Gope was a Hindi film actor born in 1917. His parents had nine children. He did his schooling in Karachi (now in Pakistan), in British India. His real name was Gope Kamlani. His acting talent was given strength by film maker K.S. Darayani who told him to join filmline. So with his help, Gope moved to Bombay(now Mumbai) to act in films. Gope acted in his first film Insaan Ya Shaitaan in 1933 which he starred with Jaddan Bai, mother of Hindi film actress Nargis.
Gope then became very popular and was fitted in comedy roles also and he was best comedian of film industry at that time. Gope acted in other memorable roles in films like Hindustan Hamara, Patanga, Chori Chori. Gope also tried playing negative roles. In the 1951 Dilip Kumar-Madhubala starter film Taraana, he teamed up with Jeevan to play the villain role in a comic style. He started Gope Productions in the 1950s, which made films as Hangama and Biradari. Some of these films were directed by Gope’s brother, Ram Kamlani. Gope married to actress Latika and continued to act in films till his death in 1957
