The book "Foundation for Inner Peace; Wapnick, Kenneth (Feb 1, 1997). Concordance of 'A Course in Miracles'. Viking Adult. ISBN 0670869953." is not a reference source. I own the book. It is a concordance for ACIM. It is not a reference source and I think it should be removed.

I do own "Wapnick, Kenneth (Apr1991). Absence from Felicity. Foundation for a Course in Miracles. 0-933291-08-6." I believe it is a useful reference source for the article.

"Branch, Rick (1994). The Watchman Expositor: A Course in Miracles Profile. Watchman Fellowship, Inc.. Retrieved on July 18, 2006." I did find this article on the net. It seems useful as an online reference.

"Foundation for Inner Peace (1992). A course in miracles. The Foundation. ISBN 0-9606388-8-1." I do own this book as well as a number of other versions of ACIM. It is a primary source.

"Williamson, Marianne (Apr 24, 1996). A Return to Love. Perennial Currents. 0060927488." This was/is a popular book derived from ACIM.

I do not own and have not read the other references. Does anyone else own these books or has anyone read them?

Do the editors involved with this article really wish to understand the material and work together in good faith to improve the article? If so, this will require obtaining and studying the references. I am willing to do so.

I agree that the page looks like what Misplaced Pages calls "Original Research". This is because it is. The article was written by a (very kind) man who reads the Course and who was simply trying to provide information about it. He isn't in any way making money off of the Course. He simply likes to write articles about ACIM on Misplaced Pages. I am attempting to edit this page to make it more neutral, because, frankly, I like the thought of that. I'd like this page to be crisp and "cold" (what I mean is, I'd like this page to be completely without any flowery prose; flowery prose has its place, but usually not in such articles). -- Andrew Parodi 03:19, 30 June 2006 (UTC)

The summarization found in this article is sourced directly from the book. Admittedly there is much "summarization" of the ACIM text on this page that has been agreed upon by several students of this work. The work is rather lengthy and I see no reason that a summary of the work is inappropriate here. If anyone might feel they might have a more accurate summary than found here, by all means, please edit away.

This claim of no sources appears to be written by some who have not read the material. Otherwise they would not be making a blanket request for sources but would be pointing to specific sentences which they believe to be incompatible with the source text. Unless someone is able to point out a single sentence in this article which they are certain is not supported by the text, I submit that this claim of being unsourced is rather a stab in the dark by those who are unfamiliar with the material. The article on the Christian Bible does not have a footnote on every sentence because those who read it are already familiar with the Bible enough to know that the content is supported by its source text. I would ask that if this uncourced template is to remain, that those who are placing this blanket statement support their claim with at least a single instance of material which conflicts with the source text. -Scott P. 12:07, 6 July 2006 (UTC)

How about starting with the first sentence. It reads "A Course in Miracles (sometimes referred to as ACIM or simply the Course) is a self-study book of "spiritual psychotherapy" or spiritual transformation. The author of the book Dr. Helen Schucman, asserts that she "scribed" the book with the assistance of Dr. William Thetford under divine inspiration. It was first published prior to 1976 and has sold over 1.5 million copies worldwide in 15 different languages." It cites The Translation Program as it's source. www.acim.org is owned by the organization publishing this version of the book. That makes this source a primary source. According to WP:RS, "We may not use primary sources whose information has not been made available by a reliable publisher. See Misplaced Pages:No original research and Misplaced Pages:Verifiability". About the source itself, on that page (currently) there is no mention of Schucman or Thetford. There isn't any mention in the text about "sometimes referred to as ACIM", and the only "ACIM" written on that page is the trademark for the particular version of the book written by that publisher. There is no mention about X-million number of copies, etc., etc. Ste4k 12:31, 6 July 2006 (UTC)
Unless the publisher's reputation has been tarnished, it is generally accepted practice in the publishing world to accept a publisher's statement at face value a factual statement of the number of copies it has published. If you might be able to somehow significantly tarnish the reputation of FIP, then perhaps its accounting of the number of copies published might be considered worthy of question. Otherwise we will have to begin deleting references to the number of books published by every book whose publisher you happen not to believe. Nobody but a publisher normally keeps such records. How else do you suppose they are normally tracked? Unfortunately someone seems to have recently deleted the article on FIP so it now becomes rather difficult to track them. Go figure. (BTW, FIP is the publsher, not acim.org.)

Well, yes, that's fine, but the point here is that there is no publisher's statement made about anything in that sentence. The idea behind having a resource is that we copy what the resource says instead of just listing them as a reference. If the resource says, "Joe at worms" then we write "Joe ate worms". About tarnishing any reputation, that isn't the point at all. And about accepted practices in the publishing world, this is Misplaced Pages and the accepted practices are covered by what we call "policy and "guidelines" since those came about over a long period of time and through the process of consensus. About people keeping records of how many books were published, I think you missed the point there. Publisher's Weekly magazine has a statement about the number of books among other things for example. They are a secondary source. Do you see how that's different? About the article on FIP, it hadn't any sources at all which is one of the reasons it was deleted. The only references which it had on the bottom were "See Also" references that pointed to this article here, and other articles which were also unsourced except for pointing to this article here. FIP and ACIM.ORG are the same entity. FACIM is also the same entity. This is known. Having the same board of directors, as well as sharing the same registered trademark "ACIM®" , etc., makes anything from either of those web sites primary sources. Ste4k 20:51, 8 July 2006 (UTC)
So you are saying that unless Publisher's Weekly (or some other such publication) repeats the actual publisher's information on their site, then the information is unrepeatable on Wiki? Uhm, no, what I am saying here is that there is no publisher's statement made about anything in that sentence. Publisher's Weekly magazine has a statement about the number of books. If you need to know how they arrived at that number, you should ask their research department. It is highly likely that they were given proprietary information that they were able to verify at two sources, and would probably be under a non-disclosure agreement regarding that content. But you can contact them and find out how they arrived at that number for yourself if it interests you. Non-disclosure agreements usually have an expiration date attached. About the policies on Misplaced Pages, though, you can read them for yourself at WP:VER, WP:NOR, and WP:RS. Pay close attention to the definitions of primary, secondary, and tertiary sources. I have now listed the source of the publication number in the actual section to let the readership judge on its own. Let's be plain here, Scott, the first sentence is only one sentence in this article. Every sentence needs to be verifiable. Everything that isn't verifiable is simply opinion and original research. Original research can be deleted by any editor at any time. I am hoping that you will want to improve this article rather than squabble about it. If you haven't made yourself familiar with the policies in this regard WP:NOR, WP:VER, WP:RS, etc., I highly suggest that you read them. I am not the only editor on WP and I think that many people have been overly generous with their time and efforts considering the size of the information in this article. I believe this topic is different. ACIM is both a book and a religious movement. There are no reliable secondary sources. In many ways it is like the beginning of Christianity. There is much controversy and conflict. There are differences in interpretation of ACIM. Some organizations, although "non-profit", have used ACIM to turn their founders and their families into millionaires.

I believe the introductory section needs to be re-written. Most that are very familar with ACIM know that Helen did not consider herself to be the author. She considered herself (as indicated in the Urtext version itself) to be an equal and co-scribe with William Thetford. -- Who123 22:57, 11 July 2006 (UTC)

True, it is difficult to verify "most". Like many religious works the origins are obscure and filled with controversy. To the best of my knowledge, Helen never considered herself the author of ACIM. This arose out of the interaction of both Helen and Bill. I believe it would be true to say that ACIM was "co-written" by both Helen and Bill. The words originated from an inner voice within Helen's mind that she identified as not her own but from Jesus Christ. Those close to her did not believe she could have written the work. The work itself is in the first person and clearly identifies himself as the historical Jesus. The question of authorship came to the forefront during the major legal case of the Course. Due to pre-copyright distribution the original 1975 copyright was overturned as were the servicemark on "A Course in Miracles" and trademark on "ACIM". This places the publication date as somewhere between 1973 and 1975. -- Who123 03:57, 12 July 2006 (UTC)
There are actually some secondary sources that have been found during the interim of this conversation. Also, what is said and by what source is crucial to being a secondary source. For example, although we have already determined that the sources written by Ken Wapnick should not be cited for any statements except (as a primary source) about Wapnick, FIP, or FACIM, anything that Ken Wapnick has said about the NCCFE/EA group, or the JCIM group, or others, would qualify as a secondary source, "as long as it was previously published". We also have one small mention in Publisher's weekly to date, and there are probably a few others out there in the press discussing either this topic on the whole, or various factions of this topic. I think Will Beback will probably agree that until this article has sources and content that refer to the NCCFE/EA group, that this particular article hasn't anything to do with the other groups. I believe that at least two other editors involved in the NCCFE/EA articles would probably be happy to associate this article with that group, because they have insisted on doing so several times prior even though this article currently hasn't anything to do with that other topic matter. I believe there is a problem in this article with requiring secondary sources. There has been a great deal of friction between FACIM/FIP and many others. FACIM/FIP has used the wealth and legal power of their invalid copyright to file and threaten lawsuits against many including Marianne Williamson, Robert Perry, and EA. Much of this appears to be an attempt to suppress both the truth and open discussion. This has resulted (until very recently with the end of the major lawsuit) in everything being skewed by FACIM/FIP. Because of the lawsuit between FACIM/FIP and EA I do not think they can act as secondary sources. We are dealing with much more than a book here. We are dealing with a religious movement in its infancy. I believe the best that we can do is to continue the discussions to provide the reader of the article with the most useful information that we can as reached by consensus. -- Who123 16:35, 13 July 2006 (UTC)

