Sidebar with collapsible lists

Hello Frietjer, Can I ask you about the creation (edit) of sidebar with collapsible lists for the following Templates? (Template:Politics of Northern Cyprus, Template:Politics of Somaliland, Template:Politics of Transnistria, Template:Politics of Nagorno-Karabakh, Template:Politics of South Ossetia and Template:Politics of Abkhazia). These are in old form of. Thank You. Jan CZ (talk) 17:54, 28 December 2012 (UTC)

sure, I can help, but I would need to know how to divide it up into headings and lists under the headings. Frietjes (talk) 14:10, 31 December 2012 (UTC)
I have in mind the same editing style, as in the case of Template:Politics of the Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic, Your edit from 20.11. 20:38.2012. We need the one style for all politics templates (of states with limited recognition). Jan CZ (talk) 15:21, 31 December 2012 (UTC)
okay. I will have a look later. I don't have time right now. Frietjes (talk) 15:52, 31 December 2012 (UTC)
Clearly, no hurry. And, thank you very much. Jan CZ (talk) 16:11, 31 December 2012 (UTC)

Need a favor with template collapsing!

Hi, Frietjes i have been refered to you by TonyTheTiger to help me with the collapsible option in templates. TonyTheTiger contributed here making the navbox variable by adding collapsible options. I just need a favor with Template:Abu Bakr can you help make it variable too by adding collapsible options if you are similar with the technicality?? I mean to say can the individual heads like General Information, Family etc can they be made variable with collapsible options? i have worked on it but have not been successful. Hope to hear from you soon. -- Ibrahim ebi (talk) 18:06, 30 December 2012 (UTC)

okay, I changed it to use {{sidebar with collapsible lists}}. Frietjes (talk) 14:06, 31 December 2012 (UTC)
Thanks a lot for the help. Please do clear two things
1.Can this ({{sidebar with collapsible lists}}) be used if the list titles are Nested like in this case and
2.Is the list height alterable or is it constant??
Thanks again for the help. -- Ibrahim ebi (talk) 15:45, 31 December 2012 (UTC)
(1) yes, you can nest the template, but you have to be careful to avoid excess borders and padding. (2) yes, this can be altered either using the padding or setting a value for the "line-height" in the style. I will look at the other example later. I don't have time to do it right now. Frietjes (talk) 15:51, 31 December 2012 (UTC)
Thanks for the clues you have been a helping hand i will try it my self and if i face any difficulty i would definitely ask you.By the way Happy New Year. -- Ibrahim ebi (talk) 17:12, 31 December 2012 (UTC)

ISBN-10 and ISBN-13

Are {{ISBN-10}} and {{ISBN-13}} really needed? -- Magioladitis (talk) 22:32, 3 January 2013 (UTC)

In some cases, the two templates serve a need, providing a search facility for both isbns. In cases where the use of both represents article consensus, they should not be removed by an automaton or human editor. They should particularly not be removed when they were just inserted, by any editor carrying out some jihad against isbns. Kiefer.Wolfowitz 19:45, 6 February 2013 (UTC)
sorry, but show me where I removed an ISBN? on the other hand your revert broke citation 16. Frietjes (talk) 19:55, 6 February 2013 (UTC)
Apologies for my multiple misunderstandings, etc. Kiefer.Wolfowitz 22:05, 7 February 2013 (UTC)

changing references

Hi there. I noticed that you changed the citation in Bjørn Johansen (footballer)'s article from his playerhistory-profile to the transfermarkt-profile. What is the point of that, when his transfermarkt-profile supports nothing of the text written? Mentoz86 (talk) 15:51, 8 January 2013 (UTC)

