    Wikidata

    Did I miss an announcement? I noticed that someone had removed WP:interwiki links from an article, and after a bit of research I found that Wikidata had gone live and that language links are now to be provided through that route. I am not sure whether the Wikidata database has been fully populated with data consistent with the current content of en-w, nor am I sure how any further changes to iw links on en-w would find their way into Wikidata before iw links are removed from en-w, nor whether checks are being done on the consistency of the data before the en-w iw links are removed. I assume that I'm not the only en-w editor who is not fully informed, so I would be grateful if anyone involved with the Wikidata project could give us a clue. - David Biddulph (talk) 03:05, 14 February 2013 (UTC)

    It would be best to check the item on Wikidata to make sure all the links are on Wikidata before removing. We have a lot of items there, but not all of them. --Rschen7754 03:09, 14 February 2013 (UTC)

    Wiki Page for IDFC Project Equity

    Hi ,

    I would like to communicate & request that the wiki page for IDFC Project Equity (link : IDFC Project Equity) should be removed , since the company has merged into IDFC Alternatives and is now called Infrastructure , which is an asset class of IDFC Alternatives .

    Hence the page is not relevant .

    You need to be more specific. What grammar are you looking for? We do have pages on specific grammar topics here, but if that doesn't help, I'd suggest you try dedicated websites like englishpage.com, onestopenglish.com etc. Valenciano (talk) 06:49, 14 February 2013 (UTC)

    When I preview a page with User:Toshio Yamaguchi/Template:File page NFCC concerns tag I can see that the page is placed in Category:Non-free files lacking a rationale as of February 2013, which is as intended. However, the template also should place the file in a category for all non-free files which lack a rationale (I specified the ambox parameter | all = Non-free files lacking a rationale).     Frustration

    I have been trying without success to edit material on the page on me Quintin Jardine. I am doing to because that page has been copied by Facebook and used to create a community page on me without my knowledge or permission, but also because some material on the Misplaced Pages entry constitutes a breach of privacy to me. Furthermore I note that the cited references on my Misplaced Pages page include my own website. I must point out that all material on that site is the copyright of Portador Ltd, my company and may not be used without its permission. I'm a big fan of Misplaced Pages, and a financial supporter, but my loyalty will be at an end if my most recent edit is not reinstated and the image attached removed.. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Qjardine (talkcontribs) 10:57, 14 February 2013 (UTC)

    Hi Quintin. I've taken a close look at the page in question, but haven't made any alterations to it. May I ask which parts you object to? As far as I can see (having made comparisons with several pages on your website) there is no reproduction of copyrighted text, and indeed, the website itself appears to verify most if not all of the biographical information. If you could give precise details of which parts of the article you object to, and why (either here or on my talkpage), I can see about having them removed, but at first glance, I don't immediately see anything that would cause a breach of privacy or a copyright violation. The image in the article is one that you yourself released under the GNU Free Document Licence, and therefore is free for anyone, including Misplaced Pages, to amend or use as they see fit.     • His objections are shown in this edit. Per WP:BLP, "Contentious material about living persons (or recently deceased) that is unsourced or poorly sourced – whether the material is negative, positive, neutral, or just questionable – should be removed immediately and without waiting for discussion." Qjardine removed unsourced information. The page then was subject to possible vandalism.     How do you add a picture to a Misplaced Pages page: There is a page: First Presbyterian Church (Sallisaw, Oklahoma). I wanted to add some historical information and a picture.     If you are in a position to release an image under a compatible license to Misplaced Pages/Wikimedia then you just need an WP:autoconfirmed account before you can upload it. If the image is already here then copy and paste this: ] and fill in the file name where you see "example" and also a caption. Good luck! ツ Jenova20 17:19, 14 February 2013 (UTC)

    fixing piped link of redirect?

