B1A4 (Template:Lang-ko) is a South Korean idol group based in Seoul, formed and managed by WM Entertainment. The group is a male quintet consisting of their leader Jinyoung, rapper Baro, main vocal Sandeul, vocal and sub-rapper CNU, and vocalist Gongchan. They made their debut in 2011 with the release of their first EP "Let's Fly" which contained their debut single "OK" a rock and electronic infused pop track. They were first introduced to the public through a "webtoon". They have released a studio album, 2 EPs and various singles in Korea.
The group began their foray into the Japanese market last December 2011 with a showcase and in 2012 they released their first compilation album that consisted of all the tracks of their 2 EPs "Let's Fly" and "it B1A4". Last June 27, 2012 the group released their debut single which is a remake of Beautiful Target. The single peaked at number 4 on the Oricon Chart with 32,000 units sold on the first day. The group's second single which is the Japanese version of Sleep Well, Good Night from their first repackaged album is set to be released on August 29.
Etymology
The group's name, B1A4, has a connection with the members' blood types. Members Jinyoung, CNU, Sandeul and Gongchan are type A and member Baro is a type B, hence the numbers 1 and 4 to make the group name "B1A4". "Be the one, all for one." is another explanation concerning the group's name meaning that they'll do their best as what everyone expects them to.
The group has been dubbed several nicknames, one of which was "countryside-dols" (countryside idols). The Korean media often uses this nickname due to the fact that all of the members of B1A4 are from the countryside namely Jinyoung is from Chungju, Chungcheongbuk-do; CNU from Cheongju, Chungcheongbuk-do; Sandeul from Busan, Baro from Kwangju, Jeollanam-do; and Gongchan from Suncheon, Jeollanam-do. They were also referred to as "blood-dols" (blood idols) in reference to the origins of their name, as well as "paper-dols" (paper idols) because of the paper classification "A4". In an effort to distinguish themselves, B1A4 had also promoted a nickname "saessakdol" (새싹돌, "sprout-dol") and created a so-called "saessakchum" (새싹춤, "sprout move"), which was showcased in various shows including Quiz to Change the World.
History
Pre-debut
Baro, the rapper of the group, got into the company first when a representative saw his photo posted on his friend's Cyworld mini homepage. He performed a version of Jo Soo Mi's 'Once I Leave' and Sung Shi Kyung's 'The Path Leading to Me' earning him a spot on the group which is to be B1A4. The group's leader Jinyoung got into the company by acting out the character 'Gong-gil' from the movie "Man of the King". Gongchan, the youngest got into the company when he won Cyworld's "Ulljang Challange" when he was in middle school. His pretty boy looks has also been acknowledged by the company when he won a cross-dressing contest while performing Ivy's song. Vocal and sub-rapper, CNU got into the company when he joined in a teenage singing contest, after smiling on stage an agent fell head-over-heels over him and recruited him to be in the group that is now B1A4. Sandeul, the main vocal, was the last one to join. He got into the company when he sang a song of Kim Yun Woo for a talent contest that caught the attention of an agent.
Prior to the group's official debut, they had undergone rigurous training in singing and dancing. Jinyoung and Gongchan had some training in acting for a while as well.
2011: Let's Fly and it B1A4
The members of the rookie group B1A4 were first revealed through a web toon prior to the release of their official photos. Even before debut, the group already gained attention through the unique promotion technique that their label "WM Entertainment" used, they were promoted as "idols who came out of a comic or webtoon" and the latter had received a hot response for netizens locally and internationally. Initially, they were believed to be a co-ed group due to the fact that in the web toon a female character named "Anna" was introduced. Turns out that the group consisted of 5 members that are all boys when member Jinyoung's photo was first released on April 10, 2011 along with his story on the web toon. Baro, Gongchan, Sandeul, and CNU's photos were released on April 11–14, 2011 respectively along with their respective stories. Their debut EP, Let's Fly was released digitally and physically on April 21, 2011 along with the full MV, having released the MV teaser 2 days before on April 18, 2011. The group made their debut performance on the April 23 episode of MBC's Show! Music Core and was deemed to be a successful performance for the group grabbing the attention of netizens. They had their subsequent debut stages on Mnet's M! Countdown, KBS' Music Bank and SBS' The Music Trend on April 28, April 29 and May 1 respectively. On May 1 they had their first ever radio show guesting on Park Gyungrim's Starry Night Radio on MBC FM4U.