According to at least three editors currently working on Charles Buell Anderson the exact opposite opinion is true and that articles should be written that have only negative opinion in the references supplied. Their opinion is particularly based on the argument that this current article is fairly representative of all and everything to do with the title "A Course in Miracles". I think that over a period of a month which has been allotted to the editors of this article, that during the interim this article is causing confusion and leading to disruption due to its name. I will suggest that this article be moved/renamed to "A Course in Miracles by Foundation of Inner Peace". Ste4k 17:28, 13 July 2006 (UTC)

I'd seriously like to put the entire subject matter behind me. Until doing serious research on this topic, I hadn't ever heard of it, still haven't ever seen any of it mentioned in the media in any serious way, doubt that it has any real significance to world wide politics, religion, society, charities, wars, or anything else that is going to significantly change the planet any time soon. The fact that it does require an enormous amount of research indicates only that it is an obscure topic. That so many editors have so many different viewpoints on the matter only indicates that nobody can reach consensus and that the subject matter is ambiguous. The article along with its neighbors has caused significant amounts of abusive remarks to me for simply researching the matter which indicates that the presence of the article causes more problems than it serves to provide any information. Providing information is the primary objective of the encyclopedia. Consensus is the primary means that this encyclopedia changes it's content. And disambiguity is the primary tool for accomplishing that goal. Ste4k 21:06, 13 July 2006 (UTC)

There appears to be basic error in this discussion. That basic error is insisting that all sources are secondary. Please read Misplaced Pages:No_original_research. I point out these two paragraphs:

Original research that creates primary sources is not allowed. However, research that consists of collecting and organizing information from existing primary and/or secondary sources is, of course, strongly encouraged. All articles on Misplaced Pages should be based on information collected from published primary and secondary sources. This is not "original research"; it is "source-based research", and it is fundamental to writing an encyclopedia.
In some cases, where an article (1) makes descriptive claims the accuracy of which is easily verifiable by any reasonable adult without specialist knowledge, and (2) makes no analytic, synthetic, interpretive, or evaluative claims, a Misplaced Pages article may be based entirely on primary sources (examples would include apple pie or current events), but these are exceptions.

Although primary and/or secondary sourcing is very important, much of this material falls under paragraph two above. I think some of this insistence on sourcing is anal or compulsive. Sorry to burst your bubble, but, even though you have tried to compare the Course to the bible before, there isn't any possible way that you could convince me that it relates to Mom's Apple Pie. I suppose to you it rates right up there with hot-dogs and America's all-time favorite pass-time baseball, but unfortunately, there aren't any Course vendors around, and if you went to your local corner stop for gas and asked ten or fifteen strangers you met there if they had ever heard of it they would probably mistake you for a Hari Krsna imposter and give you directions to the airport. If you asked fifteen people if they'd ever heard of apple pie on the other hand, I am willing to bet that at least three of them would ask you how much you were selling it for, and the store manager would probably think you were trying to use the store to sell your merchandise. This encyclopedia is supposed to be used to present notable facts to the public at large. In order to achieve that goal it relies on facts that are already previously published by reliable sources, for example, the press, the media, scholarly works and certainly not the least of all court records. There is a two part concern that must be addressed for anything to be included. Sure we can use a primary source, but there are clear restrictions on what may and may not be used from a primary source and that appears to be a point that you refuse to understand. Pulling out one single part of the policies to refute another part doesn't make any sense. The policies on WP are not contradictory. Ste4k 03:24, 17 July 2006 (UTC)

There is a difference between common knowledge in general and common knowledge in a specific field. Please see the Internet example above. It is common knowledge that the Internet is often referred to as the Net for most familiar with the Net. For those who are not it is simply explained in the Internet article that the internet is often referred to as the Net. This does not require a source. In physics, if someone were to mention "string theory" most would have at least a general idea about string theory. In the general population I suspect most would be able to say little if asked to explain their understanding of string theory. Almost everyone familiar with The Course knows that ACIM is an abbreviation for A Course in Miracles. As mentioned, a common search engine gave over 1 million hits on "ACIM".

In terms of this article in general, as has already been stated, there are few (if any) unbiased secondary sources. Much of the sourcing for this article will require primary sourcing (ACIM itself) as well as the best secondary sources we can find.--Who123 15:38, 17 July 2006 (UTC)

Initial Templates

Although much work still needs to be done, it appears to me that the article, as it is now, is no longer "unbalanced". In addition, the article size is very close to the maximum suggested size. I suggest that the "unbalanced" and "verylong" initial tags for the article can now be removed.

I have read the rest of this discussion. Most of the issues have been addressed. The remaining issues are being addressed although your obstructive tactics waste valuable time. Issues addressed in your own unilateral opinion do not in any way arrive at a consensus to the other people involved in working on this article. It's fine for you to have your opinion, but by blatantly refusing other people to have their opinion, it looks more overbearing than anything else. Are you trying to convince me that I haven't the right to work on Wiki, have an opinion, and that you are self-declaring yourself in charge of everyone elses opinion? Is there some sort of aesthetic problem that you feel a maintenance template presents that you simply can't bear because of considerable amount of bias? Are you in some kind of hurry to remove maintenance tags before other editors from the WP at large are allowed to come and help work on this article? Introduction

The fact that "A Course in Miracles" is sometimes referred to as "ACIM" or simply "The Course" is not original research. It is common knowledge for anyone who is at all familiar with ACIM. We are using these abbreviations in our discussions here. I have already posted this in these discussions and it was deleted. All you are saying is that based on the opinion of several editors here on WP that the statement is true. That in itslef is pure original research by defintion. I will mark the section disputed. Consider the section disputed. Adding a tag would be confusing. Also keep in mind that the statement itself about "ACIM" is confusing since an equal statement could be made "Foundation for Inner Peace" is sometimes referred to as "ACIM" by the same reasoning as you suggest for the statement; i.e. original research. This is a quote from another WP article: "The Internet (also known simply as the Net)..." Internet. Do you consider this OR as well? I and two other editors do not consider this OR. Once again, it is common knowledge for anyone who is at all familiar with ACIM. The "Foundation for Inner Peace" is not referred to as "ACIM", it is referred to as "FIP". I am finding your remarks and edits pedantic (unduly emphasizing minutiae) and obstructive. You have stated that you have little or no knowledge of ACIM. The problem is not the WP policies. The problem is that you are applying them in an obsessive manner that obstructs rather than advances the article. Initial Image

I believe the initial image should be removed. This is simply an ad for one variation of one version of ACIM. I do not believe the article should begin with advertising for FIP and FACIM. ACIM is available for free as public domain on the internet. This second edition of the FIP version has material that is not public domain including an outline numbering system and additional sections. I think there are at least two other book covers that would make the point clearer rather than lose one version we already have. Maybe setting the book covers side by side would do better to get the point across. Ste4k 04:34, 13 July 2006 (UTC)

Is an image of the written form of the book helpful to the article? If so, then I think one image from each publisher would be preferable (with a smaller image and caption) so that the article is unbiased. -- Who123 16:13, 13 July 2006 (UTC)

