School of Dental Medicine University of Zagreb (Template:Lang-hr: , acronym: SFZG) is leading institution for graduate and postgraduate education in the field of dental medicine in Croatia. It is established in 1962 as separate institution, but the idea exists from 1922 with it's founder Professor Eduard Radošević.
History
The history of the School of Dental Medicine University of Zagreb includes three phases of development: formation and initial period from 1922 to 1948, formation of Odontology Section from 1948 to 1962 and formation and rise of School of Dental Medicine as separate institution from 1962 to present days.
Eighty years ago, on January 20th, 1922 in School of Medicine University of Zagreb it was founded Chair of Odontology with founding head, Ass. Prof. Eduard Radošević. In those days there were a little space for lectures, especially for clinical dental courses. That existed until 1935 when Chair created it's dental practice. That practice evolved next year to dental department and two years from formation, in 1935, to dental clinic with founding director, Prof. Radošević, and two adjacent assistants, but yet inside parent Clinic of Otorinolaringology. In 1939, Dental Clinic separates with a new head in Professor Ivo Čupar. In the same period, Chair received it's second faculty, ass.prof. Juraj Kallay, which strongly enhanced both theoretical and practical courses.
After the Second World War, in 1948 began operating a separate Odontological Department in the School of Medicine, University of Zagreb, in which the special education program lasted five years. In doing so, the students from Odontological Department attended classes together with the students of general medicine. From the third year of study, dental students attended classes separately. The first teachers were Dr. Živko Bolf and Dr. Miroslav Suvin.
Ministry of Public Health of the People's Republic of Croatia in 1951, upon the proposal of the Council for Higher Medical Education, issued the Executive order of organization of Odontological Department and its relationship with the Faculty of Medicine in Zagreb. Classes are divided into general medical and vocational subjects, with it's elected teachers and Prof. Ivo Čupar, Dr. Zdenko Njemirovskij, Dr. Vitold Ritterman and Dr. Dalibor Svoboda. In 1954, first eight students completed dental degree.
Name Odontological Section was replaced in 1957 by the name of Dentistry Department, and graduate students have received academic title of "doctor medicinae stomatologicae". Organizational changes are in turn reflected 1958. and 1959. and refurbished the building in Gundulićeva 5 based five institutes: Institute for Dental Surgery (Head Dr. Dalibor Svoboda), Department of Prosthodontics (Head Dr. Miroslav Suvin), Department of Dental Pathology (Head Dr. Zdenko Njemirovskij), Department of Regulation of Jaws and Teeth (Head Dr. Živko Bolf) and the Department of Pediatric and Preventive Dentistry (Head Dr. Oskar Štern).
Dentistry study in academic term 1960/61 finally received it's first Associate Dean: Professor Miroslav Suvin. Following the promotion of biomedical area, dentistry has evolved into a special field in Europe and America and many independent dental colleges formed.
Following these events, and the persistent efforts of our leading experts, Croatian Parliament made the decision in 1962. of establishing of independent School of Dental Medicine, University of Zagreb. In the same decision, as a founding dean was appointed Professor Živko Bolf. This created the essential prerequisites for further educational, scientific and technical progress, and over the decades to the present. For purposes of clinical courses, University of Zagreb issued a decision in 1971 of naming of General Hospital "Dr. Mladen Stojanović" as a clinical teaching base for the training of dental students. This has provided an excellent cooperation in teaching of clinical medical subjects.
Today, the Faculty of Dentistry at the University of Zagreb with its organization, curriculum and results holds the profession in Croatia. It nurtures all that is positive in its traditions and at the same time trying to meet the conditions, to reach and provide European standards.
