Revision as of 14:13, 5 May 2014 by Arcticocean (talk | contribs) (fix navlink)(diff) ← Previous revision | Latest revision (diff) | Newer revision → (diff)This is a documentation subpage for Template:Contentious topics/alert/first. It may contain usage information, categories and other content that is not part of the original template page. |
This template should always be substituted (i.e., use {{subst:Contentious topics/alert/first}} ). Any accidental transclusions will be automatically substituted by a bot. |
Usage
When editors are contributing to pages that are subject to Discretionary Sanctions (DS), under the DS system they may be Alerted that discretionary sanctions are in effect. To alert a user, you must use this alert template to leave a message on their talk page. Alerts ensure a user does not contribute to DS topic areas without knowing the relevant rules. Alerts are a neutral courtesy; never use them to intimidate, coerce, or shame another editor. When alerting, use of this template is mandatory; hand-written notes do not count as alerts under the DS system rules.
To alert a user, paste the following template code in a new section on their user talk page (replacing topic code – see list
with the corresponding code from the table below).
{{subst:Ds/alert|topic code – select from list}} ~~~~
Logging
Using this template on a user talk page will trigger EditFilter 602. That filter will require you to confirm you want to leave an alert by pressing 'Save page' a second time. Your edit containing the alert will then be tagged as "discretionary sanctions alert". Subsequently, edits with this tag can be searched for in user contributions, user talk page histories, Special:RecentChanges, and the log at EditFilter 602's page.
As a result, an automatic system log of all alerts is maintained; you do not need to add the alert manually to a log. To see whether a user has been Alerted to discretionary sanctions, load the history of their user talk page and search for discretionary sanctions alert
under the 'tag filter' field. You can use the {{Ds/log}} template (usually alongside {{user}} in noticeboard reports) to quickly generate links for conducting searches of issued alerts.
While the template is in beta mode, alerts will only be tagged in edits that have little or no additional content other than the template code. You should therefore avoid leaving lengthy supplementary comments when posting the alert template: post only the alert to the user's talk page, and make any additional comments in a different edit, to avoid your alert not being logged.
Codes
When leaving a user an Alert, you must replace |topic code – select from list
with the relevant topic code:
Notes for advanced users
- Substituted instances of this template are tracked using the Z-number template {{Z33}}. Use of this template can be tracked at Special:WhatLinksHere/Template:Z33.
- Edits containing a substituted instance of this template will trigger AbuseFilter 602. The exact text which triggers the AbuseFilter are declared in the publicly-viewable filter conditions.
- If the parameter
|1=
fails to display,|topic=
or|t=
can be used instead. - This template will return an error if:
|1=
or an equivalent is not declared;- the template is not substituted; or
- the template is used outside the user talk or user namespaces.
- Template:Alert is a mirror of (i.e. a redirect to) Template:Ds/alert. Instructions for this template, Ds/alert, are often given with reference to the template Alert. This is for brevity's sake; the two templates are identical.
- Information on adding new topic areas to the index above is given at the bottom of Template:Ds/topics/single notice, which is displayed at the bottom of the main template page.
- This template is included in Category:Misplaced Pages templates to be automatically substituted, so AnomieBOT will automatically substitute it. (As the template returns an error if used unsubstituted, AnomieBOT will not have to frequently, if ever, do this.)
