The incident sparked widespread protests and dissent across the country. The six men accused were arrested in Delhi and Bihar. The accused were to be charged with an Attempt to murder. It was later announced that the victims condition was deteriorating. She was traveling with a male friend who was attacked and thrown out of the bus. On Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dixit's suggestion, five fast track courts were approved to try rape cases.
