Invitation to join Wikiproject Conflict Resolution
Misplaced Pages:WikiProject Conflict Resolution.--Amadscientist (talk) 08:52, 13 March 2013 (UTC)
- Would Misplaced Pages:WikiProject Dispute Resolution accomplish the same sorts of things that this new project? If it does different stuff I'm all for it, otherwise it may be doubling up? (I haven't been on wiki much lately, spending time with family after my fellowship but I'll be back in full swing soon) Steven Zhang 09:04, 13 March 2013 (UTC)
- No. In fact, the purpose of this project is to pick up where the DR project leaves off. Mainly with editor conflict and conduct. This is not a civility enforcement taskgroup. We are not attempting to make people act nice to each other or take on issues of simple name calling and incivility. Our goal is to provide tools and venues where editors can help mediate over conflicts that may not even be over content with the goal of improving the quality of experiance for everyone.--Amadscientist (talk) 06:26, 14 March 2013 (UTC)
- Have fun with your family.--Amadscientist (talk) 06:26, 14 March 2013 (UTC)
- By the way. It has been suggested that I should be using your research and following your route. I actually am. Not sure why that would even be a question or concern or even required, but I have been looking at all your work as the basis for what I am doing. I want to be clear to you about this, as I truly respect all that you have done in this area. This is not about replacing anything you have achieved. It is about continuing your ideas into an area needing much attention. Disputes arise and then they go, but conflict seems to remain. Conflict is a different animal than a dispute. Conflict can happen without content and even then can last beyond a resolution regardless if the editors agree to a compromise.--Amadscientist (talk) 20:29, 14 March 2013 (UTC)

Help needed
Can you supply some input at Misplaced Pages talk:WikiProject Conflict Resolution? Particularly on the question: Was the intention of the DR project to include conduct disputes as well as content disputes? Thanks. --Noleander (talk) 15:07, 14 March 2013 (UTC)
Google hangout discussion off Wiki
I do have time, but need to do some looking into the whole setup and if I am able to do it with one of my video cameras. Not sure if they can live stream. E-mail me and I will get back to you privately.--Amadscientist (talk) 08:08, 15 March 2013 (UTC)
- I just added you to my Google plus circle. This looks like a possibility.--Amadscientist (talk) 08:13, 15 March 2013 (UTC)
- I tell you what. If you want to have an open, honest discussion in real time....is it really best to go against consensus over a good faith creation of a guide? If this is a reaction to a perception that I have disrespected you and your efforts I apologize as that is NOT the intention. I have so respected all the effort you have put into this project but if you wish to just ignore the fact that there has yet to be a consensus to merge I just don't know how to react here. I am going to set up the camera etc. if possible but that was just not something I can call a good faith attempt to collaborate. If you feel that it is best to merge the guide why don't you add your voice to the current discussion> There is already one volunteer that wants to merge or delete the whole thing. Surely we still work within a consensus based decision making collaboration and can come to a quality resolution without taking matters into our own hands. Bold editing is acceptable but I don't think bold deletion is. Please forgive my tone if this comes across as curt, but I am a little shocked that you are requesting face time and then do that. --Amadscientist (talk) 10:28, 15 March 2013 (UTC)
- For what it's worth, I found the guide you created to be more substantial than the original one so I replaced the original guide with the one you created and added a few things from the original. But fair enough. I've saved my changes to the volunteering page and reverted back to how it was, and reverted your guide to the version before I made any edits to it. I do think it best to consolidate the guides together (otherwise we are confusing our volunteers rather than aiding them) but this is a discussion we can have on the DRN page. (My version of the volunteer guide is here, fwiw). I did not mean to come across as rude, however. I hadn't read the discussion in length and thought it'd be something that wouldn't be opposed to. Be careful with those offline video chats with Steve, Amad. He'll entice you into the cabal heh, heh, heh ... TransporterMan (TALK) 13:19, 15 March 2013 (UTC)
- Sssh you! Heh. (For what it's worth, we should probably do a chat at some stage, considering I've had a Wikibreak for almost two months and want to get back into the swing of things). Steven Zhang 13:21, 15 March 2013 (UTC)
- I found everything to plug in the camera and power it with a plug so it doesn't shut off after 3 minutes of continued use off the battery. I uploaded the apps and tested. Not quite sure everything is one hundred percent as I can't tell if there is sound or not and if I am going to need to use an external mic. But I saw a moving pic even though my camera doesn't show anything in its screen....and saw my messy house and shut it off. LOL!--Amadscientist (talk) 21:22, 16 March 2013 (UTC)
- So I take it you are ready? Steven Zhang 21:23, 16 March 2013 (UTC)
- I don't know if I have sound. I am not sure how to start a hangout myself yet and I don't know how to make it or limit my stream as private.--Amadscientist (talk) 21:25, 16 March 2013 (UTC)
- Alright, we can test it and find out. I'll initiate a hangout on my end, you should receive a notification via email. Steven Zhang 21:27, 16 March 2013 (UTC)
- I appear to be looking at a meeting of some sort.--Amadscientist (talk) 21:31, 16 March 2013 (UTC)
- Can't see you in the hangout. Try going here and type in my name to start a hangout with me. Steven Zhang 21:34, 16 March 2013 (UTC)
- OK, bad timing I guess. I had to shut off when my partner came home to protect his privacy. Will try again in a bit.--Amadscientist (talk) 21:39, 16 March 2013 (UTC)