you need to find a new source since {{playerhistory}} is being deleted. Frietjes (talk) 15:55, 8 January 2013 (UTC)
(edit conflict)I'm sorry, when looking further, his transfermarkt profile does list what clubs he played for (though the time of the transfers are incorrect), so I guess I was too fast on the trigger there. Again, I'm sorry, and keep up the good work replacing those playerhistory-templates. Mentoz86 (talk) 15:56, 8 January 2013 (UTC)
no problem. I stopped for now since I don't think transfermarkt is the best source either. I plan to use more official sources when possible. Frietjes (talk) 16:05, 8 January 2013 (UTC)
Those statistics-pages aren't really good, except for statistics (obviously). If you don't find another source, you might also replace <ref>{{playerhistory|###}}</ref> with something like <ref>{{cite web |url=http://www.playerhistory.com/player/### |title="Name" profile |publisher=playerhistory.com}}{{dead link}}</ref> and let someone else replace the dead link later. :) Mentoz86 (talk) 16:33, 8 January 2013 (UTC)

right now there is no |state= in that template, so passing a value for the "state" would do nothing. if someone adds |state=<nowiki</nowiki> to {{Volleyball national squad}} then we could pass a value through the templates using that template. but, until that happens, adding a value for |state= to the templates using {{Volleyball national squad}} would do nothing. these templates need to be categorised, and as a result, had no <noinclude>...</noinclude> section with categories. the best way to fix this would be to add categories in a noinclude section. however, I have added a line to the script so that it will append the missing noinclude section if it's not there. for those templates, the parameter "state" is not the collapsible state, but the name of the U.S. state. so, the {{collapsible option}} template does not make sense. in addition when that template calls {{navbox}}, it does not pass a value for |state=, so there is no way to control the collapsible state. My sandbox

Regarding this, the coordinates do need to be set to "inline, title" because, as my headings imply, these are infobox/article templates, and having to contend with one less replacement every time I perform an AWB run or create a new article is a big plus. If you can somehow <noinclude> the CAT:COORD for me, that would be great. GotR 04:53, 29 January 2013 (UTC)

Less than 150 left in Category:Infobox cricketer using deprecated parameters. Soon we can simplify the entire thing. -- Magioladitis (talk) 12:58, 2 February 2013 (UTC)

I added |living= and |partialdates=, since those are now obsolete as well. however, having there shouldn't be an issue, so I sorted them to a lower priority in the tracking category (the list at the end of the template should go from lowest to highest priority, since the last category sortkey will be the one that is used for sorting). I also simplified the transitional code so it still shows the information for the old parameters, but does not have the tortured logic to compute the age. since it's just transitional code, it shouldn't matter too much, but I wanted to make sure we weren't prematurely removing information from the infobox. also, edits sometimes get reverted, so we should keep the tracking in for some time after the parameters are removed from the infobox. Frietjes (talk) 17:08, 2 February 2013 (UTC)
Thanks. I removed all empty |living= and |partialdates=. We are again down to 100 pages. -- Magioladitis (talk) 17:17, 2 February 2013 (UTC)

Infobox embedding issues

Hey,

Regarding this: can you still reproduce? Tidy should be catching stuff like that before it hits the UA: I can confirm that I get served exactly the same source for both examples. Care to shed some light? Chris Cunningham (user:thumperward) (talk) 12:53, 6 February 2013 (UTC)

it's possible that the problem has been resolved, but I believe the issue was illustrated by the following three examples
Top level title
First subsection
Label 1.1Data 1.1
Second subsection
Label 2.1Data 2.1
Below text
Top level title
First subsection
Label 1.1Data 1.1
Second subsection
Label 2.1Data 2.1
Below text
Top level title
First subsection
Label 1.1Data 1.1
Second subsection
Label 2.1Data 2.1
Below text

notice that not all three generate the same markup for the section headings. in the first case you get a plain <th>section</th>, in the second case you get <th><b>section</b></th>, and in the third case you get a <td><b>section</b></td>. the second case is the "double bolding effect". someone else recently complained about double bolding for navbox titles. Frietjes (talk) 16:04, 6 February 2013 (UTC)
Ah, yes, I see it now. Hmmm, I wonder where those <b>...</b>s are coming from? Chris Cunningham (user:thumperward) (talk) 16:08, 6 February 2013 (UTC)
the bold tags are clearly coming from
{{#ifeq:{{{child|}}}|yes|{{#if:{{{title|}}}|'''{{{title}}}'''}}}}
, which was probably added to mimic a table heading (added here, which was the original edit that added embedding). Frietjes (talk) 16:14, 6 February 2013 (UTC)
Aha, cheers. I'll maybe ping Plastikspork for his thoughts. Chris Cunningham (user:thumperward) (talk) 16:37, 6 February 2013 (UTC)

