Image copyright problem with Image:Soccerball.gif

Thanks for uploading Image:Soccerball.gif. However, the image may soon be deleted unless we can determine the copyright holder and copyright status. The Wikimedia Foundation is very careful about the images included in Misplaced Pages because of copyright law (see Misplaced Pages's Copyright policy).

The copyright holder is usually the creator, the creator's employer, or the last person who was transferred ownership rights. Copyright information on images is signified using copyright templates. The three basic license types on Misplaced Pages are open content, public domain, and fair use. Find the appropriate template in Misplaced Pages:Image copyright tags and place it on the image page like this: {{TemplateName}}.

Please signify the copyright information on any other images you have uploaded or will upload. Remember that images without this important information can be deleted by an administrator. If you have any questions, feel free to contact me, or ask them at the Image legality questions page. Thank you. Shyam 13:42, 2 April 2006 (UTC)

Community Portal

This redesign is a bad idea. I agree with your earlier posts that each page (Main page, Community Portal, Help) needs its own feel so people don't get confused. On the other hand, there needs to be consistency (and having some will get you a lot more support when you need it). My epiphany: use the three colors from the Main Page on the Community Portal, but use the current layout. I got the idea because we're already using two of the colors. I like the dark colors, but we can use their light versions, too. Anyway, get the "Misplaced Pages by Department" section using those colors. We can use a white background, or leave something like that tan in place. But, since his is going to be colorful 9and is already), why stick with monochromatic images for the menu? I have found good images and put them into this sandbox. Do you like them? Feel free to change them if you find something better.--HereToHelp 14:55, 2 April 2006 (UTC)

I previewed it with the lighter colors and on the tan they looked awful. But the blue, green, and purple the surround the titles on the Main Page look fine.--HereToHelp 22:03, 2 April 2006 (UTC)

RFA Thanks

Hi Go for it! Thank you for your support vote on my RFA. The final result was a successful request based on 111 support and 1 oppose. You know where to find me if you need anything. --CBDunkerson 15:03, 3 April 2006 (UTC)

Community Portal

Please stop de-emphasizing the project/collaborative aspect of the Community Portal redesign. A discussion of the various drafts, their pros/cons, etc. is useful towards selecting the best aspects of each, and integrating them into one draft. A vote is premature, and decisive. I do like some aspects of your draft (but just disagreed strongly with the process you were using). But, I also like the compact format used by Commons, and perhaps use of similar colors or design elements as the main page. Your approach, with making this a vote on the drafts as a whole, does not allow this type of discussion to occur. -Kmf164 (talk | contribs) 17:10, 3 April 2006 (UTC)

The version I was working on was the Community Portal. And like all other pages, it was and still is open to discussion. But it is always appropriate to take a poll, which anyone can do, to find out what the Community wants. I merely want to find out how many users like each design approach, and polls/surveys are an important part of the consensus building process (I just looked it up). --Go for it! 17:22, 3 April 2006 (UTC)

You are right that a poll is a good step towards consensus buiding. In this case, however, a poll is premature. The Project was just set-up in this format, and officially has just one member. (don't forget to sign your name under participants). Maybe in a week or two, a poll would be okay. Or a poll on specific aspects (e.g. certain content or design elements). But, we can use more discussion first and try to find consensus that way first. -Kmf164 (talk | contribs) 17:28, 3 April 2006 (UTC)
A poll is not premature. You were apparently trying to steer the entire direction of the design effort. It is better to have it out in the open where eveyone can get involved rather than to have a small group determine the direction in a dark secluded corner. And since you were about to make an important decision that affects everyone, I thought everyone should be invited to participate. That's what consensus-building is all about. --Go for it! 17:34, 3 April 2006 (UTC)
That's not the case. There has been significant participation in both drafts, by more than just myself. I still don't understand why you blanked the project page and replaced it with the poll. I assume good faith there. But, by making it just a poll and not a collaborative project isn't helpful and inclusive. A poll forces people to choose, whereas from the recent discussions I see that people have much more varied opinions. -Kmf164 (talk | contribs) 17:43, 3 April 2006 (UTC)
The community portal, which was open to editing, was reverted and blocked, even though there were at least 2 people working on it. The furthest developed version should be the one currently displayed while a redesign takes place. That's why I'm calling for a decision, and I have every right to do so. Let's see what the overall readership wants. --Go for it! 17:50, 3 April 2006 (UTC)

