A web directory is a listing of websites organized in a hierarchy of categories.

  • AccessPlace - A two part resource containing a website directory which is a collection of hand selected websites as well as a UK business database.
  • Answers.com - Provides a portal to more specialized "directories" (including Misplaced Pages) depending on the category of information.
  • Best of the Web Directory - Lists content rich, well designed websites categorized both by topic and by region.
  • Gimpsy - A directory organized by activity.
  • GoGuides - One of a couple of directories that supplanted Disney's Go.com directory after it closed.
  • Hedir - Open and free directory based on a community review system.
  • JoeAnt - A community of editors from the now-defunct Go.com volunteer edited directory.
  • LinkCentre - Free web directory established in 1996 and built by web publishers from around the world.
  • LookSmart - Operates a mainly commercial directory, with some free content from its Zeal community program for non-commercial entries.
  • Monkey Look - Open source directory, categorized by relevency and region.
  • Open Directory Project (aka DMoz or ODP) - The largest directory of the web, licensed to mirror sites, such as the Google Directory.
  • Skaffe - Another directory formed by former Go.com editors.
  • VFunk - Online directory that specializes in listing and categorizing global dance music & urban lifestyle listings.
  • Web-beacon - A family-friendly directory of websites.
  • World Wide Web Virtual Library (VLIB) - The oldest directory of the Web.
  • UK Pages - Regional links to local UK business websites via town or city.
  • Yahoo! Directory - Their directory was the first service Yahoo! offered.
  • Yemoo - Online directory organized by categories and vistors rating. All websites are checked by editors.
  • Zeal - Volunteer-built web directory, first appearing in 1999, and then acquired by LookSmart in October 2000. Looksmart shut down the Zeal website in 2006.