A big small help

2009–10 Damash Gilan F.C. season has 140 unclosed tags, 2010–11 Damash Gilan F.C. season has 123 unclosed tags and Assyrian politics in Iraq has 152, which increases the rendering time. Can you please help? Do you know of any tools that we could use so in the future I don't ask your help for this kind of things? -- Magioladitis (talk) 12:57, 7 February 2013 (UTC)

I am guessing this is due to the unclosed center tags? I typically use a regular-expression search-replace tool to either close the tags or remove them. the problem is finding all of them, but I imagine there must be some HTML tidy plugin for the web browser that could help identify where they are in the text. Frietjes (talk) 15:06, 7 February 2013 (UTC)
The problem is both with center and small tags. I think the latter cause the main problem. -- Magioladitis (talk) 16:21, 7 February 2013 (UTC)
I could easily create a tool to close them, but usually the solution is something more elegant, like removing them or moving them to style statements for the entire table. Frietjes (talk) 16:23, 7 February 2013 (UTC)
You are the expert of this. Do your tricks and then I ll try to copy you. -- Magioladitis (talk)
if you look at what I did to the first table in this change, you can see that every single table cell is centered, so we can remove all the center tags and add "text-align:center" to the table heading. I also replace excessive table styling with a simple wikitable class. for the other tables, I removed the small tags since they were entirely unnecessary, and changed the default alignment to left, since there were flags in many of the table cells, which look better left-aligned. Frietjes (talk) 16:38, 7 February 2013 (UTC)
Thanks for your help once more. Can you please do the other two too? I'll try to create a list with a lot of unclosed tags and try to treat them similarly. -- Magioladitis (talk) 16:50, 7 February 2013 (UTC)
done. if you have a list, I can look through it when I have time. Frietjes (talk) 16:58, 7 February 2013 (UTC)
Great. I'll have a full list soon. -- Magioladitis (talk) 17:18, 7 February 2013 (UTC)

I originally declined this move of Mercedes AMG F1 W04, but now I see that User:Prisonermonkeys is the only editor opposing the move on the talk page. So it is moved. List of PlayStation games

Hello. Sorry to bother you, but I see you recently edited List of PlayStation games to fix a ParserFunction time error. I just tried to do the same (for item: Skeleton Warrior) but kept getting an error page when I saved. (I think it was because it was taking too long to upload.) I see two of my edits went through, the size looks ok, and it's no longer in Category:Pages_with_parser_function_time_errors, but I thought I should ask someone who can reliably edit the thing to make sure I didn't screw something up. :/ Thanks. PC-XT (talk) 08:36, 8 February 2013 (UTC)

it looks like you did it correctly. the article is really straining the servers right now. when articles get very large, you get an error when you save them, even though the edit goes through. the real solution here is to split the article, but that would take some time and some discussion on how best to do it. Frietjes (talk) 20:25, 8 February 2013 (UTC)
If I can help, I'll be glad to after I sort out WP:KIS. PC-XT (talk) 02:30, 13 February 2013 (UTC)

Re: 3RR

I'm sorry for editwarrin' and I promise won't do it again. What I ain't understand's why the users Oknazevad and STATicVerseatide didn't receive a warning like me coz they're editwarring w/ me. Oknazevad revert'd not only me but 3 other users and he call'd me a stupid on a summary 2. I though this ain't a correct way to do things here and's complete unnecessary. On the template talk me and other 2 users agreed to add the titles. Only him voted against it but he's minority. Can u tell me how things're workin' here just for some few users? AARDJ (talk) 12:16, 8 February 2013 (UTC)

