York City F.C. seasons

Hi, can you please take another look at your changes to {{York City F.C. seasons}}. The changes appear to have centred the text where the text is supposed to be columnised with the years in the decades under each other The change causes problems with the initial and last lines of data where the columnisation is not maintained. Also the 1999–2000 line is slightly out of alignment. Thanks Keith D (talk) 21:30, 20 August 2012 (UTC)

there is no way to keep the columns in alignment without introducing some sort of table. centering it, I felt, was a compromise. is it really that bad? Frietjes (talk) 21:33, 20 August 2012 (UTC)
see, for example, Template:A.F.C. Bournemouth seasons, Template:Aston Villa F.C. seasons, ...? Frietjes (talk) 21:35, 20 August 2012 (UTC)
Much better columnised as it was prior to change. The examples are no better and could do with a revert to an older version. Keith D (talk) 23:49, 20 August 2012 (UTC)

Template:Region history

Still, the template doesn't show details after line 35, e.g. Template:History of Armenia, could you fix it again? Or should we revert most of edits by User:Uzume in the template? ༆ (talk) 22:41, 20 August 2012 (UTC)

the problem is that the sidebar template does not take more than 35 fields. the solution is to do what is suggested in the documentation. it's really not that hard to fix ... Frietjes (talk) 22:47, 20 August 2012 (UTC)
Oh no, I don't think it looks good when the width of the template increased. Or maybe we can use the simple trick that I used in Template:History of Bangladesh. ༆ (talk) 23:12, 20 August 2012 (UTC)
go ahead and change the width to whatever you want, but the solution is to use either plainlist or hlist (e.g., Template:History of Kazakhstan). Frietjes (talk) 23:14, 20 August 2012 (UTC)

Re: Current Event Cal Templates with the time variable.

Looks okay to me! I can adopt the revised usage going forward—feel free to pitch in creating future calendars, btw—you ostensibly understand what’s going on here (see also the first entry here, where it’s previously been incorporated by an anon user: http://en.wikipedia.org/User_talk:198.102.153.2). On the same subject of streamlining, I had intended to begin to experiment and sandbox calendar templates that would cover 365/366 days of any future year, and completely automate the process with permanent templates, or solicit the creation of a bot that might generate them on the fly instead, to perpetualize the calendar "day picker" feature. There are only 28 different “flavors” of month, for a start: 7 31-day months, 7 30s, 7 29s and 7 28s. Generating each day of every month is the challenge—it used to be done every 24 hours, and subject to vandalism on a regular basis.
Have at it! I trust this is all adequately documented. Cheers, and thanks in advance.

Followup Numero Uno: The conditional "self-destruct" code doesn’t propagate out as a visible tag, to show up as a candidate for deletion (easy to check, and I did). I have to blank the pages myself by deleting all but the g7 tag. That’s why a bot is a possible idea. (updated: must’ve missed that July 10 cal!)
---Schweiwikist (talk) 22:18, 28 August 2012 (UTC) (updated)

Followup Numero Dos:
So, you see the Achilles Heel of "month math" at the end of long months, to wit: Adding "1 month" to January 29 (3 years out of four), 30, 31; March 31; May 31, August 31, and October 31, produce a rollover anomaly, vis.:
"February 29, 30, 31" = March 1, 2, 3;
"April 31" = May 1
"June 31" = July 1
"September 31" = October 1 (currently in force)
"November 31" = December 1
Not as simple as it seems at first.
---Schweiwikist (talk) 18:26, 31 August 2012 (UTC), aka 1 month before "September 31".

yes, so I noticed. However, using {{#time:...|{{#time:F Y}} +1 month}} }} instead of {{#time:...|+1 month}} }} seems to work in all cases as far as I can tell. I plan to bring this up at VPT. Frietjes (talk) 19:03, 31 August 2012 (UTC)

