Dele Jegede (stylized as dele jegede) is a Nigerian-American painter, art historian, cartoonist, curator, art critic, art administrator, and teacher. Jegede is a Senior Post-Doctoral Fellow at the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, DC, (1995), Chair (2005-2010) and Professor of Art at Miami University in Oxford, Ohio.

Jegede is recipient of the Distinguished Africanist Award of the University of Texas.

Early life and education

Dele Jegede was born in 1945 in Ikere-Ekiti, Ekiti State, Nigeria and earned his first degree in Fine Arts from the Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, Nigeria, in 1973. From 1979 to 1983, he studied art history under Roy Sieber at Indiana University, Bloomington, Indiana, where he received his MA and PhD degrees.

Professional career

Jegede began his professional career in Nigeria as a cartoonist and painter, who used his work to inveigh against the excesses of the privileged and the marginalization of the downtrodden. Toyin Falola describes Jegede's oeuvre as "...a mirror of his life experiences and journeys, depicting contemporary conditions of lifestyle, economies, and politics that he has witnessed firsthand, the harsh conditions of life in Nigeria, and the consciousness of exile. His art inscribes a visual text, allowing us to intellectualize the history of his people and the climate where he lives."


In his most recent solo exhibition, Jegede declared: "My art is cathartic. It is an averment of my personal aesthetics: an articulation of the pangs and anxieties, the socio-cultural bemusements and contradictions, and the political conundrums and economic predilections that have continued to assault my sensibilities as a Diasporic."

Jegede's art is on display in various public and private collections in Nigeria and the U.S.

Jegede's publications include Contemporary African Art: Five Artists, Diverse Trends (2000); Women to Women: Weaving Cultures, Shaping History (2000), and Encyclopedia of African American Artists: Artists of the American Mosaic (2009)

Teaching and Scholarship

Jegede was on the faculty of the University of Lagos from 1977 to 1992. In 1993, Jegede accepted a job offer from Indiana State University, Terre Haute and relocated there with his family. He has developed and taught courses in studio art and art history (African and African American) at various institutions, including the Yaba of Technology, Lagos, Spelman College, Atlanta, Indiana State University, Terre Haute, and Miami University, Oxford, Ohio. In September 2013, a festchrift was presented to him by his professional and academic peers.