your best option is to discuss edits on the talk page if they are reverted. repeatedly making the same edit without starting a discussion is a bad idea. if other editors don't engage in the discussion, you can always ask for an administrator to intervene. Frietjes (talk) 20:26, 8 February 2013 (UTC)
I think u didn't get it. There's a discussion on the talk page. Me and 2 other users agreed w/ the edits and just one disagreed but these 2 users kept revertin' back. And u didn't answer me about not warn'd'em just me. And why do u let 1 o' them call me a stupid? This ain't right. AARDJ (talk) 11:59, 14 February 2013 (UTC)
You still didn't answer me. I'm waitin' here. AARDJ (talk) 14:01, 18 February 2013 (UTC)
looking at the edit history, you have two or three editors reverting your edits, which is not a good place to be if you don't want to be blocked for edit warring. I would suggest continuing the discussion on the talk page, and at Misplaced Pages talk:WikiProject Professional wrestling as well. be patient. Frietjes (talk) 15:55, 18 February 2013 (UTC)

HTML tables to wikitables

I don't if you could help in converting HTML tables into wikitables. CHECKWIKI error 31 provides a huge list of pages with HTML tables: https://toolserver.org/~sk/cgi-bin/checkwiki/checkwiki.cgi?project=enwiki&view=only&id=31 (7,000 pages!) -- Magioladitis (talk) 20:53, 9 February 2013 (UTC)

You might be interested in Misplaced Pages:AutoEd/tablestowikitext.js. It's not perfect, but it does a reasonable job of converting HTML tables to wikitables. The main thing to watch out for is when the table is being passed to a template. Other issues include if the table is indented, or wrapped in a center tag. That said, it saves quite a bit of time if you are converting one. Thanks! Plastikspork ―Œ 00:37, 10 February 2013 (UTC)
Just a reminder that you should always check the output to make sure it looks acceptable before saving to avoid bugs like this one. I will try to fix those bugs, but there are still bugs in the code. Thanks! Plastikspork ―Œ 00:59, 10 February 2013 (UTC)
Thanks. I am still in the experimental phase of AutoEd. I got excited when I discovered what your tool does! Please help by fixing some of the pages. :) -- 01:23, 10 February 2013 (UTC)
looks useful, I will see if I can interface it with my other scripts. thank you. Frietjes (talk) 16:28, 10 February 2013 (UTC)

TY

Hi Frietjes, I just wanted to drop a note to say thank you for alerting me to my mistake. (and in a very nice way too. :)). I did reply on my talk, took a shot at fixing the RfA, and dropped a note for PS to make sure I restored his original intent. If you see anything out of order, you are most welcome to fix my mistakes or notify me at any time. Thanks again. — Ched :  ?  17:02, 11 February 2013 (UTC)

Template:2015 AFC Asian Cup edit

Hi, I just wanted to know why you removed the background and font colour from Template:2015 AFC Asian Cup. I see no reason to remove it and would like to revert your changes. --2nyte (talk) 03:43, 13 February 2013 (UTC)

mostly per wp:deviations, we already have a rainbow at the bottom of the page from all the national team colours, so I don't see a reason to add more. also, most of the AFC Asian Cup templates don't have any colouring, so we should just keep them all the same. thank you. Frietjes (talk) 15:19, 13 February 2013 (UTC)
Sorry for the late response, but to your reply WP:Deviations simply states to have a color contrast between backgrounds and fonts which the template did do, and you say "most of the AFC Asian Cup templates don't have any colouring", well, most FIFA Word Cup don't have any colour but Template:2014 FIFA World Cup does. I personally find no real reason to remove any colouring from templates, unless it reduces the accessibility of Misplaced Pages. And as Misplaced Pages does not have any guidelines to govern colouring of templates as per WP:DEW again I ask to revert your changes. --2nyte (talk) 16:00, 16 February 2013 (UTC)
In addition to what I just wrote, it is generally recommended by Misplaced Pages not to use colouring in "dated" templates. That is probably why Template:2014 FIFA World Cup utilises colouring; it is a major world-wide event, which will receive much attention and draw to its wiki related pages. That also can be said regarding Template:2015 AFC Asian Cup. --2nyte (talk) 16:07, 16 February 2013 (UTC)
the colouring should be removed from Template:2014 FIFA World Cup since none of the other world cup templates are using colouring. the wp:deviations guidelines are not just about contrast, but about presenting a unified appearance that can be easily modified by changing css files. the guidelines discourage the use of inline style statements like "titlestyle" and "basestyle" and encourage the use of "titleclass" and "baseclass", which are both set by {{navbox}}. there is no compelling reason to override the defaults. Thanks for fixing the Fighting Fantasy infoboxes. Richard75 (talk) 16:40, 13 February 2013 (UTC)

no problem. it was a pretty easy fix since I was the one who converted them to {{infobox book}} last year. Frietjes (talk) 16:42, 13 February 2013 (UTC)

