It is the second largest city of the region next to Novi Sad. Its name stems from word "Saturday" in Serbian language. The city has population of 100,386 and it is situated only about 10 km from the border with Hungary. Surroundings of Subotica are mainly farmland but the city itself is an important Serbian industrial and transportation centre.
It is the administrative center of the North Backa District of Serbia.