- I wanted to ask a question about your hangout request. Could you clarify if you are requesting a one on one or is this to be a hangout with the full Australian Wikimedia organization as I saw in the initial attempt?--Amadscientist (talk) 23:09, 20 March 2013 (UTC)
- No, I'm not sure how that happened. I must have been in a committee meeting that day. It'd just be you and me. Steven Zhang 09:38, 21 March 2013 (UTC)
- OK, I still need to get this to work. My camera does not have sound hooked up but I do have a separate microphone. A friend of mine is going to help me figure this all out, but it is better to hold off for a bit until I ma not as...concerned about Noleander and what I feel to be confrontational and obtuse tactics. I don't want that to unfairly effect my view on you, and I need time let a few loose ends to tie up.--Amadscientist (talk) 08:43, 29 March 2013 (UTC)

Note
Hi Steven - I just wanted to drop a line to say I'm glad to see you've taken on board some of the suggestions made in light of some speed bumps at WP:DRN. As I said in October we all want to see this board work. However, I think Rschen's MFD should have been let run its course. Not because I want to see DRN deleted (it wouldn't have been and I wouldn't have !voted for deletion either), but because IMHO the board needs community discussion & perhaps community oversight (just like every other board does).
WP:DRN cannot afford to have another instance of over-reaching by a volunteer. With that in mind I'd suggest that DRN would be well advised to reconsider how it excludes ppl - it's a VERY bad idea to give random but well intentioned users the impression that they can forcibly exclude others (this power, in fact, conflicts with site policy). *IF* it becomes necessary to exclude someone from a discussion at least get an uninvolved sysop to do so - their understanding of policy has been vetted by the community & they are accountable for their actions. DRN volunteers who take positions on content cannot then be seen as neutral uninvolved arbiters of discussion, once they comment on content they become new participants in a debate/discussion, they cannot then decide who should or should not participate in that discussion. Perhaps DRN does indeed require clerks, or at least two types of volunteers - those who are willing to get involved with content and those willing to stay outside and remain uninvolved.
In the interests of fairness we all need outsiders to moderate discussions - that doesn't mean we always need an admin - WP:NAC gives good guidelines when a non-admin closure at XFD is appropriate, perhaps this could be used as a model for when DRN needs a sysop to step in and the best practice for non-admin moderation of discussions.
Anyway good luck with the reforms, DRN is a good idea and its only natural that it hits a few speed bumps - as James Joyce said: "Mistakes are the portals of discovery."--Cailil 15:29, 1 April 2013 (UTC)

Notification
Hello, this is just a courtesy notification that your name came up in an AE thread. Nothing huge about you, but figured you might want to know. The Blade of the Northern Lights (話して下さい) 23:58, 5 April 2013 (UTC)
- Actually, this AE appeal may involve you on more than a "nothing huge" level, since TBotNL is defending his indefinite topic ban of Rumiton in part by citing discussions he said he had with you. If you could come over to the AE request page and let us hear your own views directly, I think it would be helpful to us. Thanks. — Richwales (no relation to Jimbo) 04:19, 6 April 2013 (UTC)
Project for RfA nominators
Hi -- I notice you've been active in nominating at RfA over the past year, and would like to invite you to join the WikiProject for Nominators, which aims to support editors interested in nominating there. We'd be glad of your expertise in getting this new project off the ground. Apologies for the talk-page spamming if you've already seen this message a dozen times.