    Let's say that Aeiou is an article and Bfjpv is a redirect to Aeiou. If I find an article that has ] in it, should that be edited to simply ]. Both links will end up at the article Aeiou and the second is shorter.Naraht (talk) 19:01, 14 February 2013 (UTC)

    It's often better to link to the redirect, except in navigation boxes. See WP:NOPIPE and WP:R#NOTBROKEN. PrimeHunter (talk) 19:11, 14 February 2013 (UTC)
    Like most things, the answer is "sometimes". In general, if one is just a synonym/capitalization/re-punctuation of the other, I edit the link as long as I'm doing something else to the article. If Bfjpv is a sub-subject within the Aeiou article, and it might some day have its own article, I leave the link as it is. An example might be if Bfjpv is the founder of company Aeiou, but has also recently been elected to public office, making him notable aside from his company. BTW, the same applies to redlinks. In the example just given, if Bfjpv doesn't exist at all, it should be left alone, as it's likely to be created in the future. —— 01:41, 15 February 2013 (UTC)

    Tagging information as "cite needed" instead of providing a citation

    In a discussion with a relatively new account at RSN (Misplaced Pages:Reliable sources/Noticeboard#Kition) the question of when to use a "citation needed" tag has come up. The other user has several times added a cite needed tag to their own edits when editing an article instead of an actual citation. See . I have asked them to stop and find adequate citations before adding information and explained that I didn't think the purpose of such a tag was to ask someone else to cite your additions for you. They think I am misinterpreting the purpose of the tag. I tried looking through some of the archives of the talkpages for wp:cite and wp:citation needed and the archives of this page, but nothing specifically popped out at me, although this has to have come up before.     I think your approach is the correct one. The onus is on the person adding material to ensure that it is adequately referenced - if they don't have references for it, it shouldn't be added (especially if it's a BLP, though that's not the case here). I always understood that the {{cn}} etc tags were to alert readers to possibly unreliable content and to alert those who may be so inclined, to look for references, not as a cop-out for the user adding the possible disputed material.--ukexpat (talk) 21:25, 14 February 2013 (UTC)

    Artist rendering of William Tennent

    From Wendy Wirsch President of the William Tennent House Association in regards to the painting of what is believed to be William Tennent and is on Misplaced Pages site which is the above banner. Wendy is the Historian for the Neshaminy Warwick Church.

    Are you referring to the painting of a man with white hair and a ruffle on his shirt? If so, that is not William Tennent. The reason I know this is because I know the woman who owns the painting. She is Anne Tennent Cecil. She lives in Spartanburg, SC. Anne had the painting examined by art experts. The portrait is that of a man who married into the Tennent family. We also know that the gentleman isn’t William Tennent because of the clothes he is wearing. Men in the 1730’s and ‘40’s didn’t wear shirts with ruffles on them. That image needs to be removed.

    How does one withdraw or request a tainted RfC be closed early?

    I posted a neutrally worded RfC and a hostile editor added a comment to a separate discussion to which I had been party saying that the discussion from that thread was continued at the RfC I filed, even though the matter was not discussed there. Four of the subsequent five opposes then mentioned the prior discussion the op linked to but which was not a subject of or mentioned at the RfC. How do I close the tainted RfC?     • Instructions on closing RfCs can be found at Misplaced Pages:RFC#Ending RfCs. If this is an RfC/U then you'll have to follow this instead. The issue of taint (forum shopping, meatpuppetry, or whatever your concern is) is probably best resolved by simply mentioning this concern in the RfC itself and then definitely seeking outside closure at WP:AN/RFC.     Requesting an article?

    So there's a page that says a person can suggest something be added to Misplaced Pages but the only link I can see is to create an article so I'll suggest it here.