Talk page spamming

Please stop spamming user talk pages. -Kmf164 (talk | contribs) 18:57, 3 April 2006 (UTC)

I'm merely posting the notice to those I believe will appreciate it. I am not randomly posting the notice. And therefore, it isn't spam. I'll rewrite each notice from scratch to individualize it for each person if I have to. --Go for it! 19:00, 3 April 2006 (UTC)

It seems to be a select group of users. Others that have been involved in discussions on Misplaced Pages talk:Community Portal. Those that might also be interested include User:Talrias, User:Barberio, User:J3ff, User:Snailwalker, User:Quiddity, User:Davidpk212, User:RJHall and others. However, I don't advocate "cross-posting of messages to a large number of user talk pages" to promote a vote. -Kmf164 (talk | contribs) 19:08, 3 April 2006 (UTC)
It only seemed select, because you intervened after I barely got started. But because you'd rather me not post blatant notices, I shall change my tact, and will instead ask for advice from those whose counsel I respect (you included) -- thanks for the advice on cross-posting the notice. --Go for it! 19:13, 3 April 2006 (UTC)
Thank you. As a member of Misplaced Pages:WikiProject Spam, I personally find such mass messages on my talk page annoying (even when they come from established users such as yourself). I assume good faith with you, but nonetheless such messages only remind me of those politician campaigning outside of subway stations. -Kmf164 (talk | contribs) 19:25, 3 April 2006 (UTC)

Why my stress-o-meter is about to explode...

I spent months working on the community portal, including creating/installing the Community Bulletin Board, and based on the heavy use the CBB gets, I was under the impression that most people liked the page. Unfortunately, the way the talk page system is set up, it seems like only people with complaints and gripes visit those, so all I seemed to get was negative feedback, on various points and then recently to the design effort itself. I did everything I could to accomodate the specific points (except for a select couple that I really liked). But then people started complaining about the page being changed at all - and it was supposedly an open page! Then somebody comes along and reverts the page to a version that existed months ago, including getting rid of the community bulletin board, soon followed by an admin who locks the page. Luckily another bold admin restored the CBB, but *sigh*, not the rest of the page. So... I called for a vote to get the page changed back! And finally, some encouragement shows up in the form of support votes. Is this what we have to do to avoid the Wikiblues around here? --Go for it! 20:01, 3 April 2006 (UTC)

To avoid the wikiblues, you could pay attention and take into account, all the advice and criticisms that have been directed at you. But instead you're ignoring it all. If you don't change your actions, the REactions will continue to be the same. --Quiddity 21:52, 3 April 2006 (UTC)
I think I'll stick to polling. The talk page system has an inherent bias toward criticism and complaints. --Go for it! 22:04, 3 April 2006 (UTC)

Help

Hi, what can we help you with? --pgk 20:26, 3 April 2006 (UTC)

Ok that's a difficult question and really way beyond what the {{helpme}} system is for. Really if you think an issue may be broadly important to the community as a whole you could try posting something about the existance of ongoing discussion on the village pump to possibly draw some other editors in, though of course this could draw in those who disagree with your stance. --pgk 20:42, 3 April 2006 (UTC)

Re: I need your advice

Hi, it's been awhile since we've talked. I'm in need of the advice of a veteran user on something I've been working on for quite some time. I undertook a complete overhaul of the Community Portal, only to have someone revert it to a version of the page that existed months ago. Then along comes an admin and protects the page. Not knowing what all my options were, I called for a vote to get the page changed back. My question is: is there anything I've overlooked in my efforts to get the page restored? --Go for it! 19:21, 3 April 2006 (UTC)

After a quick look at the situation, it looks like to me that the issue that caused the protection was the constant design changes to an important page (it's the second link on the sidebar on Monobook). Both the admin's comment at the protection log and the reverting edit (which was probably to the last "stable" revision he could find; I didn't check, but it's what I would have done) point to that. The way to have it unprotected would probably be to promise to carry the redesign on a separate page and to replace the main page on one single edit (or a very small set of edits clustered together), instead of doing a continuous piecemeal replacement of the current design (and that should be done only after the redesign is stable, to avoid the need for more endless tweaking later). --cesarb 22:43, 3 April 2006 (UTC)
Yeah, I went a little too fast, I think. Thanks for the input. --Go for it! 04:41, 4 April 2006 (UTC)

Re:Community Portal colors

Sorry, I'm not very good with color coordination. Just take a look at my shockingly bright user page. ;) Background colors are a trivial part of the community portal, but it would be interesting to see how some different combinations would look. Personally, I like the idea of carrying over the color scheme from the main page, but the community portal probably needs a wider variety of colors since it has so many sections. Please let me know if I can help. --TantalumTelluride 00:32, 4 April 2006 (UTC)

About the same thing: The only thing that clashes in my opinion is the yellow/tan background; however, I see the effort that has gone into this and I support it. I'd like to have something more neutral with the other boxes, perhaps a light green/blue. But that is just my opinion. Titoxd 02:11, 4 April 2006 (UTC)

I think you should use a bigger variety of colors. Also be careful how you place them I find that some colors look better next to some colors than others. Tarret 02:32, 4 April 2006 (UTC)

Community portal good thoughts

Don't worry too much about the Community Portal Redesign. Although I certainly don't have nearly as much exposure to it as you do, it seems like even if there is not a consensus, most users would be willing to compromise on some combination of the first two drafts. If all goes well, everything will work out, and that will not be a problem. And your hard work is much appreciated on it, even if there is disagreement! -- Natalya 02:40, 4 April 2006 (UTC)

Thanks for the kind words. --Go for it! 04:37, 4 April 2006 (UTC)

I know you removed the comments from my talk page, but I'm sorry to hear that things are getting stressful again with an RfC. Feel free to re-post whenever you want. -- Natalya 03:23, 8 April 2006 (UTC)

Sress-o-meter back to normal

Well, now that I know that someone likes the draft, I feel much better. --Go for it! 04:36, 4 April 2006 (UTC)

Community portal redesign

Hi, it is unfortunate that it had to be protected, 'coz admins view protection as a necessary evil. Strange thing is that I never used community portal much, so I dunno abt the redesign. Polling is fine, but you may also want to start a page/sub-page in your user space or WP space comparing and contrasting the three designs. Unfortunately, I have very little time at my disposal now and hence I'm not in a position to devote much time to the issue. Keep up the good work. --Gurubrahma 13:51, 4 April 2006 (UTC)

No problem. Thanks for you work on the Community Portal! Kaldari 17:47, 6 April 2006 (UTC)

Question

What's wrong with the current color and design? I don't see any complaints. -Osbus 21:55, 6 April 2006 (UTC)

Please don't be childish

I think this edit was a bit childish, don't you? Talrias (t | e | c) 22:03, 6 April 2006 (UTC)

How so? I conveniently provided the information, which you could easily delete once you were done reading it. It did no harm, nor was any intended. Unless I inadvertantly hurt your feelings. If that's the case, it was totally unintentional. --Go for it! 22:09, 6 April 2006 (UTC)

Don't use "click here"

I just thought I'd politely let you know that the Manual of style endorses the Don't use "click here" guideline. I know that that page is mostly for articles, but many users (myself included) feel that CLICK HERE is not the best way to advertise a link even outside of the main namespace.

