Mahato (Template:Lang-bn)is a surname mostly used by the "Kurmi" caste people of Jharkhand and West Bengal. The Kurmi's are mostly agriculturalists with landed properties, with very few landless agricultural labourers among them. The governments of India and West Bengal both have classified the Kurmis under Other Backward Classes since 1994.The surname "Mahato" is used by some other castes. eg-Koeri (Jharkhand, Bihar), Nunia (Bihar, West Bengal), Bedia (West Bengal), Bhumij (West Bengal).

Religion

The Mahato's (Kurmi's of Chotanagpure area) are hindus and nature worshippers. They are worshippers of Shiva,kali and nautre godess mansa. During the worship of Shiva, they sacrifice goats.

Topology

they are mainly found in the region of the chotanagpur region , manbhum, giridih, dhanbad, bokaro and on the borders of jharkhand and west bengal. they mainly put titles like mahato, ohhadar, chaudhary after their name.