Actually an image of the written form of the book would need to be a stack of black three ring binders, if we made such a picture it would only be original research since the picture wasn't previously published. The image that this article has now is basically the same thing, since it has never been previously published. But also, this article should probably be renamed to "A Course in Miracles by Foundation of Inner Peace" since the name it has right now is causing a considerable amount of ambiguity and because the only version mentioned in this article and its references is the version by that publisher. Does Wiki have legal permission to publish this image? If there is any uncertainty on this the image should be removed now until this is resolved. I believe that the image as is adds bias to the article. I do not agree that the article should be renamed as suggested. This would induce tremendous bias. Let me start a discussion on the versions. If the article were renamed, then the main entry "Course in Miracles" could be given a dismabiguation page which is a normal practice on WP. Each version of the book could then have it's own article, and edit wars caused by ambiguity could be avoided in the future. It's seems like a very fair and neutral suggestion. Please do not rename the article. There is not enough variation in the versions to warrant separate articles at this time. Doing this would only increase the division that arose during the "Course war". This is my personal opinion but I believe that this article should mainly help someone not familiar with ACIM to answer the question, "What is "A Course in Miracles"?" As this page is refined it may be useful to have breakout articles relating to Course versions, the philosophy of ACIM, etc. Who123 19:07, 13 July 2006 (UTC)
What exactly is the "Course War"? The fact that editors cannot agree on things only further substantiates that the name is highly ambiguous. I am still completely neutral on all of this, but the ambiguity seems to be the underlying problem. Some editors think X, and others think Y. Either an disambiguity page that seperates the topic should be done, or, the article should include all of the various factions and be sperated by sub-topic. In either instance the ambiguity that appears to be the base problem would be eliminated. As an encylopedia we should be striving to resolve ambiguity rather than become victims of it ourselves. It is quite common that editors (and people in general) do not agree. Perhaps we should focus on this topic of discussion - the initial image. I think keeping the image places Wiki at legal risk as it may violate FIP's copyright. It introduces bias at the beginning of the article. Course Versions

Please allow me to present some initial information on the formation of The Course and the three primary versions to the best of my ability. This can then act as a platform for discussion. The Course began as a cooperative venture between two well respected psychologists. Helen began to hear an inner voice. She called Bill and they both devoted much of their lives over many years to bring the "dictation" of this inner voice to paper. Most of the "dictation" was written by Helen in notebooks with her own style of shorthand. She then either typed it herself or read it to Bill who typed it. It appears that some of the material Helen spoke to Bill and he typed this directly.

The earliest typed version that is known to exist is called the Urtext. The Urtext itself appears to have been derived from at least three earlier typed versions. Some of this material may be lost to time. ACIM consists of three parts: Text, Workbook, and Manual for Teachers. The vast majority of differences are in the Text.

In the Urtext "the voice" designated Bill as the editor. In late 1972 Bill finished the editing of all three parts. The Text portion was found in the A.R.E. Library and has come to be known as the HLC (Hugh Lynn Cayce) version. This is perhaps a poor name as HLC had no known input to the material although he is mentioned in it. Bill added Chapter and Section breaks and deleted material.

In early 1973, I believe, Ken Wapnick was given a copy. He further edited the material to form the Criswell version and subsequently the FIP first edition often known as the "blue book". There may have been other variations involved. The second edition contains additional material and an outline numbering system which is still under a valid copyright.

Since then there are now multiple variations both in print and online that stem from these three primary versions.

Despite much sometimes heated debate, all three versions seem to contain the essential material of The Course. Some prefer one version and some use all three.--Who123 18:55, 13 July 2006 (UTC)

There appears to be confusion regarding versions of ACIM. I believe the article should address this in a short topic. I suggest this as a starting point:


There are three primary versions of The Course. These are the Urtext, the HLC, and the FIP first edition. There are also multiple variations of these both written and "electronic". The Urtext is the earliest publicly known version. Within the Urtext Dr. William Thetford was the designated editor. The HLC is the version edited by Bill and completed in late 1972. He added the organization of the chapters and sections. Unfortunately, original material was removed. The FIP first edition was a further edit of the HLC by Ken Wapnick. Some material was changed and some was deleted. In addition, FIP released a second edition. This second edition includes additional material and an outline numbering system. The additional material and the outline numbering system remain under copyright.


There has been a long discussion here on sourcing. Sourcing for this addition includes the works themselves as well as the already referenced "Absence from Felicity".--Who123 18:51, 14 July 2006 (UTC)

You haven't mentioned any version from the Endeavor Academy at all. I suggest that you look at that article and check it for accuracy. Apparently it is pointing to this article on the premise that the version of "A Course in Miracles" written by Charles Anderson is directly related to these three versions. In my opinion, that link is ambiguous and misleading. If you disagree, then you might want to add the category cult to this article as it is listed in the other. Ste4k 03:38, 15 July 2006 (UTC)

I just noted your addition and although it reads well, etc. It is completely unsourced. I am removing it until such a time that you can supply references. The EA version is new. It is included in "There are also multiple variations of these both written and "electronic"." I see no point in this article in discussing all of the derivations from the three primary versions. If this is thought to be useful then a separate article can be written on this. I appreciate the complement about the addition reading well. The addition was sourced from the primary works and the existing references. Because there is confusion about these primary versions, I believe it is an important addition. I do not appreciate your removing it. Public Domain

I am not a lawyer but it appears to me that the Criswell and the first edition of the FIP version are public domain. It also appears that the HLC is public domain. I suspect the Urtext is public domain as well but Wapnick does have a copyright filed on it c. 1990. Personally, I do not believe that this copyright would stand under a court challenge. Needs splitting

The article probably needs splitting into A Course in Miracles (book) and A Course in Miracles (movement); the book can be described neutrally without reference to the movement, the movement would be a suitable merge target for a lot of material which AfD seems to think should be merged rather than given its own (largely uncited) treatment. It seems to me that the movement of students that this book has generated is inseparably related to the book itself, and that as such, any article about the movement would need to have an in depth treatment of the evolution of the book within it. To try to discuss the movement without such an in depth treatment would result in an incomplete article. The book states that it is intended as a self study guide. Nowhere does the book state that it was written with any intention of starting a movement. Therefore it seems to me that even the use of the term movement becomes possibly confusing or possibly even controversial when attempting to describe the majority of the students of this book. The majority of those who study this text have no formal organization to which they belong, but prefer to gather only to read and directly discuss the text itself. To attempt to define the dynamics of such a group without directly discussing the text in detail would seem to me to be rather difficult and conterproductive. Actually that is pretty much my point. The book says it's a self-study guide, but people like the Endeavor Academy have turned it into a social network and more of a belief system or religious sect. The Bible and Christianity are separate too. A bit more significant, of course, and a bit more widely discussed in secondary sources, hence a larger treatment. You are certainly correct that there is a major difference between the Bible and Christianity. But in so far as I know, the majority of the students of ACIM could be described in a single sentence as those who consider ACIM as their primary written source of spiritual wisdom and inspiration, but who, in accordance with the recommendations of this book, have no official membership organization. Does this sentence deserve its own article?
I agree that notable splinter groups like Endeavor Academy would seem to deserve separate mention here, but I don't see why the majority of the rather un-notable intentionally unorganized students of ACIM would deserve their own separate article.

According to two of the versions at my disposal, the first statements are:
  1. "T-in.1. This is a course in miracles. 2 It is a required course. 3 Only the time you take it is voluntary. 4 Free will does not mean that you can establish the curriculum. 5 It means only that you can elect what you want to take at a given time.

I don't actually believe that quoting the source in this regard is applicable towards it's notability, but be that as it may, it is referencing itself, but as you point out, it does not actually say this according to these two versions. Use of the acronyn "ACIM" is advertising.

This acronym "ACIM" is a registered trademark. Judith Skutch Whitson and her husband started the Foundation of Para-Sensory Investigations, Inc. (FPI) in October of 1971. She was a teacher and lecturer at New York University on the science of the study of consciousness and parapsychology. She was introduced to Schucman, Thetford and Wapnick in May of 1975. In June of 1976, the Foundation for Parasensory Investigation changed its name to The Foundation of Inner Peace due to Schucman's distaste for the former name. Dr. Schucman died in 1981. Two years later control of the copyright was essentially transferred to the Foundation for "A Course in Miracles" (FACIM) in 1983 when it was organized by Wapnick, the Board of Directors being himself, Judy Skutch Whitson, and her husband Robert Skutch. Due to a suit by Penguin, and TFIP, brought against the Church of the Full Endeavor for teaching students with the manuscript they had obtained, it was found that because of preliminary distribution of the work that the contents of the book are considered public domain. There is absolutely no reason to advertise on this encyclopedia.

Certainly Burger King meets this criteria, but are you saying that the use of any trademarked acronym in Wiki should automamatically be treated as POV or advertising per Wiki policy? I still don't understand. Are you're saying that this article is primarily advertising, even though it makes no attempt to sell anything? Admittedly it does attempt to explicate ACIM, but advertising and explication are two different things. This is a completely inaccurate statement. If you were do to any research on the topic, you would find that all sides refer to "A Course In Miracles" as "ACIM". I became acquainted with "A Course In Miracles" in the bookstore of my New Thought church. The church categorized "A Course In Miracles" on a shelf that had the sign "ACIM" at the top. The use of "ACIM" in this article would certainly not constitute advertising. It would instead constitute an attempt to succinctly describe a book with a relatively long title. Even if using "ACIM" were indeed advertising, I am aware of no Misplaced Pages guideline that says that one cannot refer to the advertising slogans or acronyms of given products, copyrighted or not.

