Peep and the Big Wide World is an American/Canadian produced Flash animation television series created by Canadian Animator Kaj Pindal and based on the 1988 short film Peep and the Big Wide World produced by the National Film Board of Canada. The current series premiered on April 12, 2004 on Discovery Kids and on TLC on the block Ready Set Learn. It debuted on PBS Kids on April 12, 2004. It was produced by WGBH, and 9 Story Entertainment. The series ran on April 12, 2004 through September 14, 2010 with 55 episodes. On October 10, 2010, the series was removed on the Discovery Kids lineup due from the new channel The Hub Network. It now airs nationally in the United States on public television, distributed by American Public Television. Peep and the Big Wide World is currently sponsored by the National Science Foundation in conjunction with WGBH-FM as part of an educational and outreach program. The National Science Foundation is the only permanent sponsor of the show. Northrop Grumman, The Carnegie Corporation of New York, the Corporation for Public Broadcasting, Chuck E. Cheese's, ExxonMobil, Toyota and Viewers Like You. Thank You funded the show for only season two. The Discovery Kids Foundation funded the show for only season one.

Overview

Young viewers follow Peep, Chirp, and Quack as they investigate and explore the world around them. Following the 9-minute animated segment, there is a 2-minute live-action segment with children exploring and demonstrating the same topic presented in the animated segment. Animation consists of bright colors and simple shapes.

  • Peep (Voiced by Scott Beaudin (2004-2007), Tim Whitnall (2007-2009), & Maxwell Uretsky (2009-2010)) is a baby chicken who is very curious and that is who the show is named after.
  • Chirp (Voiced by Amanda Soha (2004-2005), & Shawn Molko (2005-2010)) a baby robbin who is curious and has pink eyelashes and is Peep's best friend.
  • Quack (Voiced by Jamie Watson) a teenaged drake who is friendly but sometimes bossy and lives at the lake.
  • The Narrator (Voiced by Stanley Jackson (1962), Peter Ustinov (1988), & Joan Cusack (2004-2010)) he is known as The Narrator by the characters.

  • Ant (Voiced by Robert Tinkler) An ant who sometimes has trouble finding food for his colony.
  • Beaver Boy (Voiced by Tessa Marshall (2004-2007), & Amanda Grynewski (2007-2010)) A young beaver lives in an ajoining pond to Quack's.
  • Beaver Mom Beaver Boy's Mom.
  • Beaver Dad (Voiced by Phillip Williams) Beaver Boy's dad.
  • Dragonfly (Voiced by Catherine Disher) A dragonfly.
  • Fish Cohabitants of Quack's pond.
  • Hoot (Voiced by Corinne Conley (2004-2005), & Vanessa Redgrave (2005-2009)) A minacing, but kind owl who lives in the "Deep, Dark, Woods".
  • Nellie (Voiced by Marium Carvell (2004-2005), & Yvette Nicole Brown (2005-2007)) A worldly dog at a nearby home who acts as a maternal figure to the birds.
  • Newton (Voiced by Colin Fox (2004-2005), & Keith Scott (2005-2010)) An old, male turtle who lives under a apple tree.
  • Honk (Voiced by Megan Mullally) A pink goose who Has her own pond, build by Quack, Peep, Chirp, Beaver Boy and his parents.
  • Rabbit (Voiced by Daniel Brochu (2004-2005), & Jayne Eastwood (2005-2010)) An excitable and somewhat distracted rabbit.
  • Robin (Voiced by Holly Hunter) An adult robin.
  • Skunk (Voiced by Adrian Truss) A skunk who lives near Quack's pond.

Music composition

Music for Peep and the Big Wide World is composed by Terry Tompkins and Steve D'Angelo, from Eggplant. The opening theme is performed by Taj Mahal.
