The second battle of Mariupol began on the east of Mariupol, south-east Ukraine, on 5 September 2014, just 8 hours before the ceasefire treaty was signed in Minsk later same day.
Events
The offensive against Mariupol began on 28 August 2014, when rebel forces captured the town of Novoazovsk and marched towards Mariupol. The Ukrainian soldiers that left Novoazovsk retreated to Mariupol to defend the city from an attack. Many citizens left Mariupol due to fear of an attack. 7 tanks (T-64 type) of Ukrainian armed forces faced in battle 30 tanks (T-80 type) of advancing Russian Army, that starting from 24 August invaded the Novoazovsk Raion of Ukraine to the east. Ukrainians withheld the attack but lost 4 tanks and retreated with the 3 remaining tanks to the army checkpoint on the outskirts of Mariupol, where they were met by the Ukrainian journalist Sergiy Karazy who reported the event. The commander of Ukrainian tank brigade was in the state of post-shock state but they were going to return to battlefield, loading the ammunition in the surviving 3 tanks.
