He is seen as a rising star in Dutch football, having scored 33 goals in his first full season in the Eredivisie.
Ajax paid €9 million for the striker, which some see as too much for a player so young. Having scored 40 goals in total in the 2005-06 season, he is expected to finish in fourth place in the European Golden Boot. The Dutch trainer Marco van Basten named 2 strikers in his 2006 FIFA World Cup squad, Ruud van Nistelrooij and Jan Vennegoor of Hesselink, who is a pinchhitter. Van Basten said that he was sorry for Huntelaar but that he would get a new chance in a few years and that he could play in the EC in Portugal under 21