Further, I may state that this is an unsourced claim by Ste4k. I see no advertisements for ACIM anywhere, least of all ones that use the the acronym "ACIM". If you look here you will note the sources for my statement. If you look at the source code at the web site here you will see the statement, "All contents Copyright 1995, Foundation for A COURSE IN MIRACLES. All Rights Reserved. A COURSE IN MIRACLES (ACIM) is a registered service mark and trademark of the Foundation for A Course in Miracles.". If you look at that page on the top you will see the tradmark being used. This web site has the same board of directors according to the court documents listed here on top of this sub-topic. The acronym is listed approximately seventy times (to date) in the article. Please see a sift of the page. Unless this document intends to give equal time to the other books by other authors using this same title, then how can it be considered to be fair use of that trademark rather than advertising? I believe that repeating the affiliated brand name upwards of 70 times in an article is a reasonable reason to claim advertising, and as stated previously, since that particular acronym is unnecessary and can easily be replaced with something else it appears that only a biased opinion would insist on using it. The use of abbreviations is common in language. Sometimes multiple abbreviations are used. I think these two statements are common knowledge. If one doubts that ACIM is a common abbreviation simply go to a common search engine and type ACIM. Its use is extremely common in multiple ways and by multiple organizations. A.C.I.M. is also used. It is not as easy and quick so it is not my preference but it is another abbreviation. Sometimes The Course, the Course, or the course is used. This is simply common knowledge just as the net is used for the internet. Please see the other discussion on this. Pruning

This article is in urgent need of serious pruning. Many sections of it read as a sermon. Where are the secondary sources of commentary, form which we can distill the encyclopaedic content? Misplaced Pages is not a place to proselytise, we are here to document what the external world understands of this concept and has written in reliable authoritative sources. "Pruned" material

I believe we have lost much valuable information as a result of JzG's "pruning" efforts. We should start an "A Course In Miracles (doctrine)" page for the fruit JzG dislikes. If it were not for JzG's positive intentions, I would call the result vandalism, so let's do better. I agree that there is much redundant information on this page, but the article is shifting too heavily toward contrasting ACIM with Christianity. A proper article on ACIM should describe its doctrine first, as it was meant to stand on it's own merit, and only afterward highlight obvious differences betwen ACIM teachings and non-ACIM interpretations of the standard interpretation of Christianity. JzG is assuming that a proper interpretation of ACIM is as Christian supplemental material, rather than the Christian Bible being supplemental ACIM material. He is not "playing the game", so to speak, and so long as he doesn't, this article can't be neutral, for playing ACIM's game is what it means to be charitable, and charity is what it means to be neutral. — Antireconciler 21:16, 5 July 2006 (UTC)

Only if it can be sourced from reliable secondary sources. The major problem with it was that the whole thing was completely unreferenced and read like a dissertation or homily. Misplaced Pages is not a soapbox, it's an encyclopaedia distilled from the body of knowledge as presented in reliable, independent secondary sources. Read WP:NOR, WP:V, WP:NPOV. The problem is not with the truth, if truth it be, but with the fact that it is funcitonally indistinguishable from opinion. So, do start woith citations to reputable seocndary sources outside the movement. Commentary in standard texts on comparitive religion, references from psychological texts and so on. Understandable. Surely Misplaced Pages is not a soapbox, nor should it provide incredible information, so I can understand your reasons for wanting to remove it. No one should be lead into misinformation at the hands of article writers who write to validate their own opinions instead of from a true objective desire to spread genuine knowledge. Such actions bring down the credibility of the entire encyclopedia, and thus its effectiveness.
So, it's understandable to want to quote only reliable secondary sources outside the movement, for these will be objective, able to see outside ACIM's world and look in safely, untouched. And in ACIM's world, only the perfectly inclusive is true, and as such, to stand outside the movement and look in as an outsider ... well, this will be necessarily to miss the point, for this perspective is an impossibility for ACIM, and so ACIM will naturally be misperceived by a view from nowhere that tries to say anything meaningful about it. For one cannot understand by standing on the outside looking in objectively. If ACIM IS true, then the man on the outside who is inside not knowing it is speaking as if he knew what it was like to be inside but cannot for the fundemental reason that the error he makes cannot be contained as if it were an isolated instance by the principle of explosion, which is a natural consequence of the law of noncontradiction. Where Misplaced Pages has demanded an outside, separate, objective view, must the system fail where separation means nothing, for no concept is more critical for ACIM to make any sense at all, again, by the aforementioned principles.
Where separation means nothing, then, allow us to plea an exception to Misplaced Pages's rules, which must fail in such instances. Perhaps if we post a disclaimer in the "main tenets" section that the information is in principle unverifiable and unintelligible by objective outside means, we will be able to post valuable information of such a nature on Misplaced Pages. Otherwise, we have done ourselves a disservice. Despite the demise of logical positivism, many will still believe that scientific, objective verifiability is what it means for a statement to be meaningful. These people do themselves a disservice.

I'm not sure I understand you correctly Antireconciler. I haven't ever read any of the books with this title, but I can read. I have found several secondary sources about various things to do with this specific version of this title. One does not need, in fact, it is in my opinion detrimental to the process to know anything at all about the subject matter as an editor. If a verifiable source is found, then it's quite an easy task to add content to an article. Just repeat what that source says. *poof* voila! Everything just falls into place. Nobody expects that to be rocket science, of course, BUT the good part is, there are many, many editors on WP that will come along and clear out the POV, the misspailings, the awkward grammar, do cite checks, rearrange for aesthetic quality, etc., etc. Anything else that doesn't come from a verifiable secondary source, is just opinion and belongs in the opinion bin under the heading original research. Science does have its role. It is does not encompass all of academic study which is usually considered to fall both within art and science. Rationale for proposed ACIM article group restructure

Apparently user User:Ste4k has decided that this article ultimately needs to be deleted and replaced with her own article at A Course in Miracles (book), and also a second article which she apparently plans to create later on to be titled something like A Course in Miracles (movement). This user has also nominated multiple ACIM related articles for deletion, some deletions of which have succeeded. A discussion about User:Ste4k's plans to effect these changes is under way at Nomination to delete Ste4k's article on ACIM (book only). The input of editors of this page at that article would be very much appreciated. ACIM is surrounded by bias, conflict, and heated differences of opinion; as are most religious discussions. I do not believe that any of us is without bias or has a neutral point of view. I actually haven't seen much bias, except perhaps in citing primary sources. I haven't read any of these versions. I have read the court cases and seen a lot of web sites which are frankly all involved in selling one or another version of the book in one way or another. The first time I had ever heard of the Course was about three weeks ago. I am sure that there are several other editors that are equally as neutral. I was not speaking of bias here but the various forms of bias in the ACIM community. Not all of the web sites are involved in selling anything. The larger ones are and they can afford larger websites and more advertising. I think it is useful to have input from those who are familiar with ACIM and the events surrounding it. Referring to factions

