It comes from the Arabic verb "sadda" which means "fended off", or "kept the harm away". The car bumper is called "saddam" in Arabic, the front and back bumper are called saddamat, the plural of saddam. In the Iraqi culture, the name means protector of the weak or defender of the tribe, with a very noble sense of the word. This name has been put in negative light after the Iraq war, thus erroneous rendering of the name into English such as "One who confronts", other erraneous meanings that reflect political views rather than true meaning include: "One who frequently causes collisions", "Powerful collider", "One who causes a collision that had bad results", "Powerful confronter", "One who frequently crashes", or "Powerful commander". The name has risen in popularity in some Muslim populations after the War in Iraq and the former President's execution.
