Vanes Martirosyan - Only 20 years old, Vanes (pr. VAH-nes) is a young boxer prospect at 154 pounds.
He recently signed a promotional contract with Top Rank. Promoter Bob Arum said, “This is a major signing for us. We think Vanes is a tremendous talent and a future star, and we have big plans for him.”
Vanes is co-managed by Shelly Finkel, who also manages or advises IBF super middleweight world champion Jeff Lacy, former world champions Manny Pacquiao and Fernando Vargas, and others.
Vanes is trained by Freddie Roach, who was voted “2003 Trainer of the Year” by the Boxing Writers Association of America.
Vanes said, “I signed with Shelly the day before the fight when Bernard Hopkins beat Howard Eastman in Los Angeles. I’ve been training with Freddie ever since I got back from the Olympics. I’m just excited, I can’t wait to get in there.”
Regarding his nickname, Vanes said, “When I was coming up to the Olympics, that’s what everybody was calling me, ‘Nightmare.’ When I was fighting in the Western Trials, I just started beating all the guys that were ranked. Nobody knew me, so I was like an underdog coming in and beating everybody. So they started calling me Nightmare every time I stepped into the ring.”
