Irish Army Deafness involved the Irish Defence Forces and the state. Individual members of the defence forces took actions against the state claiming hearing loss as the state had failed to provide ear protectors during firing exercises. The lump-sum tax-free payouts have proved a major boost to barracks areas such as the Curragh, Co. Kildare and Athlone.
