The Legend of Zelda is an unofficial placeholder name for the next The Legend of Zelda video game to be released by Nintendo on the Wii U. The game will feature an open world in which players find different ways to approach areas. Nintendo plans to release the game in 2015.

Development

The game had been rumored for many years. Nintendo showed a tech demo at E3 2011 featuring a Zelda mockup, although this was not incorporated into later previews. On January 23, 2013 during a Nintendo Direct video stream, Eiji Aonuma updated about the progress of Zelda for the Nintendo Wii U. He stated that the game still had a significant ways to go, but in the mean time, announced the remake of The Wind Waker for the Nintendo Wii U, set for release in Fall of 2013. Regarding Zelda Wii U, Aonuma particularly mentioned that Nintendo would be rethinking many of the conventions of Zelda, including the order a player is supposed to complete dungeons, and how Zelda is a 'Play by yourself' game.

In an edition of Iwata Asks in November of 2011, Nintendo president Satoru Iwata stated that the five-year development of Skyward Sword was quite long. In response to this, Skyward Sword director Hidemaro Fujibayashi set the following goal.

I'll think of something that can happen in three years!

— Fujibayashi, Iwata Asks

The game, including an initial trailer, was officially unveiled at Nintendo's E3 2014 digital briefing. The game is set for release in 2015.

Gameplay

The game features an open world in which players can reach different areas in a variety of ways, from different directions. Once clearing obstacles they can approach an area from any direction.

The trailer from E3 2014 featured a person thought to be Link, a horse, and a large monster.

Graphics

Nintendo showed a tech demo featuring Link at E3 2011. However, Eiji Aonuma has stated that what was shown at E3 was merely a demonstration of the system's power, not a teaser for a new Zelda game. Not only was the demo used to show gamers the graphical capabilities, but it was developed to help design the system.

The game features a new visual style, which Metro has called similar to that of Skyward Sword but more realistic.

Controls

In the 2011 tech demo, the Wii U Game Pad screen featured Link's inventory and map. This was not shown in the E3 2014 reveal.

It is unclear if the game will feature motion controls. In an interview at E3 2012, Miyamoto hints that the Zelda game in development for Wii U may not include motion controls.