On June 22, 2011 the first episode of their first reality show MTV's Match Up was aired, and it co-starred fellow rookie idol group Block B. The first episode of the show featured the group's MV for their follow-up track "Only Learned the Bad Things" which is also included in ther first EP. The song was noted for it was one of the last songs penned by Wheesung (for other people) prior to his enlisment to the army in 2011. The show allows both groups (B1A4 and Block B) to develop their talents and let their unseen charms be discovered by the viewers through their daily activities as rookie groups in the Korean music industry. The show 'Match Up' lasted for 8 episodes. The music video for "Only Learned the Bad Things" was revealed publicly on June 22, 2011 and promotions for the follow-up single started on MBC's Show! Music Core and stages for the other music shows followed afterwards. Promotions for their debut EP ended on July 17, 2011.
Around the end of August, rumors of the group's impending comeback floated around the internet and was considered false until on August 30, the fanclub moderator of B1A4 revealed that the boys indeed are coming back with a new EP in the next month. Little details were known and the fans were left to keep on waiting. On September 4, 2011, their agency WM Entertainment started to reveal teaser images for the groups comeback with their second EP entitled "it B1A4", Jinyoung's teaser was the first one revealed followed BARO on September 5, CNU on the 6th, Sandeul on the 7th and lastly youngest Gongchan on the 8th. Teaser for their title track "Beautiful Target" was originally supposed to be released on the 9th but due to a leak it was revealed on the 8th with the music video of the title track revealed after 6 days on the 15th. The physical and digital album was released a day after and promotions for the album kicked-off on KBS' Music Bank on the same day. Subsequent comeback stages for MBC's Show! Music Core, SBS' The Music Trend and Mnet's M! Countdown were held on the 17th, 18th and the 22nd respectively.
Upon releasing the album, the group topped several off-line charts such as Kyobobook, Aladdin, Interpark, Yes24, Apple Music and many other off-line charts. According to their agency WM Entertainment, the album is near the 25,000 mark in their sales and is slowly becoming the best-selling album for a rookie that year. Their EP "it B1A4" proved to be a successful release for the group, although unable to win any music show awards, the group's overall popularity shot up and they immediately became one of the most recognized rookies along with APINK, Boyfriend, Dal Shabet. On October 6, an alternate version of their Beautiful Target MV was released entitled "Beautiful Target (ZOOM ZOOM ver.)".
Though currently not active in album promotions, their first and second mini album sales figures increased steadily. By the end of 2011, B1A4 placed 22nd place on the Hanteo Chart (the representative music chart of South Korea)— making them the only rookies, who debuted in the past year, to place in the top 50. The combined sales of both their mini-albums exceeds 100,000 copies according to a representative of the chart.
On November it was announced by the agency that they would promote another track off the mini-album but no MV will be produced for it. The second single off their second EP, entitled " My Love" was produced and written by One Way member Chance. Promotions for the track began on KBS's Music Bank and stages on MBC's Show! Music Core and SBS' The Music Trend followed. On the December 3 episode of MBC's music show Show! Music Core, the group held their goodbys stage thus ending the promotions for "it B1A4".
During their "Beautiful Target" promotions, the group stirked a deal with Japanese company Pony Canyon. A representative of the company stated that they were struck by the quality of the songs that was included in their debut EP and that their smooth choreography and instinctive fashion was also an added bonus. They also stated that actor Jang Keun-suk who was in the same label as B1A4 in Japan said that they had untapped potential. The company announced that the group would have a showcase on December 9, 2011 at the Sinagawa Stellar Ball in the heart of Tokyo. An album that was slated for a January release was also announced.
On November 14, Korean media outlets started reporting that tickets to the group's first showcase on Japan was sold out in just a minute, an unusual feat that is achieved by any rookie in Japan. What surprised them the most is that, B1A4 was still a rookie in Korea and selling out all tickets on their showcase is a good sign of their rising popularity. A total of 1,000 people got into the showcase where they performed a total of 9 songs inclduing both 'OK' and Beautiful Target'. During the showcase,it was announced by member BARO that a special fanclub inauguration will take place sometime in April and it was also announced that they will release a compilation album consisting all the tracks from their 2 previous EPs in released in Korea. The group released their first official photobook entitled "B1A4 – First Photobook : Private Special Edition" on December 15, 2011 and as of the 26th of the same month the photobook has been sold out and no re-production has been made by their agency. After the showcase, the group then performed on the year-end music festivals that each public broadcasting companies hold each year in Korea.

