The |appeal=
parameter specifies whether the blocking Oversighter has directed the block to be appealed publicly, on the talk page, or privately, to ArbCom:
- Using

(default) makes the template say:
- "review the guide to appealing blocks, and then email the Arbitration Committee at arbcom-enwikimedia.org"
- Using
|appeal=public
makes the template say:
- "review the guide to appealing blocks, and then appeal your block by adding the following text below this notice:
