Hello, I'm BracketBot. I have automatically detected that your edit to Lancaster, Pennsylvania may have broken the syntax by modifying 1 "()"s. If you have, don't worry, just edit the page again to fix it. If I misunderstood what happened, or if you have any questions, you can leave a message on my operator's talk page.

List of unpaired brackets remaining on the page:

Arkansas Project

Hey! That sounds good to me - I'm in! BZA99 (talk) 02:04, 15 August 2013 (UTC)

Let me throw this out to you. The article about Harrison, Arkansas needs a good, solid writing of its history--particularly its history of oppression towards African-Americans. The town is unique. It was a sundown town (a mere 2 sentence entry in its history), it's the headquarters of the KKK (a fact that keeps getting deleted and shouldn't), and in 2003 its mayor met with community leaders to address "evils resulting from past events" (no mention and there should be). I feel that if someone wrote a thorough, factual, encyclopedic, and neutral history of this town--the good, bad, ugly, and hopeful--it would be less prone to attack. Take a look at my write on the history of Mena, Arkansas, and also at the Talk page for Harrison. Let me know your thoughts. Richard Apple (talk) 04:26, 15 August 2013 (UTC)

Randolph Mitchell House

Publishers are typically located in better-known cities; having simply "New Lexington" is unhelpful for readers, so it is important to have a link in this section. Nyttend (talk) 04:40, 16 August 2013 (UTC)

I'm getting it from common sense and a desire to help readers. This is a basic method of helping readers, which is what should be driving everything we do here. Nyttend (talk) 06:53, 16 August 2013 (UTC)

Disambiguation link notification for August 16

Hi. Thank you for your recent edits. Misplaced Pages appreciates your help. We noticed though that when you edited Frankfort Springs, Pennsylvania, you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page Robert Martin (check to confirm | fix with Dab solver). Such links are almost always unintended, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of "Did you mean..." article titles. Read the FAQ • Join us at the DPL WikiProject.

Using IMDB

By the way, your link to how to cite using IMDB mentioned an inappropriate use as "Any potentially contentious material about living persons (BLPs)", such as birthplace? IMDB often just copies the information on Misplaced Pages. It's circular. Until a reliable third-party source can be found for BLP facts, they should be challenged and/or removed. Cheers! The Rambling Man (talk) 18:51, 20 August 2013 (UTC)

Hi, Richard. A belated welcome to Misplaced Pages. :)
In addition to violating WP:CIRCULAR, which Rambling Man mentioned above, citing IMDB is also a violation of WP:USERG, as sites with user-generated content, are not reliable under that guideline. This includes blogs, open forums or message boards, other wikis, and other sites that accept contributions from users, like Patch Media, Cracked.com, IMDB (except in some cases where the material comes from the site's editorial staff), etc.
Regarding your comment that "biographical data from IMDb is neither disputed or inappropriate...", IMDB is widely disputed as an unreliable source for the above-stated reasons. Simply go to the Reliable Sources Noticeboard and look through the archived discussions for IMDB, and you'll see plenty of dispute on it.
As for your statement "see WP:Citing IMDb", WP:Citing IMDb is an essay, not a policy a guideline. Moreover, even that essay mentions that it is disputed as a source, as indicated by the opening sentence on that page, and the writer of that essay opines that the only two things for which even he/she thinks IMDB is reliable are 1. writing credits supplied by the WGA, and 2. reasons for the MPAA's ratings that are supplied by that organization. August 2013 vandalism warnings

Information icon Hello, I'm Alansohn. I noticed that you made a change to an article, Clinton, New Jersey, but you didn't provide a reliable source. It's been removed for now, but if you'd like to include a citation and re-add it, please do so! If you think I made a mistake, or if you have any questions, you can leave me a message on my talk page. Thank you. rv chg; remove unsourced entry per WP:LISTPEOPLE, as discussed extensively before. If you have a source, then add it. Alansohn (talk) 20:55, 27 August 2013 (UTC)

Information icon Please do not add or change content, as you did to Hackettstown, New Jersey, without verifying it by citing a reliable source. Please review the guidelines at Misplaced Pages:Citing sources and take this opportunity to add references to the article. Thank you. rv chg; remove unsourced entry per WP:LISTPEOPLE, as discussed extensively with this editor. Source must be in this article and a mention of a source in another article accomplishes nothing. Alansohn (talk) 20:58, 27 August 2013 (UTC)

WP:LISTPEOPLE is rather clear: "A person may be included in a list of people if all the following requirements are met: 1) The person meets the Misplaced Pages notability requirement. An exception to this requirement may be made if the person is famous for a specific event, the notability requirement need not be met. If a person in a list does not have an article in Misplaced Pages about them, a citation (or link to another article) must be provided to establish their membership in the list's group and to establish their notability on either BLP1E or BIO1E. 2) The person's membership in the list's group is established by reliable sources." I'm not sure if the issue is that yo don't understand this policy or that you simply refuse to follow it. I have explained this several times before, but your only actions have been to delete the comments here and go on with the same persistent refusal to add the sources. You know how to do it, why not just add the sources as required by Misplaced Pages policy? Alansohn (talk) 21:05, 27 August 2013 (UTC)

Um...did you read what you just wrote? "If a person in a list does not have an article in Misplaced Pages about them, a citation (or link to another article) must be provided". Each name I added has a Wiki article. I'm not sure what your issue is. Richard Apple (talk) 21:14, 27 August 2013 (UTC)
All of the requirements must be met. The sentence you are quoting is in requirement 1. Requirement 2 specifies that "The person's membership in the list's group is established by reliable sources." You've only met half of the requirements. You are required to add sources, you have the sources and you know perfectly well how to add them. Why not just follow policy? Alansohn (talk) 21:24, 27 August 2013 (UTC)
"If a person in a list does not have an article in Misplaced Pages about them, a citation (or link to another article) must be provided" is not the same thing as saying that a citation doesn't have to be provided if they do have a Misplaced Pages article. As an editor and admin, my practice has always been that almost all material in articles requires a citation. Other Misplaced Pages articles cannot be used as sources, since that is WP:CIRCULAR, and would require a reader to go to another article for verifiability, which is inappropriate. Alansohn, djflem and myself are the three editors who do most of the editing on Hudson County-related articles, and it has long been our practice to remove material from the articles (in particular material on people) that is not accompanied by a citation. This is also my practice on all other articles I edit, like List of suicides, Pawn Stars, etc. If the target article has a citation, I would respectfully ask that you include that citation when adding such names to lists in other articles, Richard. We would really appreciate it. Nightscream (talk) 21:36, 27 August 2013 (UTC)
Thank you for your very reasoned and non-confrontational explanation, particularly about circular citations. I'll add references to lists in the future. And thank you for all the work you do on Misplaced Pages. Richard Apple (talk) 21:45, 27 August 2013 (UTC)
