Putnam County Courthouse

The Putnam County Courthouse in Carmel, New York

The Putnam County Courthouse is located on Gleneida Avenue in Carmel, New York, and is historic for several reasons. It was built in 1814 and the jail was added in 1855. There was one hanging in 1844 and it is today the second oldest working courthouse in New York State. Putnam County has plans in the works to construct a new courthouse, but the existing courthouse must be recognized for its historical significance. The structure is almost two hundred years old and is a sight to behold. The four main pillars represent classic architecture that is no longer used in modern construction. It is hoped that the building will be retained for sentimental value even after the new courthouse is constructed.

Carmel High School

Carmel High School

Constructed in 1929, Carmel High School is located on Fair Street across the street from the post office in the heart of town. It is a stone's throw from both the County Courthouse and the County Jail. Carmel High School has had great sports rivalries with both Brewster High School and Mahopac High School.