A repackaged version of their first studio album is scheduled for release on May 24 digitally while the physical copy will be released on the 29th. On the same day of their official Japanese debut, their single "Beautiful Target" ranked #4 on the Oricon charts along with famous Japanese boy band, KAT-TUN, and popular Korean girl group, Girls' Generation. A representative of their agency stated, “We’re surprised by the fact that B1A4 ranked within the top 5 on the Oricon Chart despite being a foreign rookie group, and a group that hasn’t begun promotions in Japan. Representatives in the music industry and fans are showing high interest in their next move.” According to WM Entertainment, their second Japanese single, "Sleep Well, Goodnight" (jap: "おやすみ good night"; romaji: o-ya-su-mi good night) , will hit stores on August 29. After much speculation from netizens, KBS Joy confirmed that Season 6 of Hello Baby will indeed feature B1A4. KBS’s CP Lim Yong Hyun reported that B1A4 has started the photo shoot for their ‘Hello Baby’ season 6 profile shots. The soon-to-be-fathers are preparing for this season’s concept of “Hello Family’s Seoul Sightseeing”. KBS JOY PD Lim Yong Hyun clarified, “The plan is to have B1A4 along with two children aged five years old, to travel around Seoul in order to embark on the process of mastering the city. In this season of ‘Hello Baby’, two 5-year-old “babies” will be participating. As they are respectively from the Gyeongsang and Jeolla provinces, the two children, with their regional accents and sweet personalities, are expected to bring a new kind of entertainment to the show." On Lauren Lunde's (from MBLAQ's Hello Baby) official facebook page, they revealed that Lauren is scheduled to film in B1A4's Hello Baby starting on August 1st.
In response to why he selected B1A4 for season 6, he stated “ All of the previous idol groups appeared on ‘Hello Baby’ when they were in the process of reaching the next important step in their career. The program became a helpful boost in that goal. B1A4 is in a similar situation. They are in the middle of preparing for their promotions in Japan, and they have much potential to become bigger Hallyu stars. They are well known in Korea, and we casted them because we look forward to high viewer ratings. I’ve watched B1A4′s music video and I liked it. I’m content with our choice.”
B1A4's Hello Baby succeeded in capturing teenage girl's hearts. According to the report released by AGB Nielson Media Research, ‘B1A4′s Hello Baby’ recorded 1.503% in viewer ratings with females in their teens. Considering the fact that any cable show is considered a success if their ratings reach 1%, the show is off to a great start. Following the success of previous seasons, season 6 with B1A4 and the group’s unique brand of energy and enthusiasm has increased viewer ratings. Fans have also been very excited about the show. They commented, “B1A4′s charms are finally being shown“, “Everything the babies do is so lovely“, “Love the small missions“, and “When the first-time daddies panic, it’s the funniest“.
On July 23, Gongchan underwent surgery to remove a kidney. WM Entertainment revealed "During promotions for ‘Sleep Well, Good Night’, Gongchan had complained of pains in his side. After receiving a complete medical checkup at the hospital, it was revealed that his kidney was not functioning well. However, Gongchan had a strong desire to continue with promotions and receive surgery after the group’s activities, so we decided to delay his surgery. Whenever Gongchan experienced pain, he’d receive painkillers and continue with promotions. He always had a bright smile while thinking of his fellow members and his fans, making his medical condition unaware to the public. Gongchan had personally asked to keep the news of his surgery quiet because he did not want to cause unnecessary concern for his fans." According to Gongchan’s doctor, “Gongchan was diagnosed with congenital narrowing of his ureter, leading one side of his kidney to not function at all. Therefore, we decided on a surgery to remove one of his kidneys.”
After one week, Gongchan was released from the hospital and returned to his hometown for rest. Meanwhile, Jinyoung, Sandeul, Baro, and CNU also returned to their hometowns. This marked B1A4's first vacation since 3 years. Fans reported sighting the members in their hometowns of Cheongju, Chungju, Busan, and Suncheon starting on July 28. According to WM Entertainment, B1A4 never got a day to rest since their trainee days because of their busy schedule of album production and promotions. Since Gongchan went home to recover after his recent surgery, the rest of the members went on their first vacation in three years to recharge.
The group is also scheduled to release a new OST track, titled "Hey Girl" on August 14. The song will be the title track for the upcoming drama "The Thousandth Man". This will be B1A4's second OST track— both, being the main themes of its respective dramas. In addition, it has been said that B1A4 will have a short cameo in the drama.