The article section on organization should be rewritten. The FACIM is not the organization of ACIM (the acronym "ACIM" is not the FAICM's trademark as it has been revoked by the U.S. Patent Office). FACIM is only one organization involved with publication of ACIM. It is highly controversial. This section reads like an ad for the FACIM which has turned its founder and family into millionaires. ACIM is used extensively by the group "Foundation of Inner Peace (FIP). FACIM also uses this term extensively. The acronym is used in both of their web-sites where they share the same trademark as well as it being a portion of their domain names. They both share common members on their Boards of Directors. They were co-defendents in a trial over copyright issues. In the media, the works are commonly referred to as "The Course". In the court proceedings, the works are also referred to as either "The Work", or "the Course". If you look below in this article at the references, you will notice that most of them are primary references and associated with ACIM/FIP/FACIM/Wapnick/Skutch/Skutch Whitson which are basically one entity and group. According to WP policy and guidelines, we can only use primary sources for statements that they make about themselves, specifically in regard to their notability. This means that the references being used written by Ken Wapnick and Robert Skutch cannot be used to source any material in this article except to speak about FIP, FACIM, or themselves personally. It also means that the version of the work published by FIP called "A Course in Miracles" cannot be used as a source for any material in this article unless the quoted citations are speaking about the book itself for it's own notability, or about FIP, or FACIM. If there is a preface in the book that speaks toward the notability of the book or the publisher, then that content can be used. I just double checked: The Patent and Trademark Office database shows that both phrases are no longer trademarked. The only relevant trademark still in force is a design combining the phrase "ACIM" with a logo, which is registered to Foundation for A Course in Miracles. Yes, and as I pointed out in that discussion, two things, 1) The index that you used to call up that design was "ACIM". 2) both the FIP (who uses acim.org as their domain name) and the FACIM who both share common members on their boards of directors use the acronym ACIM as brand name and also mark this acronym with the ® registered trademark symbol even in places where they are not granted the right to do so. Basically, they use ACIM as their face value brand name regardless of the limitations set out by their registration. The issue here has nothing to do with whether they are granted permission or not. These are the same groups that were publishing without rights to a copyright as proven in court. The phrase "the Course" is short and very generic, avoids any of these issues, is used by reputible secondary sources in the media, and also by the court, and there isn't any reason not to use that for shortening the title, especially when even between you and I it is clear that some controversy exists over the use of the other acronym "ACIM". If between you and I there exists this controversy, then certainly a fair number of readers in the future will feel the same way. I just used a well known search engine and received 1,080,000 hits. To avoid using ACIM continues to support the false trademark on it. If there is confusion about the legal status of "ACIM" then the article should help to resolve this confusion rather than foster it. I suggest that each of us is free to use ACIM as we wish. Your accusation about obfuscation is unfounded and appears to be personal rather than topical regarding this article. Removal of information regarding a reference is obfuscation by definition. As you mention information in this article does need a reliable resource and must pass WP:VER which states, (fyi), "Articles should contain only material that has been published by reputable sources." It refers to WP:RS which states, (fyi), "A primary source is a document or person providing direct evidence of a certain state of affairs; in other words, a source very close to the situation you are writing about. The term most often refers to a document produced by a participant in an event or an observer of that event." and also "We may not use primary sources whose information has not been made available by a reliable publisher." Therefore, failing to have any reliable source for information yields only WP:NOR original research which is by defintion: "a term used on Misplaced Pages to refer to material placed into articles by Misplaced Pages editors that has not been previously published by a reputable source." The specific publisher of this specific version of this book is "Foundation for Innner Peace" and therefore is a primary source. The only information that should be included into this article from the primary source is covered by policy (fyi) in WP:RS#Self-published_sources_in_articles_about_themselves, and as stated, must be "relevant to the notability of that group or organisation". You should be aware also, that according to policy WP:VER, (fyi), "Editors adding new material to an article should cite a reputable source, or it may be removed by any editor. The obligation to provide a reputable source lies with the editors wishing to include the material, not on those seeking to remove it." And this is why, as I stated before, in my opinion, other editors of this article, including myself, have indulged you sufficiently with patience regarding the matter of sourcing this article. Your comments appear to be personal rather than discussing the unbalanced nature of this article. Under it's current title "A Course in Miracles" it is highly ambiguous and the article only speaks of one particular version of book with such a title. The acronym "ACIM" represents only one faction of the many different factional beliefs centered around the public domain writings of Helen Schucman. That particular acronym is the index at the U.S. Patent & Trademark Office for a registered trademark used by one specific publishing group Foundation of Inner Peace (FIP) & Foundation for A COURSE IN MIRACLES (FACIM) that uses the acronym as much as possible for brand recognition. Please view the source at the homepage of FACIM where it is written "A COURSE IN MIRACLES (ACIM) is a registered service mark and trademark of the Foundation for A Course in Miracles.". These two particular organizations share common members on their Board of Directors and are associated closely enough to be co-complaintants in litigation against other groups interested in the Course. This court case shows one example of referring to the work as "Course". Please refer to pages 10-11, where one of the Board of Directors is identified by the court. The press refers to the same work as "the Course". Please see Garrett, Lynn (7 Mar2005). "'Disappearance' Appears Big Time". Publisher's Weekly. Yes, there are three primary versions. These are commonly known as the Urtext, the HLC, and the Wapnick version. There are also multiple variations of these both written and "electronic". The Urtext is the earliest publicly known version. Within the Urtext Bill Thetford was the designated editor by "the voice" rather than Helen. The HLC is the version edited by Bill and completed in late 1972. He added the organization of the chapters and sections. Unfortunately, he removed important material. The last version was a further edit by Ken Wapnick after studying the HLC for only one year (today this length of study would be considered that of a beginning student). He deleted more material and changed much of what remained. I do not have a favored version. I use all three. My complaint is that the image is nothing more than advertising for the most limited of the three versions. It is also deceptive as it suggests that this is the only form both in print and available for free on the internet as public domain material. For myself, I can't tell yet how many there are in number, but the contents are significantly different. Between versions, there are edits, omissions, additions, etc., so that the basic underlying flow is there, but in our own WP lingo, the best way to state it, is that there were several POV forks on the original work. According to the court, the work put forth by Schucman and Thetford, was distributed at several stages to many people without a copyright. One of the earliest of these went to the Edgar Cayce group, and is called the HLC version. AFTER that version had been given, Ken Wapnick entered the picture and made many editorial contributions. Wapnick joined forces with Skutch, and his wife Skutch Whitson who had a corporation called the Foundation for Parasensory Investigations (FPI). They later changed the name of that group to Foundation for Inner Peace (FIP), and became board members with Wapnick in the organization he founded with them called FACIM around 1983. During the years betwen 1975 and 1983 the work was distributed to many other parties without a copyright mainly by Skutch Whitson (according to the court records). The amount of POV added before those parties themselves published is debatable, but nevertheless, this is a book that discusses changing one's mind. Therefore, in my opinion, any subtle edits, even on a subliminal basis, could have drastic different outcomes in the readership of the versions. The easy way to put it is that there are several books with several authors all under the same title that carried the legacy original work by Schucman and Thetford. Even after the court case between Penguin/FIP/FACIM and NCCFE/EA, FIP having it's copyright determined void by Federal court, modified their version again, adding a preface, numbering system, and appending another section to the end. Penguin's contract was for $2.5 million to lease the copyright for a period of five years ending in December of 2000. This contract was made between Penguin and FIP. I think you should do some more research and re-read my comments on this page. I believe that I make myself specifically clear in all regards. It is not up to me to produce for you any verifiable sources for statements that you wish to include on this page. Please refer to WP:VER#The_policy. It has already been stated that there are almost no secondary sources outside of the two groups named. That is a serious problem for Misplaced Pages. If it is genuinely true then the article should be deleted as unverifiable from reliable sources. So, what is required is references to secondary sources - reliable ones. A book search on Amazon.com, placing "A Course in Miracles" in the title bar results in 230 plus books that list ACIM in their title. I believe that at least some of these books could be considered as secondary neutral sources. Amongst these is the book by Patrick Miller. A book that has sold 1.5 million, spawned at least 230 spin offs, and yields .6 million hits in Google seems to me to be worthy of an article, and a significant article, in Wiki, written by at least some editors who have actually read the material. -Scott P. 22:58, 10 July 2006 (UTC)

I have to agree with the concerns expressed about the lack of sourcing and OR in the article. To take one of many examples:

There is no source whatsoever for this statement. The depth of presumption is mindblowing. Ignore for a minute the sloppiness in not limiting the statement to Christian theologians: How did the editor know what "most theolgians" think? It seems implausible that there would be such broad agreement on an amorphous, value-laden classification like "most radical." The entire comparisons section is completely OR. Only two of the subsections have footnotes and even these are problemmatic. The cited sources appear to support only the proposition that ACIM teaches X. The author then contrasts this to Christian teaching Y. This is a synthesis, which is still OR per WP:NOR#Synthesis_of_published_material_serving_to_advance_a_position. Any comparisons between ACIM and other religions should rely on a reliable source that compares the two. Although the original authors of this page undoubtedly worked hard to put it together, the writing process used was exactly backwards: you don't write an article on the basis of "what I know is ..." and then source it when challenged, you consult sources and then write the article on the basis of the sources. Sorry, but "more or less accurate" is a pretty low standard to shoot for. I'm sure the editors of this piece (Scott and others) have done some reading in ACIM, perhaps even a lot of reading. However, there is simply no substitute for having source material on hand when writing and citing that source material for the propositions contained in the article. A major benefit of close sourcing is that it forces a writer to discipline him/herself so that the approximations and sloppiness present in a "more or less accurate" article are eliminated. This is why citing sources is not merely "preferable," but crucial. You seem to suggest that the intended reader of an encyclopedia article (who almost by definition is not very knowledgeable about the subject of the article) should go out and do research to verify the material in the article. There are two problems with that. First, it limits the usefulness of the encyclopedia. An encyclopedia is supposed to provide people with a brief overview of a topic so that they can quickly acquaint themselves with it. If the infomation is only "more or less accurate" and the reader is forced to do further research to figure it out for him/herself which information is accurate and which is not, this convenience is lost to the reader. Second, the reader (who, remember, is a novice in the subject) won't necessarily know where to look to find the sources to verify the information in question. I am very impressed by the enthusiasm of the editors who work on this article. I am confident that this can become a great article if they follow WP:V and WP:RS. What I am suggesting is that Misplaced Pages editors should not accuse fellow editors of not doing research when they themselves have not done the research either. I am also suggesting that there is a very real difference between doing research and citing the sources of the research. They are two different issues. It's rude for the rest of you to say he didn't do research. It's also inaccurate. He has done research. What he failed to do in some instances is cite the research. (And the rest of you seem very uptight about which sources you will allow to be cited, which makes writing an article about a relatively new spiritual phenomenon very difficult.)
I am someone who has done research, and from looking at what he has written I can say that he is "more or less" accurate. You and I seem to have quite different definitions of research. (Perhaps that is the reason for our disagreement?) To clarify, WP:CITE requires that the editor who originally inserts the material in the article provide the citation. It is much easier for him/her to do so than for a later editor (who may not know all that much about ACIM to begin with) to come around and chase down a cite for some material. After all, no one wants to spend hours trying to find a cite for some proposition only to find out that it is not true. The good news is that there seems to be some work proceeding on sourcing the article.
As to your statement about people being "uptight" about sourcing, it would be helpful if you could take a look at WP:RS and suggest some sources you think are appropriate for the article. I did delete some material from what seemed to me to be an unreliable source (see below). I'm not sure that this is what you are talking about, but I invite you to look at it and see if you agree. As I have studied the material over the years, the major split in ACIM is between Ken Wapnick (FACIM) and everyone else. Now that the major court battle is over, it has been my experience that those who are very familiar with all three primary versions of ACIM do not prefer Wapnick's version and do not agree with many of his thoughts in regards to ACIM. That's a relatively inaccurate statement. Kenneth Wapnick is the president of the Foundation for A Course In Miracles, which publishes many books and has many students. All you have to do is read their website Facimoutreach.org in order to see that many people do indeed trust Wapnick and FACIM (also, check the Amazon sales rank of their many books). I agree that Wapnick has a lot of students. There would not be a split if he did not. The financial and other sources of power that Wapnick has accumulated are derived from the copyright that the U.S. Court has recently determined to be invalid. He has used that power over the years to suppress dissent through actual or threatened legal action. It is therefore not surprising that his organization (FACIM) and supporting companies such as "Fearless Books" have thrived. I suggest that the material on FACIM be deleted from the "Organization" section of the article. The FACIM is not the organization of ACIM. A short statement that ACIM does not have a formal organization would be much more accurate. Several organizations have formed around ACIM, however. Much of the study of ACIM is on an individual basis or in small groups both on and off the internet. I reiterate my suggestion that the Endeavor Academy articles be merged into this article and that the third and possibly fourth version of books under this title be fairly represented in the content. I have recently found another version of the book printed in Hungary called the "Illuminate Edition". The articles were up for deletion. The discussion is twice as long and tedious. One is a biography that, imho, hasn't any biographical information, doesn't meet WP:BIO, and is based on hair thin sources that are only complaints about the subject of the biography. I nominated it for deletion recently along with the article for the Academy, which doesn't meet WP:ORG, nor WP:CORP and is again resting only on hair thin sources all of which are basically biased against the subject. In my opinion, if the topic matter is "the Course", the subjects of these other two articles would help to balance any POV in this article on the Course, and they certainly haven't reason to exist stand alone. Also in my opinion, in order not to have this article on the Course turn into a replay of the court trial, the third and maybe other versions of the Course should also be added; i.e. in a balanced fashion. You must be looking at some other article then. This page is 32 kilobytes long, currently. There is very little if any fact in the article at all. The sources are all from the same company that produces the version of the book that is being presented. The scant few secondary resources are extremely unreliable. The article doesn't even establish why this particular version is notable in any way. The article does not address any of the other versions that have the same title, nor their etymology. There isn't any mention of any scholastic value to this work, nor is there any mention of how it has impacted society at large. Deleted material from criticism section

I deleted the following material from the criticism section:

"Other critics have noted William Thetford's connections to MKULTRA and posited that ACIM may have started as a mind control experiment but eventually took on a life of its own. Helen Schucman's reluctance to endorse the Course and her eventual descent into psychotic depression is cited as evidence that she was initially Thetford's unwitting dupe but finally came to understand the nature of the movement she had helped to initiate."

Reasons:

  1. The first cite, William Newton Thetford Professional Vita, is to Thetford's cv, not to criticism and "other critics" seems a cover for OR.
  2. The second source,A Course In Miracles (ACIM). The Miracle of Brainwashing, doesn't offer any actual analysis for the claim made. It also states that Schucman was influenced by "Jewish propaganda" growing up and that the heterodoxy of ACIM can be attributed to her being a Jew. It is just a rant, not a well-thought out criticism and it is not claimed to be the view of anybody beyond the author. JChap (Talk) 01:19, 11 July 2006 (UTC)

Example?

In the comparison section on forgivness, etc., There is a cited statement: "For example: Jesus, teaching in the 'Lord's Prayer' about forgiveness, says, "God forgives our trespasses just as we forgive (the trespasses of) those who trespass against us." This seems to be slightly inconsistent with other Biblical passages describing how we are forgiven only through "Christ's blood, even the forgiveness of sins" and the note refers to a passage in a bible: "In him we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of sins, in accordance with the riches of God's grace." This seems to be a either a very poor example, or confusing, or both. How can a statement made about a person after death based on that person's teaching be contrasted to that person's teaching using that person's own words? It seems to be rather contradictory to say that the person agrees with himself as an example of how two perspectives contradict themselves. Either way, it looks like OR using the A = True, B= True, therefor synthesis A + B = C must be true. I didn't delete it, but I think someone else should take a close look at it. The passage discusses Christian teaching, which includes both the Lord's Prayer and Ephesians (in which the cited passage is found). Most Christians would think that both are the inspired word of God, so comparing them is valid. As an aside, the passage quoted above mischaracterizes the Lord's Prayer, which is an entreaty to God and does not guarantee forgiveness from him if someone forgives other people. Suggestions For A Different Approach

It seems that if we wish to improve this article it would be better approached with a team effort rather than an adversarial one. I suggest that we agree to discuss the article from beginning to end and reach a consensus before making additional edits. We all have our strengths and weaknesses. We should be able to work together to add our strengths.

If everyone is OK with the OR template and the Introduction then perhaps we should proceed to the History. If not, perhaps we could discuss the previous items in the sections below.

The "normal" way that is done on articles like this is by moving most if not all of the content into sections for discussion. After consensus is agreed upon by several editors to include some specific piece of material, it is included into the article and nobody has any doubts or contention since consensus has already been achieved. I suggest that we archive this discussion again since it is far longer than the article and doesn't appear to be going anywhere. Why did you remove the templates that have all been explained both here in discussion as well as in the history, and not replace them with the single {{noncompliant}} template? On what basis did you remove two verified sources for this article and replace them with some personal web-site? After removing the sources, you did not remove any of the material in the article that they "might" have supported. And when adding the personal web-site, you didn't add any material to the article at all. The only thing you removed was some obvious OR. What gives? I am reverting your edits which haven't any explanation and suggest that you move questionable material here to the Discussion page in the future. I agree that the article needs to be improved particularly in sourcing and citation. I believe the original author was driven from WP because of the adversarial approach to his article. Although Scott P. has said that he does not have time to work on this article due to his upcoming wedding, I would not be surprised if he also left because of this adversarial approach. Most of us have limited time to help with WP, some more so than others. If I am going to work on this article I want it to be enjoyable where people are working together to improve the article. "Schucman and Thetford became acquainted during their tenure as psychologists at Columbia University's College of Physicians and Surgeons in New York City. In the mid-1960s, Schucman told Thetford she was taking down a spiritual message she felt she was receiving from Jesus Christ. This material developed into the book. Both Schucman and Thetford and the text itself claim that the true author was the historical Jesus, and it is written in the first person, though authorship is not attributed in the published version and the original copyright claim filed for the book lists the author as "Anonymous"."

The "Voice" directed that Thetford was in charge of the editing. After completing the original full set of notes, sometimes known as the Urtext, Thetford and Schucman then edited, rearranged some of the material, and added chapter and section headings to it.

Comparison to philosophical idealism and the New Thought Movement

the Course displays a strong orientation toward the concepts of mentalistic monism (see also philosophical monism), particularly Attributive Monism, philosophical idealism), and responsibility assumption, in its prescription that the mind and its thoughts are causally responsible for the everything in the physical world. the Course shares this outlook with the New Thought Movement, including Religious Science and Christian Science. In contrast to these belief systems, the Course focuses heavily on inner healing, as opposed to outer, physical healing, which is a consequence of the Course's complete disassociation of self-identity and limited physical bodies. Focus on outer healing over inner healing first would be similar to taking an aspirin to remove the symptoms of a far more serious problem underneath.