    I think an article needs to be made about Dr. Carin Bondar who is a biologist in Canada that does incredible learning videos and articles. Some of her stuff can be found at www.carinbondar.com/

    The list in the article is from the AFI list, and AFI attributes the quote to Han Solo so that's what stays in the article. You can see the discussion on the article's talk page.     Edits do not trigger default edit summary

    You can create the section part of the edit summary on your own by entering "/* Section name */ this is what I did in the section". This is automatically filled in for you if you edit using a section link. If you create a new section at the end of the page using the "+section" link, you automatically get the edit summary "/* Section name */ new section". If you create a new section by editing the page an manually entering "== Section name ==", then this obviously doesn't work. You could be doing other things in addition, e.g. adding several new sections. The software doesn't inspect your changes to check if you just added a new section.     A heading made inside the edit box by typing or substituting is not transferred to the edit summary. But there should be a field with heading "Subject/headline" above the edit box when you click "New section". See for example File:Sandbox edit new section.PNG.     If you want a default summary, you'll need to remove the heading from your template and enter it manually into the section header. Alternatively, you can use the normal edit window or the section above and leave an edit summary. Finally, I think there's an option in your preferences which will autofill the edit summary with what you posted if you don't have one.     User talk page issues

    My computer has developed a strange issue with user talk pages. It starts to load the page and then it looks like it restarts and hangs with the progress bar at ~30%. If I refresh the page in the middle of this hangup, it does the same thing. If I try over an over (maybe 15-20 times in a row) then it seems to break its pattern and it works, but if I refresh the page again, it's back to the annoying hangup again for another 15-20 tries. I haven't been able to find any info on this weird problem online, and I know there are things I could try like reinstalling my browser, but I'm just curious about what is going on here. So I'm looking for help from people with a technical understanding of the page code for Misplaced Pages. What makes user talk pages any different from all other pages on Misplaced Pages?     I hadn't tried that before, but I've just gone through all the steps and it still seems to be causing the same problem. I'd imagine that would affect my ability to load up other pages too, though. This problem is definitely restricted to user talk pages and only at Misplaced Pages.     I didn't knowingly get any gadgets/scripts that are specific to user talk pages, but I do have greasemonkey and I pick up gadgets occasionally when I need them. I haven't ever gotten anything specific for Misplaced Pages, though, as far as I know. Interestingly it does seem to be connected to me being logged in, though.     The skin is shown at Special:Preferences#mw-prefsection-rendering. The default is Vector. What is your browser? Can you test what happens if you disable Javascript in the browser? Special:PrefixIndex/User:Thibbs/ shows no personal css or js files, except an empty monobook.js. Maybe you have a problematic gadget at Special:Preferences#mw-prefsection-gadgets.     My skin is Vector, and the gadgets I have turned on are:
    1. "Ask a question" feature
    2. Reference Tooltips
    3. Hotcat
    4. Form for filing disputes at the dispute resolution noticeboard
    5. CharInsert
    6. Add a "Sandbox" link to the personal toolbar area.
    As with the skin, this is just the default gadgets that presumably are ticked for anyone who doesn't go into the gadget area. I'm using Firefox 3.6.28 (can't get the most current version since this is the last one compatible with Mac OSX 10.4.11). Interestingly I find that turning Javascripting off does fix the problem. So that may be the best workaround for me for now.
    Another quirk I just realized is that this problem has really only come up for me when I'm trying to place a warning tag on a vandal's talk page. As I think about it, it's not just any user talk page that I have trouble with, it's particularly user talk pages of IP editors. If they have no talk page (i.e. it's redlinked) then I can create one with no problem, but if they have a bluelinked talk page then it seems to hang. -Thibbs (talk) 00:23, 16 February 2013 (UTC)

    I just tried disabling them each one at a time to see if I could identify a single one that was causing the problem, but no luck. Then I tried disabling them all in a single test and that still didn't work. I assume it's just because I'm using an outdated version of Firefox on this machine and that's causing the javascript to break. And actually with all of these various tests I've been running the problem seems to be marginally better. It only seems to be hanging around 50% of the time now.     Deprecated tags categories

