Recurring cast and characters

Main article: List of Marvel Cinematic Universe film actors

As the franchise is composed of films adapted from a variety of Marvel Comics properties, there are multiple recurring lead actors. Robert Downey, Jr. stars as Tony Stark / Iron Man in Iron Man, Iron Man 2, and Iron Man 3; Chris Hemsworth portrays Thor in Thor and Thor: The Dark World; and Chris Evans portrays Steve Rogers / Captain America in Captain America: The First Avenger and Captain America: The Winter Soldier, and will reprise the role in Captain America 3. All three actors star in The Avengers, and are slated to reprise their roles in Avengers: Age of Ultron. Samuel L. Jackson had cameo and supporting appearances as Nick Fury in Iron Man, Iron Man 2, Thor, and Captain America: The First Avenger, before costarring in The Avengers and Captain America: The Winter Soldier. Other cast members who have recurred across multiple film franchises within the universe include Clark Gregg as Phil Coulson in Iron Man, Iron Man 2, Thor, and The Avengers; Tom Hiddleston as Loki in Thor, The Avengers, and Thor: The Dark World; Scarlett Johansson as Natasha Romanoff / Black Widow in Iron Man 2, The Avengers, and Captain America: The Winter Soldier; Gwyneth Paltrow as Pepper Potts in Iron Man, Iron Man 2, The Avengers, and Iron Man 3; Jeremy Renner as Clint Barton / Hawkeye in Thor and The Avengers; Stellan Skarsgård as Erik Selvig in Thor, The Avengers, and Thor: The Dark World; and Cobie Smulders as Maria Hill in The Avengers and Captain America: The Winter Soldier.

Multiple roles have been recast during the franchise's run. Terrence Howard, who portrayed James Rhodes in Iron Man, was replaced by Don Cheadle, who plays the character in Iron Man 2 and Iron Man 3. Edward Norton, who portrayed the lead role of Bruce Banner / Hulk in The Incredible Hulk, did not reprise the role in The Avengers, with Mark Ruffalo cast in his place. Josh Dallas, who portrayed Fandral in Thor, could not commit to the sequel; Zachary Levi plays the character in Thor: The Dark World. Howard Stark has also been portrayed by multiple actors, but not due to recasting: John Slattery played the character in Iron Man 2, and will again in Ant-Man, while Dominic Cooper played a younger version of the character in Captain America: The First Avenger, and Gerard Sanders appeared as an older version of the character in on-screen photos in Iron Man. Paul Bettany was the first actor to portray multiple characters in the franchise, voicing Tony Stark's artificial intelligence J.A.R.V.I.S. in Iron Man, Iron Man 2, The Avengers, and Iron Man 3, and portraying Vision in Avengers: Age of Ultron.
