Benslimane (Arabic: ابن سليمان) is a Moroccan city located in Chaouia-Ouardigha administrative region.
Etymology
The city is named after the saint Mohammed Benslimane, whose shrine is located 1 km to the south ouest.
History
Middle Ages
The region was part of the Barghawata state. After its conquest by the Almoravids then by the Almohads, several Banu Hilal and Banu Sulaym tribes were moved from Ifriqiya the region, between the 12th and the 13th century, to mix afterwards with the Berbers.
In the 14th century, Marinid dynasty install Berbers who build the city of Casablanca.
Modern period
The first urban planning of the modern city dates back to 1907, when the French army founded a military camp, called "Camp Boulhaut" with the aim to control the Moroccan countryside. The implementation of the military will be followed by the construction of a residential area for military, forming the core of the city, that will then develop along the road to Bouznika.
A major urban dynamics is driven from 1977, when the province of Benslimane was created, the city bacaming its administrative capital.
Geography
The city is located 55 km from Casablanca, 60 km from Rabat and 100 km from Khouribga. It has two urban districts oversought by a pachalik.
Demography
The city is capital of Ziaida das which is a set of Berber populations from the powerful confederation of Sanhaja.
According to the 2004 census, the city had a population of 46,478, she did however integrated throughout its history of Arab and Berber elements of various strains and absorbed between nineteenth century and twentieth century, Bniwras.
However, there have the Medakra of Arab descent, which has a caidat that bears their name (Rdadna Oulad Malak, Oulad Ali Touala, Ahlaf and Melilla). Its population is expressed with Hilaliyah Arabic.
Neighbourhoods
The city is divided into several areas such as: Hay Nejma, Hay Farah, Soufal District, Lalla Meryem District, Hay Mohammadi, Al Qods District, The Oaks District, Gardens District, Karima District, Hay Hassani as well as other administrative and industrial areas.
