Geography

The Philippine Islands is composed of 7,107 islands with a total land area of 300,000 km² in the tropical Southeast Asia. The islands are divided into three main island groups: Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao. The Luzon islands include Luzon, which is the largest island, Mindoro, and Palawan. The Visayas is a group of several small islands the largest of which are: Panay, Negros, Cebu, Bohol, Leyte, and Samar. The Mindanao islands include Mindanao, which is the second largest island, plus the Sulu Archipelago, composed of Basilan, Sulu, and Tawi-Tawi.
The Philippines enjoys a hot and humid tropical climate. Filipinos generally consider three seasons: Tag-init or Tag-araw (hot season / summer; March to May), Tag-ulan (rainy season; June to November), and Tag-lamig (cold season; December to February).
Most of the islands used to be covered in tropical rainforests, however, due to widespread illegal logging, much of the forest cover has been reduced to less than 10% of the total land area.
The islands are volcanic in origin, being in the Pacific Ring of Fire. Many volcanoes in the country are active, the most recent violent eruption being that of Mt. Pinatubo in 1991. The country is also astride the typhoon belt in the Western Pacific. It is regularly struck by at least 10 typhoons every year.
