Gigs are 30-foot-long boats, and people from different islands would row out to a wreck. Whoever reached the wreck first would claim all the treasures for their island. Sometimes, the boat would not be a wreck, but a boat needing a pilot to steer the ship into the port. The captain would usually give the people of the island a little money, and that meant a lot because the people who lived on the Isles of Scilly were quite poor. Now, gig racing is practised as a sport.