    Categories such as Category:United States articles with deprecated tags, amongst others with the same task, track pages with deprecated tags. How are the pages added to said category? I'm thinking automatically, in which case I was wondering how it finds the pages with deprecated tags.     I've had a discussion today with another editor at this link with respect to standardizing Misplaced Pages usage as to how Elizabeth I is to be referred to in Misplaced Pages articles during the years 1536-1558. As I noted in my comments, almost every modern historian refers to her as 'Princess Elizabeth' during this period, as do very authoritative sources such as the Calendar of State Papers . Is there somewhere on Misplaced Pages where a discussion can take place and consensus can be reached on a topic such as this so that there isn't a discrepancy among the many Misplaced Pages articles which mention her, with some referring to her as 'Princess Elizabeth' and others as 'Lady Elizabeth'?     I, the other editor, noted in my comments that authors who have been knighted for their work on this matter (if we are going to use argumenta ad verecundiam) explicitly say that Elizabeth was no longer a princess after 1536 and that it was high treason to imply otherwise. The fact that she was not a princess anymore was of great significance, which is what the authors also explain in great detail. Anyway, I suggested a compromise - referring to Elizabeth simply as Elizabeth, which is plain, simple and accurate. However, this was flatly refused and no reason was given.     I'm hopeful someone at the Help Desk can indicate where on Misplaced Pages discussion of this topic can properly take place among a number of editors, and consensus can be reached as to the way Elizabeth I should be referred to during the period 1536-1558 in the many Misplaced Pages articles which mention her during that period, i.e. 'Princess Elizabeth', 'Lady Elizabeth', or just plain 'Elizabeth'. There needs to be consistency among Misplaced Pages articles so that readers aren't confused. I'm sure there must be someplace on Misplaced Pages where discussion takes place about the 'style' to be used when referring to royalty and members of the nobility. I'm just not sure where it is.     What makes you say it is currently proposed for deletion? A proposed deletion was declined last week after 16 minutes. I don't see anything since then. If you refer to User talk:Scientistssupporter#Proposed deletion of Tadahiko Mizuno then it's from the same declined proposal last week.     Did I do this move correctly?

    There was an article, The psychology of film. A student blanked the page, wrote some new notes, and then moved the article to Dual-route hypothesis to reading. I discovered this, restored the version that existed before blanking, but discovered that the move was not undone. I tried to undo the move, failed, and manually moved the article back to The psychology of film. Now Dual-route hypothesis to reading had got an automatic redirect to The psychology of film which I erased and replaced by a sentence. I also wiped out the redirect of the talk page. Now I know that moving pages can be a bit tricky, so my question is, is everything as it should be or are there things left to be fixed?     Hi there, I grew up in Newtwon CT. and after looking up the info written about Newtown on Misplaced Pages, I noticed under the "Notable people" section, that the list is missing Robert Cottingham (who happens to be my dad).

    There is a wikipedia page written for him which explains "He is considered to be one of most important original Photorealist painters." Robert Cottingam and my mom Jane Cottingahm have lived in Newtown Connecticut for over 35 yeas. They still live on the same property...Blackman Farm (founded in 1758). Some of the barns are converted into studios. Robert is still an active painter and is very much an influence in the art world today.

    To "de-orphan" an article all you need to do it to create incoming links from other pages. That is, you need to edit other pages and create a link from them to the orphan article. This link will show what articles are currently linked to Oryn the Rebel. As long as there is a minimum of one incoming link from another actual article, you can simply remove the "orphan" tag at the top.
    To establish notability is a bit more difficult. You'll need to provide multiple "reliable sources" that discuss him and include them in the article. Right now I see a New York Times link and that's a good start. You'll need more of these high quality sources to establish that the subject of the article is notable. The notability and orphan tags at the top of the page at Oryn the Rebel have important links inside them that can help you understand how to provide proper sources. -Thibbs (talk) 23:22, 16 February 2013 (UTC)

    Rigoletto#Instrumentation includes "banda", with a redlink to Banda (opera). I've just been looking for what is meant. "Banda" is Italian for

    I have started a draft article, Thnidu/Banda (opera), which so far is barely even a stub but does have one offhand reference. I would appreciate any elaboration, especially by someone who knows the territory.

    I have been looking for a more exact forum to post this in but without any success. List of musical ensemble formats looked promising but is minimal.

