Big Eyes is an upcoming biographical drama film directed by Tim Burton. The film will focus on the artist Margaret Keane, whose work was fraudulently claimed in the 1950s and 1960s by her then-husband, Walter Keane. The film tells the story of their heated divorce battle wherein Margaret accused Walter of stealing her paintings. Margaret Keane will be played by Amy Adams, with Walter being portrayed by Christoph Waltz. The film is scheduled to be released on December 25, 2014, by The Weinstein Company.

Plot

Margaret Keane's work as an artist became phenomenally successful in the 1950s, but Margaret was given no recognition for her work. Her husband, Walter Keane, claimed to be the artist and became a national celebrity and talk show fixture in the 1950s after he pioneered the mass production of prints of big-eyed kids, and used his marketing savvy to sell them cheaply in hardware stores and gas stations across the country. Margaret generated the paintings from their basement and Walter's contribution was adding his signature to the bottom. The ruse broke up their marriage, and when she tried to make it known that she authored the paintings, they ended up in a court battle after Walter called her crazy. The case culminated in a dramatic courtroom showdown. The judge put up two easels, side by side, and challenged each of them to start painting. He begged off, blaming a shoulder injury, while she dashed off her familiar big-eyed creation.

Production

In September 2010, it was announced that Scott Alexander and Larry Karaszewski were writing Big Eyes with Tim Burton as producer. They had previously collaborated on Ed Wood.

The film was supposed to be directed by Alexander and Karaszewski with Reese Witherspoon and Ryan Reynolds as its leads. However, Burton took over with Amy Adams and Christoph Waltz replacing the roles of Witherspoon and Reynolds. The film will be distributed by The Weinstein Company. On May 1, 2014, it was announced that the film would be released on December 25, 2014. On September 19, 2014, an official trailer was released.
