He is an up and coming player aged only 19 years old, but has already had success as a tennis player by making the Juniors Semi Finals at the 2004 Australian Open. He participated in the 2006 Hopman Cup with fellow Serbian Player Ana Ivanović where the pairing narrowly missed the final.
He is good friends with fellow junior graduate Andrew Murray. Murray was part of the Great Britain team that Serbia and Montenegro defeated in the Davis Cup in Glasgow in April 2006. Djokovic got the decisive win on 9th April, by defeating Greg Rusedski in four sets in the fourth match, giving his team an unasailable 3-1 lead in their best of 5 series.
In May 2006, various reports appeared in the British media about Novak's mother Dijana reportedly approaching Britain's Lawn Tennis Association about her son joining British tennis ranks and the possibility of their entire 5-person family moving from Serbia to live in Britain.
Đoković is yet to address the issue directly in Serbian media. Journalists' questions about the English media reports have mostly been met with Đoković's halfhearted denials and suggestions that the British association were just being gracious hosts during the Davis Cup tie and that the issue of him getting a British passport was never seriously discussed.
Đoković's best showing in a grand slam was reaching the quarter finals of Roland Garros in 2006 in a run including a win over top ten player Fernando Gonzalez. He eventually had to retire of injury when he was two sets down to Rafael Nadal.