    Video in gallery

    2013 Russian meteor event includes a video in a gallery. Clicking on it causes it to run the video but their doesn't seem to be a way to get to the image page. Is there a way to add a link like the icon in the regular video thumbnail? Rmhermen (talk) 22:46, 16 February 2013 (UTC)

    It doesn't show a thumbnail from the actual video, though, just a generic thumbnail I chose for this. Also the citations only cover one of the three "Citation Needed" flags.     Thibbs, the tag is solely about the neutrality of some of the section's language, which is unrelated to the recently added cites. As I said in my prior comment, the editor did the correct thing by posting in the existing thread on the article's talk page.     I disagree that language choice was the central issue here. If you look at the original edit that placed the "Neutrality Disputed" notice, you'll see that the editor who placed this notice simultaneously tagged three separate lines as "citation needed". I think it's most likely that the editor who placed the "Neutrality Disputed" tag was equally concerned with the lack of citation for all three lines. Indeed this is reflected in the talk page post he made. At any rate finding citations for the two remaining "citation needed" claims or alternately removing the claims from the article would seem to cover the most likely root of the problem and couldn't hurt. -Thibbs (talk) 00:40, 17 February 2013 (UTC)

    I have a problem with your definition of Agnostic. I was seven years old when I accepted the definition as my belief. That was 45 years ago and at that time the definition I read and took to heart said that an agnostic was a person who BELEVED in a Higher power ( something higher than Human) but did not believe in or condone any organized religion. Later in life a Phd in theology explained to me that that was then in fact my religion, which I couldn't argue with but which doesn't change the fact that I self describe myself as "Agnostic" defining it as a person who believes in a higher power but not in organized religion. If Misplaced Pages doesn't define my belief structure as agnostic, then what would Misplaced Pages define it as?

    P.S. I believe Jesus could be defined as Agnostic if it weren't for the fact that he didn't believe in a higher power, he claimed to have personal knowledge of its existence.     Yes, published reliable sources are critical to Misplaced Pages. I have never seen a source which used your definition, and lots which use Misplaced Pages's definition, so I don't think you would get support for a change.     oddity in Special:Search

    When I do a search for "talk utc" in the Special:Search page with the default namespaces checked (including article) it returns nothing. However if I limit the search to only the article namespace, it does give me results. Why should reducing the namespaces increase the number of matches?     Noob Under Attack by an Old Pro

    I'm new to the game and I think I've spotted a problem with an article but each time I make a change or propose a change, "SlimVirgin" undoes it with either no explanation or an argument based on demonstrably incorrect information.

    For reasons I do not understand, "SlimVirgin" now seems to be accusing me of "harassment" and is threatening to contact the "admin".

    I don't know what I did to earn this seemingly hostile and irrational response.

    I'm willing to learn but I'm not being offered any explanations or assistance.

    The message from User:MadmanBot is a little confusing, but I think it's saying that you tried to recreate a deleted article without making changes to address the reason it was deleted in the first place. The article Bernard Andrew O'flynn was speedily deleted by User:Jimfbleak due to the criteria at Misplaced Pages:CSD#A7.     Thorp, you should fully educate yourself on Misplaced Pages's conflict of interest guidelines, which explain that "you should not create or edit articles about yourself, your family or your close friends". Therefore, you should not attempt to re-create an article about your great grandfather. Also, the guidelines instruct that if you are participating in an article in which you have a conflict of interest, you should disclose it on both your user page and the article's talk page.     Now, I'm not sure that's what happened. The message from the bot is confusing, so that was my guess. I see now that the bot left its message before the speedy delete happened, so I think I was wrong. It's still a little confusing as to why it says the one article was a copy of itself.     reference page numbers

    Yes, when you're on the edit page, choose a cite template and assign it a name in the "Ref name" field. If, for example you assign the name "Washington Post", then just insert <ref name="Washington Post"/> for all subsequent uses.     Problems searching multimedia

    I am trying to add pictures to an article and using the advanced search multimedia setting but no pictures come up and the message: "There were no results matching the query." appears. If I try refreshing the search, the pictures can come up some of the time. Could this be a poor internet connection?, too many people on Misplaced Pages to ask for pictures (be that pictures are a lot of data)?, or did one of my roommates somehow blacklist this computer?