Some observers have noted the fact that the Course teachings have many things in common with the teachings of Christian Science, including the metaphysical appeal to a perfect, absolute, divine reality of which material existence is a distorted perception, or unhealed thought; the Idealist idea of healing or resurrection through improved thought and understanding; the subordination of imperfection as illusory; the reformulation of the Atonement; the reformulation of the Trinity; and the emphasis on God's love and forgiveness rather than eternal damnation.

One Urtext passage that was not included in the published version calls Christian Science "clearly incomplete," but praises one of the observations of Christian Science founder Mary Baker Eddy. This is Eddy's observation that while the Bible describes how Adam, while in the Garden of Eden was put into a deep sleep, nowhere does the Bible ever describe that Adam was awakened from that sleep. This same observation about Adam is also made within the pages of the Course.

On the meaning of Jesus’ incarnation

A great deal of controversy has arisen regarding the Course's teaching that, “Strictly speaking.. (it) is impossible (for) the Word (to be made flesh).””, in reference to the Biblical quote from the book of John about the relationship between God and the Christ. Some have taken this quote out of context to imply that the Course teaches that the historical Jesus was never fully human in the same sense as all other humans are. the Course does teach specifically that, “Jesus is the name of one who was a man ", however the Course also teaches that all humans are not truly the bodies that they seem to be, but that all bodies are essentially illusory. This includes Jesus’ body as well. Thus, the manner in which the Course differs sharply from traditional Christianity in its interpretation of all of the material world as being fundamentally illusory, is cause for some theological debate on the question of the nature of Jesus’ incarnation.

Aspects of the Course's Spiritual Belief System

the Course professes respect for various other spiritual methods and paths that may be used to reach the same goals it pursues. the Course describes its main benefit as saving time toward the eventual remembering of the unity of the seemingly separated parts of Christ, and cites interpersonal relationships as its special mode for doing so. The theology of the Course is decidedly Monistic in its orientation.

One striking feature of the methodology laid out in the Course is the great attention paid to the nature of the faulty belief system of the ego. the Course goes to great length to evaluate the psychological underpinnings and dynamics that support this belief system, attempting to shift one’s focus away from seeming external causes to awareness of internal states, claiming that everything we see "outside" of us actually has an internal mental cause. Accordingly, our state of peace and happiness (or lack thereof) is not caused by the state of things around us, but by our mental reactions, evaluations and judgments about things. It then describes what must be accomplished in order for one to achieve release from, and afterwards to continue to avoid a return to this belief system. Such subjects as the root causes of anger, guilt, shame, projection, denial, and dishonesty are thoroughly addressed in the Course, as well as the best methodologies that one can use to overcome such perceptual limitations. It also spends considerable time discussing the special relationships of the ego (special as in... "I don’t have what another person has" and so it’s OK not to love them or, conversely, "Another person doesn’t have what I have" and so again it’s OK not to love them), and the Holy Spirit's equivalent transformative equivalent to this, the holy relationship.

Some negative reviews

Some conservative Christian reviewers have expressed concerns that the doctrines of the Course may incorporate some cultic tendencies. Citing the theological and philosophical differences between the Course and traditional Christian theology and philosophy, such apologists have sometimes labeled the Course as heretical, counterfeit, and as possibly even demonically inspired. Some skeptical groups look askance at the material's origins in (so-called) channeling, allegedly emanating from Jesus. Some such reviewers hold that the Course's doctrines are subversive to the proper functioning of a rational society, as nowhere does the Course encourage its students to actively attempt to improve or change the world for the better, and instead the Course teaches that the material world is merely an illusion.

The Affliction of Separation

In the Course's cosmology, God the Father and Christ the Son are united in a single purpose, for God is understood as creating perfectly like Himself, sharing his whole Self with Creation, eternally and changelessly. Heaven is said to be omnipresent, but this cannot be realized without letting go of all misperception and judgement. Such cannot do the Son justice, for, according to the Course, to give is to receive, and who condemns another, seeing him as less than a Son of God Who creates only like Himself, is not spared the effect of the guilt. Who believes he can see another as capable of separating or distancing himself from God, must believe that he himself can likewise separate himself from God. Since sin and evil go against God, and going against God is impossible, the Course argues sin and evil must have never been possible. However, so long as we do not see that there are no orders or differences in sins or evils, we will will not look at our mistakes and ignorance, fearing they have separated us. If this were true, such mistakes would be unforgiveable, blameworthy, and not mere mistakes at all, but sins. Separation would render us as contradictions, according to the Course, for what goes against God is eternally at war and will never find peace. But, the Course emphasizes, contradictions are nothing at all, and none exist.

The Course claims that if we believe our reality lies somewhere between the extremes of Heaven and hell, it is only for our lack of recognition that changing the form of our thinking or or its circumstance never changes the content, for such an insane notion is the very same insane arrogance of the thought that we could have had the power to distance ourselves from God in any way.

Atonement and Healing

According to the Course, Atonement is realized in the instant we allow sin to be forgiven, for such a thought at last recognizes the true sinless nature of the Son, at last doing him justice, seeing him truly. Again, to give is to receive. Atonement is the means by which the entire "reality" of sin is undone, for we see that we had never anything to fear, and we are left only with what must be true.

The Holy Spirit is understood as the Voice of God, whose purpose is healing, so long as healing is necessary to bring us into awareness of our exceptionless union with God and the Sonship (collective humanity), so we might share in His creation and perfection. The answer to the question, "What am I?" could be said to be love, communication, reason, or perhaps light simpliciter ... these are understood as synonymous. (cf. "Thou art That")

Common Terminological Misunderstandings

Within the terminology used by the Course, the term miracle still incorporates its original meaning, but additional connotations are added. These are roughly synonymous with those usually associated with the term love. As such, the book shifts its focus towards teaching various aspects of love and its presence in one’s life.

Within the terminology used by the Course, the term ego is roughly synonymous with the term self-concept. As such, the ego as described by the Course is something which is often misinformed or confused about itself, and which by definition requires correction.

One point of note regarding the Course standard phraseology is its nearly exclusive use of masculine pronouns. Nowhere in the Course is the existence of gender treated as anything more than one of the many different temporary aspects of what the Course refers to as 'The Separation'. On at least one occasion Schucman was known to have expressed some concern about this choice of pronoun phraseology within the Course.

The introduction to A Course In Miracles briefly summarizes the Course. According to the Preface, it emphasizes the fundemental distinction that the Course draws between the real and unreal, truth and perception, and that in this proper discernment is the realization of the "peace of God."

"This is A Course in Miracles. It is a required course. Only the time you take it is voluntary. Free will does not mean that you can establish the curriculum. It means only that you can elect what you want to take at a given time. The course does not aim at teaching the meaning of love, for that is beyond what can be taught. It does aim, however, at removing the blocks to the awareness of love's presence, which is your natural inheritance. The opposite of love is fear, but what is all-encompassing can have no opposite. Popular commentators such as Oprah Winfrey and Marianne Williamson have praised the teachings of the Course as beneficial and helpful. In response to claims that the Course is a defeatist or disengaged philosophy preaching nonparticipation in the world, students of the Course point out that nowhere does the Course advise that one should drop out from society or alter one’s daily routines in any way. Admittedly the Course places primary emphasis on the development of one’s inner awareness first, before the development of any one particular external goal or cause. Still, the philosophy of the Course also stresses that by first securing a solid foundation in one’s life and a unified purpose, one is thereby enabled to then achieve far greater rewards in one's life. the Course teaches that such an inner foundation enables one to fulfill all of one’s spiritual and material needs with ease.

Differences regarding Jesus' suffering

While the Course does not specifically state whether or not Jesus suffered during the crucifixion, it does consistently teach that the knowledge and awareness of God’s love is capable of removing all pain and suffering in every psychological and/ or physical circumstance. From this teaching it can be inferred that according to the teachings of the Course, one with the awareness that the Course claims that Jesus had, would not have truly suffered, even as he was rejected and crucified. This apparent teaching of the Course is in marked contrast to the Biblical teaching found primarily in the Epistles of the New Testament, that Jesus did indeed suffer greatly during the crucifixion, and that his suffering in this was somehow necessary in order to prevent God from justly punishing the rest of mankind, being some form of a substitutionary punishment.

Theological differences

The teachings of the Course place little importance on theology, stating that "a universal theology is impossible, but a universal experience is not only possible but necessary." Still, a very definite, consistent, and unique theology can be derived from the teachings of the Course. The theology of the Course provides a radically different perspective regarding many common concepts.