Just a suggestion.--HereToHelp 01:02, 7 April 2006 (UTC)

No prob. Thanks for pointing that out. --Go for it! 20:44, 7 April 2006 (UTC)

My proposal for the community portal color scheme

RFC

Hi, I have started an RFC concerning your editing habits, and because you wished to force the issue. Your input would be appreciated. Misplaced Pages:Requests_for_comment/Go_for_it!. thanks. -Quiddity 05:02, 7 April 2006 (UTC)

Tip Library

Category:Wikipedia_tips is, I guess, the tip library you are referring to. One of my other interests on Misplaced Pages is Categorisation. I'd be happy to help categorise the tips. I'll start with the ones that are there already. Is there a place where those interested could discuss the setting up of a categorisation system (maybe based on the divisions of the current Help pages)? Some category criteria I've thought of already are based on things such as "topic", "essential tips everyone needs to know", and "complexity level" (basic, moderate, advanced). It should end up very similar to the help pages, but easier to browse and the tips would be useful summaries of certain points expanded on in the help pages. One thing - is it encouraged to rewrite the tips (after publication as tip of the day) if you find they are wrong or out of date? Carcharoth 15:34, 7 April 2006 (UTC)

I'm glad you like the tip library. By all means, feel free to categorize the tips. And yes, rewriting of tips is highly encouraged. There are a finite number of tips for using Misplaced Pages, and therefore they will be repeated for the benefit of new users. --Go for it! 17:25, 7 April 2006 (UTC)

Community Portal Redesign

I noticed that the Community Portal's design was changed, with the edit comment saying that consensus was reached. After reading the discussion, it doesn't seem like any consensus was reached. I started a discussion on the Community Portal talk pageJ3ff 16:41, 7 April 2006 (UTC)

The issue that consensus was reached upon was that the reversion of the CP should be overturned immediately. That's exactly what the vote was called for. After all, the page was already there before it was reverted to a months-ago version without any discussion. Further design considerations are being dealt with on the CP talk page. --Go for it! 20:54, 7 April 2006 (UTC)

Re: color request

Unfortunately, I don't think I'll be able to help you. While I'm comfortable when designing my own user page (I have basically unlimited freedom), I'm not so sure about editing the CommPortal. Also, I don't really have much time for Misplaced Pages anymore. (I never really was all that active w/ editing, more comments and NPOV.) And lastly, I've never really been a color expert, especially w/i the constraints of those Wikipedians that like the MP color scheme (ugh). Sorry to disappoint, but I thought I'd better let you know early. Good luck with this massive undertaking. - ElAmericano (dímelo) 17:42, 7 April 2006 (UTC)

I may have a solution: use the lighter colors of the Main Page, and kill that awful tan. I did just that in my sandbox. The problem is, now it's too light! So my idea now is to get the borders from the MP boxes, sans the box for the header, and see what that looks like. The problem is, now the alignment is off. Instead of experimenting with "live" pages, can you copy the code into a sandbox of your own and see if you can get it to work?--HereToHelp 21:59, 7 April 2006 (UTC)

Tip of the day. Can you please have a look?

Hi,

I have done some (minor) changes to the first 4 or 5 subpages of Misplaced Pages:Tip of the day, but I'm not sure if that's the right place. I see that the text is also on the corresponding talk page. Could you please confirm that I modified the "master copy"? Thanks! --Gennaro Prota 02:43, 10 April 2006 (UTC)

Oh, to avoid you a waste of time, these are the pages I have modified:

--Gennaro Prota 02:53, 10 April 2006 (UTC)

stressed too but starting to calm down

I saw you on the stress alert page and thought I'd drop you a note if that's okay. My talk page reads like a punching bag, also. I'm starting to calm down mostly because of the kindness that some people have shown me. But also because I'm not taking any phony political bullcrap either. I'm real new on Misplaced Pages about 3 weeks new. But I found out that edits can be made, even on controversial political articles. It I stay relentless. I hope you figure out how to do whatever you are doing. Send me a comment any time. I can use friends, too. Maggiethewolfstar 06:59, 22 April 2006 (UTC)

WP:DDGLO

I think that you will want to look at this. It is a proposed guideline that seems to have unanimous consensus. Please feel free to comment on it.--HereToHelp 19:59, 22 April 2006 (UTC)

totd light bulb

Hi. I noticed the light bulb you are using on various totd templates doesn't line up with the text like it should (and does in Firefox) in Internet Explorer. It takes its own line and the text appears below it, creating a lot of whitespace. Moving it after the transcluded tip puts it at the very bottom. I have removed it from {{totd2}} but not the other templates that use it. I am running possibly the worst operating system in the world Windows Me, and (not) using Internet Explorer 6.
