UFO sightings in outer space were alleged throughout Project Mercury, Project Gemini, and the Apollo program including a hoax perpetuated by science fiction writer Otto Binder claiming Apollo 11 Commander Neil Armstrong, had encountered UFOs during the mission.
Official analyst and reports have found no reason to believe any of the sightings have extraterrestrial origins.
1965
Gemini 4
During the Gemini 4 mission, pilot Jim McDivitt most likely mistook his rocket booster for an unknown object.
Gemini 7
James Oberg, based on his trajectory analysis of the Gemini 7 mission, describes the astronauts' comments about a "bogey" as referring to booster-associated debris, and not a reference to some sort of UFO. The astronaut who made the comments, Frank Borman, later confirmed that what he saw was not a UFO.
1991
STS-48
A video taken during mission STS-48 of Space Shuttle Discovery while in orbit on September 15, 1991 shows a flash of light and several objects. NASA explained the objects as ice particles reacting to engine jets, while James Oberg speculated that the flash was from a thruster firing. Philip C. Plait discussed the issue in his book Bad Astronomy, agreeing with NASA. James Oberg presented a paper at Purdue University that showed how illumination conditions and thruster firings were capable of producing the sequences in question. He has also posted data and telemetry records that support a prosaic explanation.
1996
STS-75
The Space Shuttle Columbia was deploying a satellite connected to a 12 mile tether that broke. After that, hundreds of objects were captured on a camera circling the disconnected tether. A model experiment was later conducted to see if an optical illusion could account for the sighting, and the experimenter believed the sighting was an optical illusion.
STS-80 incidents
An analysis done in 1999 by former Mission Control specialist James Oberg concluded that all the objects were nearby sunlit debris.
2001
STS-102
A video broadcast during mission STS-102 of Space Shuttle Discovery while in orbit allegedly recorded on March 19, 2001 by Jeff Challender shows a flash of light and three objects which performed movements which included starting, stopping, accelerating, and making sudden angled turns.
2005
In 2005 during a six-month mission on the International Space Station, astronaut Leroy Chiao witnessed lights in a formation he describes as an "upside-down check mark" during a spacewalk with cosmonaut, Salizhan Sharipov. Sharipov did not witness the event. Chiao states that the lights were from a string of fishing boats. In 2013, bright objects were spotted outside the ISS and was captured by NASA's live cam.
List of reported UFO sightings in outer space
This is a list of alleged sightings of unidentified flying objects or UFOs in outer space.
Date | Ship | Crew | Description |
---|---|---|---|
May 15, 1963 | Project Mercury | Gordon Cooper | Gordon Cooper reported a sighting of a green-hued glowing object approaching his capsule. The alleged UFO was detected by radar. Cooper has denied this incident. |
June 3-7, 1965 | Gemini 4 | James McDivitt Edward Higgins White |
McDivitt noticed and photographed a "white cylindrical shape with a white pole sticking out of one corner of it". |
August 2, 1965 | Gemini 5 | Gordon Cooper | Cooper noticed a silver egg like object with a green light. |
September 12, 1966 | Gemini 11 | Richard F. Gordon, Jr. Pete Conrad |

They reported a UFO near Hyginus on the Moon. |
July 20, 1969 | Apollo 11 | Neil Armstrong Michael Collins Buzz Aldrin |
Neil Armstrong was reported to have witnessed multiple UFOs during Apollo 11. An explanation was that the sightings could have been attributed to jettisoned components. Additional stories were accredited to a hoax spread by science fiction writer Otto Binder. Buzz Aldrin claims his words were taken out of context from an interview in 2005 about the incident. |
November 14-14, 1969 | Apollo 12 | Pete Conrad Richard F. Gordon, Jr. Alan Bean |
Controls on Earth noticed an object near the moon and witness two luminous UFO at close range. |
November 7-19, 1972 | Apollo 17 | Eugene Cernan Ronald Evans Harrison Schmitt |
The crew witnessed and photographed a greenish-blue UFO hovering above the Moon. |
February 22 - March 9, 1996 | STS-75 | Andrew M. Allen Scott J. Horowitz |
Hundreds of unidentified objects circling a broken tether were filmed on camera |
May 19 - 29, 1996 | STS-77 | John H. Casper Curtis Brown Andrew S. Thomas Daniel W. Bursch Mario Runco, Jr. Marc Garneau |
Lights spotted, of uncertain origin: trouble differentiating between ground or star lights. |
November 19 - December 7, 1996 | STS-80 | Kenneth D. Cockrell Kent Rominger Story Musgrave Thomas David Jones Tamara E. Jernigan |
Ice like UFOs particles were spotted during the mission that had a 90 degree change in trajectory. |
March 8 - 21, 2001 | STS-102 | James D. Wetherbee James M. Kelly Andrew S. W. Thomas Paul W. Richards |
Trajectory changing particles were seen out the capsule which could not be attributed to thruster firing. |