Not sure of compatibility

I am not sure of the collapsible option compatibility with Template:Mad Men episodes, Template:Homicide: Life on the Street episodes and Template:The Simpsons episodes.--TonyTheTiger (T/C/BIO/WP:CHICAGO/WP:FOUR) 07:35, 29 August 2012 (UTC)

and Template:NYRepresentatives.--TonyTheTiger (T/C/BIO/WP:CHICAGO/WP:FOUR) 07:36, 29 August 2012 (UTC)
all of those look fine. they use the first unnamed parameter "1" and the collapsible option uses "state" so there should be no conflict. Frietjes (talk) 14:32, 29 August 2012 (UTC)
Should there be further documentation on the order of parameter use?--TonyTheTiger (T/C/BIO/WP:CHICAGO/WP:FOUR) 16:17, 29 August 2012 (UTC)
the order doesn't matter check {{The Simpsons episodes|5|state=uncollapsed}} vs. {{The Simpsons episodes|state=uncollapsed|5}}. Frietjes (talk) 16:19, 29 August 2012 (UTC)
You make the call. If you don't think anyone will get confused by two instructions leave the documenation alone. I don't claim to understand these templates as well as you.--TonyTheTiger (T/C/BIO/WP:CHICAGO/WP:FOUR) 16:56, 29 August 2012 (UTC)
P.S. can you chime in on the Template:NYRepresentatives on your beliefs about relative load times. Isn't the newly reformated page calling a small fraction of the large template? Please help clarify this there if you are able.--TonyTheTiger (T/C/BIO/WP:CHICAGO/WP:FOUR) 16:58, 29 August 2012 (UTC)

Flag next to portal in Template:Region history

Check out some of my sub-pages, for some countries when use that template, there is no flag next to the portal (such as Template:History of Ivory Coast, Template:History of South Sudan). Could you fix this? ༆ (talk) 08:36, 29 August 2012 (UTC)

the problem with "South Sudan" is that there is no Portal:South Sudan (yet). so for that one, we should set "portal=no" until there is a portal. as for the other ones, it could be a problem with too many templates on one page? The first time I viewed it, the Ivory Cost one was missing, but the second time, it reappeared. try viewing the particular template on a separate page and see if the problem persists. Template:Inclusionist-cleanup

That template was created back in 2005 by Kmweber, who apparently intended to rubber stamp every AFD he could find with it. Kmweber was noted for his utter hatred of deletion and would disrupt hundreds of AFDs with something like "speedy keep, it exists, nothing else matters". Changes to underwater diving portal templates

Hi Frietjes, You have changed a large number of navboxes related to the underater diving portal citing wp:deviations. Unfortunately it is not clear to me what you mean. I read the reference and it is solid jargon, so while your actions might be reasonable and in good faith, this is not made clear to me by your cited reason. Could you please explain what look to me like rather arbitrary changes. How does the colour scheme chosen offend, is there any reasonable way it could be improved without resorting to a revert to default. There is a large variety of navbox colour scheme variations currently in use, are they all going to be changed? If not, what makes some acceptable and others not? Cheers, • • • Peter (Southwood) : 21:05, 4 September 2012 (UTC)

I have no problem with changing the way they look on the portal page, but see no reason to use anything other than the default in articles. changing them to an arbitrary color is in conflict with wp:deviations, and looks odd when the templates end up next to other templates which use a different scheme. it's better to just use the default. also this helps make sure we have sufficient contrast for wp:accessibility. they were all using the default until a couple days ago, and that seemed to be working fine. Frietjes (talk) 21:35, 4 September 2012 (UTC)
Are you saying that it is possible for a navbox to look different on different pages? If so, how is this done?
I repeat my question. Are all the other navboxes with non-default colour schemes going to be changed (because they conflict with wp:deviations)? If not, what makes them acceptable?
Is the colour scheme used in the non default version of the underwater diving navboxes in any way worse than the default, and if so, how? How are you judging the contrast of an alternate colour scheme?
I suggest that an accessible colour coding of navboxes at the bottom of an article improves recognition, and is therefore better than a large stack of identically coloured boxes connected to different projects and portals.
Looks odd in what way?
I agree they were all working fine in the default color scheme, but it appeared to me that they were also working fine with the alternative colour scheme. If you claim otherwise please clarify • • • Peter (Southwood) : 16:11, 6 September 2012 (UTC)
we should strive for consistency between articles, for a more uniform appearance. yes, colouring is being removed from many navigation templates when there is not substantial justification for the deviation. the colour contrast of the default is easier for me to read, as I can customize the amount of contrast using my own person css file (User:Frietjes/vector.css). this is the approach used by many visually impaired editors. Frietjes (talk) 18:32, 6 September 2012 (UTC)
if you would like to make it match the portal colours on the portal pages, then use something like this. I have no problem with this approach. Frietjes (talk) 18:28, 6 September 2012 (UTC)
That is a neat trick. I will apply it to the other navboxes as an interim solution.
Is this policy of striving for consistency between articles and a uniform appearance a Wikopedia policy? If so please direct me to where it is written, so I can avoid further difficulty.
I would also appreciate if you would answer the rest of my questions. I ask them in order to know the answers, so that I can distinguish between following consensual policy and arbitrary preferences. • • • Peter (Southwood) : 12:46, 7 September 2012 (UTC)
I have looked at your css settings. I am trying to understand the problem. I see that you appear to be able to set the colours of the navboxes to display on your browser as very pale blues, presumably with black lettering, so you don't actually see the default colours of the navboxes, which are as far as I can see lower contrast than the colours you objected to in the alternative diving navbox colour schemes. I deduce from this that it is either the green which is a problem, or possibly that your css is overridden by the background color settings of customized colour schemes, which would make them lower contrast than the default when modified by your css. However, I am guessing here, and it would be nice to know if I am on the right track. • • • Peter (Southwood) : 13:09, 7 September 2012 (UTC)
I took the default colouring and increased the contrast. if you say that's blue, then I will take your word for it, because I am visually impaired. I have no control over the contrast when the colours are not set by CSS. Frietjes (talk) 20:46, 10 September 2012 (UTC)

