Space music is a style of music often without conventional melodic, rhythmic, or vocal components, which can give the listener a sense of consciousness which can include floating, flying, and cruising. This multi-purpose music has been used in movie soundtracks, planetariums, to stimulate and explore the imagination, relaxation, the healing of mind and body, and more. This is accomplished by the creation of sonic textures and vast auditory landscapes which encourage the listener to explore.

Many would term this music, "background music". However, with such artists as Peter Baumann era Tangerine Dream, the recordings require active listening, and more than mere relaxation pieces. Space music recordings are often very intense and dissonant, with a close listening.

Sometimes associated as a sub-category of Ambient music, space music itself offers interpretations of other popular genres, among them: Electronic, Sacred/Choral, Piano, Trance, Celtic, Native American, World Fusion, and Arctic.
