2012 Delhi gang rape and murder

The 2012 Delhi bus rape case refers to the incident where a 23 year old physiotherapy student was gang raped in Delhi. The incident sparked widespread protests and dissent across the country. The six men accused were arrested in Delhi,Bihar and Rajasthan. The accused were to be charged with an Attempt to murder. It was later announced that the victims condition was deteriorating. She was traveling with a male friend who was attacked and thrown out of the bus. On Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dixit's suggestion, five fast track courts were approved to try rape cases.

Incident

On 20 decemeber 2012 a 23 year old girl was gang-raped in a private moving bus.The incident took place Sunday night.Girl and her male friend, who had boarded the chartered bus with tinted glass windows from Munirka in south Delhi around 9.45pm to Palam, after the two resisted before they were dumped on the road side near Mahipalpur flyover, police said on Sunday. Police said that around five to seven bus crew started misbehaving with the girl a few minutes after she boarded the bus, which was traveling without other passengers. The victim's boyfriend tried to prevent the men from molesting her, but the men beat him up with an iron rod and sexually assaulted the girl. Then she was allegedly raped and brutally assaulted,her male friend was also attacked and both of them thrown out of the vehicle.Accused driver arrested by police soon after.


Hospitalization of victim

Soon victim was rushed to safdurgang hospital in nearly dead condition.“It appears to be that a rod was inserted into her and it was pulled out with so much force that the act brought out her intestines... That is probably the only thing that explains such severe damage to her intestines,” said a doctor at Safdarjung Hospital where the woman is being treated. All of her intestine removed after operation. Doctors said she was still critical as they went fifth surgery.

Nationwide Protest

There was nationwide protest by women activists, ,bollywood actors, at rashtrapati bhavan,India Gate and all over India.Sushma Swaraj said that accused should be given capital punishment.