Navbox formatting

Frietjes, greetings. I've been meaning to drop you a line for a few weeks about navboxes. I've noticed a number of your edits to navbox templates that have removed the deprecated <font> tag and replaced it with the <span> tag via Template:Color. An unfortunate effect of this change is to remove custom coloring from the underlining in the navbox title and make it the standard wikilink blue. This often looks rather bad against the background of a custom colored title box. Is there a way to custom color the underlining using up-to-date code? Thanks, Jweiss11 (talk) 20:49, 15 February 2013 (UTC)

I would suggest asking at either WP:VPT or MediaWiki talk:Common.css, since there may be a global solution. if I recall correctly, the effect that you are seeing with the hover underline color can only be reliably changed by changing the attributes for the "a" tag in css. one simple solution is to remove the underlining completely, but there are almost certainly problems with that. checking this thread, it looks like they are suggesting "faking it" using a border. the broader issue is that coloring the links something other than the default is somewhat in conflict with Help:link color which says you shouldn't do that. Frietjes (talk) 21:42, 15 February 2013 (UTC)
as a follow-up, it appears the coloring of the underline text is completely browser-dependent. when I look at the following table,
Without using <font color="yellow"> With using <font color="yellow">
WP:VPT WP:VPT
the underline text is the same color in both cases. I am using FF on Linux. Frietjes (talk) 21:53, 15 February 2013 (UTC)
Thanks for the quick reply. I'll follow up on those suggestions. Yep, I had a feeling this might be browser dependent. Viewed in Google Chrome, which is my go-to, there's a difference in color. All the best, Jweiss11 (talk) 21:57, 15 February 2013 (UTC)

Infobox Neath Port Talbot electoral ward

Could you replace this template and Infobox swansea electoral ward as you originally suggested? It's fine if you want to use two infoboxes. If someone doesn't like it, then that person can always try to merge them. Let me know if you need any help. Thanks! Plastikspork ―Œ 06:51, 17 February 2013 (UTC)

okay, can do that, but probably not today. Frietjes (talk) 20:02, 17 February 2013 (UTC)

Can you help explain...

Hi, i have just added collapsible options to a template Template:Hadith by nesting but there is a minor error and that is an additional space that appears at the bottom of the head as one opens the list item Collections the top space is perfect but there is an additional space that appears at the bottom of the further division of list item Sunni, Shi'a, Ibadi, Mu'tazila. Can you spot the problem that makes this space appears? and kindly remove this space as it looks odd. Thanks in advance. --Ibrahim ebi (talk) 18:13, 17 February 2013 (UTC)

fixed the problem. Frietjes (talk) 20:02, 17 February 2013 (UTC)
Thanks a lot. --Ibrahim ebi (talk) 15:01, 18 February 2013 (UTC)
Bothering once again can you reduce the left and right padding of the list of internal content of collection that is the list items Sunni, Shi'a, Ibadi, Mu'tazila so that they appear to be content of collection currently they appear to look odd as they have the same padding to that of "collection head", like they were in the previous version here. I am sure you get what i meant to say. Thanks. --Ibrahim ebi (talk) 15:48, 18 February 2013 (UTC)
is it the spacing on the left and right of the content or the headings? in my browser the headings are all evenly aligned, with the same amount of spacing above and below, and on the left and right. it's hard to see if there is a difference in padding on the content sections, since there isn't a uniform visual cue like there is with the headings. Just a big "Thank you!" for fixing the wraparaound problems on the Template:Cnservatism sidebar. Now I can expand it more happily on the political-philosophy article I've been working on for months. - Babel41 (talk) 20:40, 18 February 2013 (UTC)
