C. Hopkins (1854-1952) was a Sinologist noted for his study of the Chinese language and his collection of oracle bones, although many of the bones he collected turned out to be forgeries, which were given to Cambridge University Library. He went to Beijing in 1874 as part of the consular service and retired to England by 1910. In 1898 he was British Consul at Chefoo. He was the brother of poet Gerard Manley Hopkins.