Why would you do this? --Joy (talk) 20:42, 10 September 2012 (UTC)

because it wasn't passing through the parameters, although this may have fixed most of the problems, but only if that's all the valid parameters. Frietjes (talk) 20:45, 10 September 2012 (UTC)
That's better. Perhaps we need a generic option in mediawiki that would allow all unrecognized parameters to pass through the transclusion... --Joy (talk) 23:20, 10 September 2012 (UTC)

Fictional Conference interpreters

Hello Frietjes,

I saw you came to visit my sandbox. I've worked a bit on the translation of the french page I created (well, I'm the main contributor so far).

Would you care to have a look? I'm not a native english speaker and the editing rules might be slightly different on en.wiki. I haven't seen all the films nor read all the books and I hope other people will fill in the gaps. As long as the main structure is ok.

I'll keep on translating what's left, just give me some time ;-)

Is there a way to indicate that the page is a translation from the french original?

As for the non-fiction bit, I'm not sure it's the right place, but there are a lot of interesting books in that section. Where should I put them?

Thanks a lot!

Finally

I have been looking whole day for somebody to help me with these, I am not good with wiki code, so can you help.. I have created Euroleague color template, almost same with NBA color, just with the Euroleague teams, but don't know how to integrate it in Infobox basketball biog. next to NBA color. If you know how, then there is another issue. How to Infobox recognise team in this form Partizan Belgrade, without creating team_link paramater, which I am by the way now adding to the Euroleague players... It will redirect to some other stuff if we just put Partizan Belgrade (this is just an example, many others team are better known differently than team's official name)... And, now can you help me...? Thanks AirWolf (talk) 23:43, 17 September 2012 (UTC)

I have forgot to say, I put these teams in NBA color just temporarily until someone fix that, then I will revert it since the Euroleague teams has nothing to do there..
Well done, you helped a LOT by deleting teams, wow, that is so professional and such a phenomenal contribution to this problem. By the way, thanks for asking what is happening, at least! Cheers! AirWolf (talk) 23:57, 17 September 2012 (UTC)
okay, the first issue is resolved, I think, in that it will call your Euroleague template only if the team is not found in the NBA color template. the issue with the team link parameter is a bit harder. Is there anything wrong with just using KK Partizan, this would seem to be the logical choice, since the link target would match the displayed name? Frietjes (talk) 00:00, 18 September 2012 (UTC)
The first issue is NOT resolved, check it out for Juan Carlos Navarro (basketball), does it work, no. I just gave you an example, there are and other teams with similar problems, but it's OK and if you just fix the first issue, I will add team_link to every player and everything is fine. AirWolf (talk) 00:04, 18 September 2012 (UTC)
try it now. Frietjes (talk) 00:14, 18 September 2012 (UTC)
That is my man, finally someone who know how it should be done. Thanks a lot man! Even it is probably very complex to change this for link, it is not a problem as I will add the missing parameter.. Any tips where to learn the basics of the wiki p.l.? Bye AirWolf (talk) 00:19, 18 September 2012 (UTC)
