Educated at Trinity Hall, Cambridge.
He was colonel of the Norfolk Yeomanry, which he raised in 1900 until his retirement in 1913 on the Eve of the Great War.
He was aide-de-camp to King Edward VII, 1906-10 and King George V in 1910. He was appointed a Member of the Royal Victorian Order in 1901 and promoted to Commander of that Order in 1906. He was also a commander of the Order of St Olav of Norway.
He was of Hanworth Hall in Norfolk.
