz Yıldırım sentenced for match-fixing and prisoned. However the Turkish Football Federation gave the Championship Cup to Fenerbahçe.

The Claret-Blues have an estimated approximately 12 million supporters, they have a fanatical fanbase drawing most of their support from the Trabzon province and surrounding regions, recent studies have shown that 72% of Trabzon support their local club. Supporting Trabzonspor has become synonymous with being Trabzonlu (a person from Trabzon), there is a strong sense of city and regional pride in their team. Trabzonspor don’t have a unified ultra group, instead they have many splinter groups and small ultra firms, 61 Gençlik, Çılgınlar, Vira to name a few, there are around 15–20 active groups.

61st minute celebrations

Trabzonspor are renowned for their 61st minute festivities, the stadium is set alight with fireworks, confetti and a jubilant crowd. This is a Trabzonspor tradition – 61 is their city code and in the 61st minute of every game the supporters go crazy and create a great atmosphere.

Stadium

Trabzonspor have used Hüseyin Avni Aker Stadium throughout their history. The stadium was built in 1951 with 2,500 seats, and has been renovated in 1967, 1981, 1994–1998, 2008, and 2010. The current capacity is 28,169 seats. The field is made of natural grass and measures 68 by 105 meters. The stadium is named after Hüseyin Avni Aker, a teacher and educational administrator who contributed much to local sports in Trabzon.

Trabzonspor A2

Trabzonspor A2 is a youth team of Trabzonspor. The club competes in the A2 league, alongside other A2 clubs around Turkey. The A2 team is made up of players between the ages of 18 and 20, and it is the last level of amateur play before a footballer reaches professional status in Turkey. Notable former players include Hami Mandıralı (highest capped Trabzonspor player (558 times)), Gökdeniz Karadeniz (most caps for the Turkish national team by a Trabzonspor player (50)), Fatih Tekke (2004–05 Süper Lig top scorer (31 goals)), Hüseyin Çimşir, Mehmet Yılmaz, Tolga Zengin, and Metin Aktaş.

Trabzonspor Women

Trabzonspor Kulübü Bayan Futbol Takımı are a Turkish women's association football club affiliated with Trabzonspor. The club was founded in 2007, and won its first league title in 2009. With the championship win, Trabzonspor are the only club in Turkey to win both the men's and women's top-flight football competition. The women's team were invited to participate in the 2009–10 UEFA Women's Champions League. The club placed third in Group D, winning one match and losing two.

Trabzon Karadenizspor

In 2008, Trabzonspor bought Trabzon Karadenizspor to act as a feeder club, having first option on players, as well as being able to loan out youngsters to gain first-team experience. The club also agreed to an affiliation deal with Dutch club MVV the same year, allowing them first option on their players. The first step in the affiliation deal came when Trabzonspor transferred Christian Brüls and Faty Papy and loaned them back to MVV.