Because of the Course's perspective on reality, separation, and forgiveness, the Course does not accept sin, death, or sacrifice as being real. the Course rejects the definition of sin as an evil act having unalterable consequences and necessarily deserving of punishment by God or by others. This is because under its cosmology sin exists only as an illusion or a mistake, and therefore the most logical response to it is to simply correct the mistake, rather than to give it more weight via punishment. the Course defines mistakes as mental misconceptions having no real (eternal) consequences beyond the need for correction. Accordingly, all acts of others are to be interpreted either as expressions of love, or as calls for love, and nothing more.

Death is both illusory and ultimately meaningless for the Course, because of its position that only by salvation, and not by death, do separated minds cease to believe in the illusory world of separation and return to unity in the Sonship. Sacrifice is similarly impossible for the Course because of the eternal wholeness of the Sonship. the Course thus rejects the more traditional Christian belief that Jesus's crucifixion was meant as a sacrificial proxy in payment for the sins of mankind. Instead the Course explains the crucifixion as a necessary part of the lesson of the resurrection. As such it is a part of an amazing demonstration of the invulnerability of the spirit and of love.

The Holy Trinity of most Christian denominations is present in the Course, but the definitions that the Course uses for the Son, and for the Holy Spirit are somewhat different from most traditional Christian definitions. The Son, or Christ, is the unity of all of God’s creation, rather than being synonymous with Jesus only, and thus encompasses all of God's children. The Holy Spirit is the Voice for God and the means given to the seemingly separated (yet in reality, united) minds of God's Sonship to first remember and then to return to their natural inheritance of unity with God. The Holy Spirit is the aspect of God the Creator that understands the world we live in. The Holy Spirit is aware of the perceptions of people, and is simultaneously aware of the knowledge of God (Heaven's version of perception). The Holy Spirit is the aspect of God which leads us back home to Heaven, as it sees clearly the way back home, which is where God would have us be.

The teachings of the Course about how the world will one day end (or the eschatology of the Course) differ significantly from most traditional Christian eschatologies. the Course makes only one prediction regarding the future. the Course predicts that the Atonement (when all seemingly separated minds have recognized their unity as Christ) will require millions of years to complete. In the Course's counterpart to the Biblical prediction of the Apocalypse as expressed in the book of Revelation, the Course teaches that the illusory material world will not be tumultuously destroyed by fire, famine, and pestilence, but instead that it “will simply cease to seem to be,” once it has fulfilled its true purpose of enabling the Atonement. It will then be gently replaced in our awareness by the real world of God's eternal love. Should one interpret the apocalyptic symbolism of the 'lamb' ruling over the 'beast' as portrayed in the book of Revelation, as the power of peace, gentleness and innocence, reigning over the powers of war, brutality, and sin, then this particular symbolism might be considered to be consistent with the teachings of the Course.

Regarding the question of reincarnation, although the Course does contain passages that would seem to imply the likelihood of the existence of reincarnation, nowhere does it unequivocally state it as fact. In comparison to Biblical statements about reincarnation, this is actually a less firm endorsement of it than some of those who adhere to a belief in reincarnation would claim can be found the Bible. These adherents to this belief in reincarnation point to the Biblical description of the origins of John the Baptist as found in the Gospel of Matthew, which states that "John is Elijah". These adherents to this belief assert that if this Biblical assertion is to be taken literally, then it can only mean that John the Baptist was the reincarnation of Elijah. (Most Christians do not accept this interpretation of this verse.) the Course neither directly supports, nor does it directly deny the possibility of reincarnation. Instead it attempts to focus one's energies on gaining a fuller awareness of the present moment, to the exclusion of concerns for the past or for the future.

The preface of the Course advises that:

"(the Course) is not intended to become the basis for another cult. Its only purpose is to provide a way in which some people will be able to find their own Internal Teacher."

The book states that religion is best when it is practiced at the internal, personal level, as an act directly between a person and God, or another person. Accordingly, no central organization or authority exists within the Course that is fully analogous to the central authority structure found in most other spiritual belief systems. Neither does any system of formalized membership, or membership tracking exist amongst the majority of the students of the Course.

"Freedom cannot be learned by tyranny of any kind, and the perfect equality of all God's Sons cannot be recognized through the dominion of one mind over another."

The teachings of the Course also make it clear that anyone who would 'teach' the Course must also be able to 'learn' from each person he or she meets, because teaching and learning are understood as synonymous. This egalitarian type of teaching is found consistently throughout the material and appears to contrast sharply with most contemporary interpretations of the Christian Bible. Compared to most other young spiritual movements, the teachings of the Course are relatively uncontroversial.

Most theologians agree that some of the most radical spiritual principles first introduced by the historical Jesus include:

  • Jesus' teaching about radical forgiveness.
  • Jesus' radical reformulation of the old Jewish law to highlight the need for 'brotherly love' to mean neighbor-as-self.
  • Jesus' teaching regarding the parental relationship between all men and "God the Father".

Despite these three radical departures made in Jesus’ teachings from all prior religions, many Christians have noted that the Bible provides precious few details about what exactly was meant by the teaching of these three new spiritual principles. Some passages in the Bible regarding these principles appear to be slightly inconsistent with other Biblical passages regarding these same principles. For example: Jesus, teaching in the 'Lord's Prayer' about forgiveness, says, "God forgives our trespasses just as we forgive (the trespasses of) those who trespass against us." This seems to be slightly inconsistent with other Biblical passages describing how we are forgiven only through "Christ's blood, even the forgiveness of sins".

For some, the teachings of the Course are believed to clarify many of these types of apparent Biblical inconsistencies and shortcomings. Teachings regarding the exact mechanics of the spiritual principle of forgiveness are central to the the Course teachings. Regarding forgiveness, the Course goes into far greater detail, providing far more instruction regarding the logic of, the purpose for, and the practical application of this principle, than does the Christian Bible. Many students of the Course who are (or have been) involved in traditional Christian churches, and who have faithfully studied the Course for a significant length of time, report their sense that the teachings of the Course on forgiveness have finally clarified for them, in very practical ways, how forgiveness can now be fully realized in their daily lives.

Unreliable source quoting reliable source in "Savior" section

Moving this section and it's sources to discussion. Evidently Robert here appears on televsion. How often, or whether that still happens is really irrelelevent. The actual statement is quoted from a term paper of a student at University of Virginia for Spring Term, 2000. She is quoting Robert directly. Sure, information on Misplaced Pages must be reliable. Facts, viewpoints, theories, and arguments may only be included in articles if they have already been published by reliable and reputable sources. Articles should cite these sources whenever possible. Any unsourced material may be challenged and removed. From "Practical Study and Lifestyle", this section appears to be original commentary being made on the book. It needs to come instead from a reputible secondary source (i.e. a review...). Including it here until such a source can be found...

the Course material also advises that formality in religion is only useful if it has a clear, practical purpose. The truest type of church or formal institution for the Course is more of an inner habit of reverence for the presence of God, seen in everyone, rather than any kind of sanctified external physical building or human organization.

the Course places no specific limits on the methods by which it may be learned or taught, emphasizing that all spiritual and non-spiritual paths alike must eventually lead to the same awakening. However, according to the Course, some paths will take far longer than others, and the purpose of the Course is to minimize the time this takes. Accordingly, the Course students are free to seek out whichever learning-teaching format works best for them.

Currently, the majority of the students of the Course appear to prefer to study the Course in an informal setting, ranging from the individual the Course student who may make no effort to contact any other students of the Course, to the informal the Course study group member, who may join a small local study group that may meet on a weekly basis.

Regardless of the fact that, to date, these the Course church-like organizations appear to attract only a minority of the Course students, their impact on the larger body of the Course students has often been disproportionate to their size. These organizations often serve as a means by which the students of the Course might gather together with one another, where this wouldn't otherwise be practical.

Practical Study and Lifestyle

At least two organizations are known to present the teachings of the Course in an environment that appears to be similar in some ways to a more traditional Christian church setting. These organizations provide traditional style gathering places for weekly Sunday morning services, a pastoral staff, ordained ministers, seminary training, and many of the other institutional systems and practices that are normally associated with more traditional Christian churches. These are the Community Miracles Center, situated in the Castro district of San Francisco, California, and the Pathways of Light Center in Kiel, Wisconsin. This external link is a pointer to a term paper written by a student For Soc 452: Sociology of Religious Behavior at University of Virginia in the Spring Term of 2000 named Holly Whittaker. It is not the official opinion of the U of V as listed, and if Holly Whittaker is regarded as a significant expert in her area by independent sources, then it could be included. Anyone know if Holly has published a significant or well-known academic work, or is regarded as an important figure by those in the same field?
