One of the top law schools in the United States, it was ranked 17th in the 2006 U.S. News and World Report survey of U.S. law schools. The school has a student body of approximately 600 students and is known for the scholarly productivity of its faculty and its collegial atmosphere.
Recognized for some time as a Southern powerhouse, the school has gained an excellent national reputation and consistently places its students at top law firms across the country. The dean of the law school is Edward Rubin, formerly the Theodore K. Warner, Jr. Professor of Law at the University of Pennsylvania Law School. The school currently has one former student serving as a Clerk on the U.S. Supreme Court (Ashley Jones Johnson '04 for Justice Clarence Thomas).
Vanderbilt is home to several of the nation's leading constitutional law scholars, including Suzanna Sherry (who specializes in federal courts), James F. Blumstein (who has argued several cases before the United States Supreme Court), and Tom McCoy (who is an expert in First Amendment jurisprudence). It also has great strength in the area of corporate law and offers students the ability to earn a Certificate in Law & Business.
In the spring of 2006, the law school announced the creation of a new program to award a Ph.D. in Law & Economics -- the first program of its kind in the nation. They anticipate admitting their first class in Fall 2007.
