Misplaced Pages:Articles for deletion/Travel Cuts
Ardenn, I do not believe that I have attacked you personally. Please explain why you believe that I have. The issue that I have raised is whether "non-notability" is a grounds for deletion, not you. Many deletionists do use "non-notability" as if it were an accepted grounds for deletion, so other contributors, like you, seem to believe that it is policy. I have not been able to find anywhere in Misplaced Pages policy that it is. Perhaps you could point out something that I have missed. Ground Zero | t 11:10, 28 June 2006 (UTC)
- I guess that what I wrote was not as clear as it could have been: let me make it clear that I am not calling you a deletionist. I said that "non-notability" was a term that deletionists bandy about as if it were grounds for deletion. Ground Zero | t 12:29, 28 June 2006 (UTC)
Please don't bite the newcomers
Hi. I try to welcome new editors that post new, useful articles, then I track them for a few days afterwards I noticed you proposed Slagish's first article, "Toronto Region -- Statistics Canada Research Data Centre (Toronto RDC)" for deletion, then reverted his edits to "University of Toronto" for violating Canadian English spelling rules. Take a look at my comments on his talk page -- I think you're a little confused on the spelling issue if you look at the links I included. Also, I'm not sure "Who cares" is exactly a useful or tactful basis for recommending article deletion. Take a look at WP:BITE and WP:CIVIL (the Examples) section.
I encourage you to give Slagish a break for a while and not follow him around to reverse his edits. He's brand-new and editing in good faith. I suggest you let him work on his Toronto RDC stub a little more. I'd hate to turn off a potentially productive new editor.
Thanks! --A. B. 03:05, 29 June 2006 (UTC)
- Ardenn, thanks for your patience with new contributor Slagish -- I notice you later helped him with links and categories for his Toronto Region -- Statistics Canada Research Data Centre (Toronto RDC) article . Statistical research is not exactly my cup of tea either, but the centre did seem like it would meet Misplaced Pages's notability criteria once the article was expanded.
- Also, I'm glad to learn you weren't following Slagish around as I'd initially thought. I had noticed that within one or two minutes, you'd both PROD'ed his first article and reverted his edit on another, so I thought maybe you were following him or had an itchy trigger finger.
Hi Ardenn - How do I flag a section as not NPOV? Thanks.
University of Toronto
I've reverted your edits. It is not an American-centered project, and the article should use Canadian English. If you have a problem with that, too bad. See WP:CIVILITY and WP:DICK. There is a policy on what spelling should be used, I'm looking for it. Ardenn 19:12, 29 June 2006 (UTC)
- In the future, I would advise that you calm yourself in situations like these before you 'attack' a person and further quote rules that have nothing to do with the situation at hand. And what's this supposed to mean: "If you have a problem with that, too bad"? — you do not own the article. I too was looking at the convention for spelling and discovered that you were right, and was just about to revert it. Anyway, could you be a little less confrontational? It really goes a long way in ensuring that others do not snap back at you. Oran e (t) (c) (e) 19:24, 29 June 2006 (UTC)
PS: In case you didn't know, the article that you quoted at me says "Telling someone "Don't be a dick" is something of a dick-move in itself, so don't bandy the criticism about lightly." Oran e (t) (c) (e) 19:27, 29 June 2006 (UTC)
- This pair of sentences, taken together, show Ardenn's ironic sense of humour: "If you have a problem with that, too bad. See WP:CIVILITY and WP:DICK." Ground Zero | t 19:50, 29 June 2006 (UTC)
- In the future, I would advise you, since you are an admin, to read your policies and WP:MoS before you revert. It's your job to know these things, not mine. I'm not an admin. --Ardenn 19:37, 29 June 2006 (UTC)
- As an admin, I expect you to have higher standards than the rest of us. Ardenn 19:39, 29 June 2006 (UTC)
- Don't give me this bull. Admin or not, there is simply no way that someone can know all the policies in all areas of Misplaced Pages. All admins are regular users too, and they are expected to make mistakes now and then, so don't bring this to me. And, yes, it is also your job to know these things. Oran e (t) (c) (e) 20:56, 29 June 2006 (UTC)
canadian charities
Misplaced Pages:Categories for deletion/Log/2006 June 22#Charities by country is pretty unambiguous in its outcome. May I ask why you are reversing it? If you feel that the result was less than optimal, I would suggest cfr'ing it again, or trying deletion review, thanks. — Jun. 30, '06 <freak|talk>
What is up with your edit summaries of "rvv"? Changing categories per a CFD outcome is clearly not vandalism! You know, we even have policies that say that calling non-vandalism edits vandalism is a bad thing, and you are doing it on a massive scale. --Cyde↔Weys 18:43, 30 June 2006 (UTC)
It's not a regional issue, it's a standard naming convention issue. Demonyms should be avoided in category names whenever possible, and analagous categories for different countries should follow a predictable pattern, especially due to the fact that redirects do not work (well) with categories. — Jun. 30, '06 <freak|talk>
I didn't violate any policies. I was unfairly blocked. Ardenn 18:52, 30 June 2006 (UTC)
Blocked
You have been blocked for a "cool-off" period. You've been warned by other admins regarding the category Category:Charities based in Canada. Please note that you cannot arbitrarily reverse a decision made by consensus. Furthermore, there was a Canadian involved in the discussion. Bastique▼ voir 18:53, 30 June 2006 (UTC)

Firefox browser / Google Toolbar
Are you using the above software combination? If so, that probably explains this edit. A bug in the Google Toolbar extension for Firefox causes page text to sometimes be cut off when it's saved. This occurs even when the extension is disabled (which happened to me) and the only current solution is to uninstall it.
I recommend the Googlebar as an alternative extension. —David Levy 21:18, 30 June 2006 (UTC)
- Thanks for the advice. I've turned off the Google toolbar. I try to watch that articles don't get cut off, but sometimes I miss one. Thanks again. Ardenn 21:25, 30 June 2006 (UTC)
- You're welcome! I'm not sure what you meant by "turned off," so I'll remind you that disabling the extension doesn't seem to help. (I had the extension disabled, but I still experienced the problem until I actually uninstalled it.) —David Levy 21:30, 30 June 2006 (UTC)
- How do you uninstall it? I can't seen to find it in the programs list under the control panel on Win2K. Thanks. Ardenn 21:33, 30 June 2006 (UTC)
- 1. In Firefox, click on "Tools" near the top of the window.
- 2. Select "Extensions."
- 3. Find and select "Google Toolbar" on the scroll menu.
- 4. Click on the "Uninstall" button.
- 5. When the confirmation window appears, select "OK."
- 6. Close all Firefox windows. When you restart the browser, the extension should be gone.

Same to you. I spent the day skydiving for the first time! It was beautiful out when I jumped, but now it's all rainy, so I guess I won't be going out to watch fireworks tonight. How's the weather in Ottawa? Gonna go see fireworks? OzLawyer 23:39, 1 July 2006 (UTC)

Re Undoing other people's edits repeatedly
I am of the impression that 3RR does not apply for reverting vandalism or spam. I always try my darndest to stay way clear of 3RR, and if there is anything not clear cut, I always discuss it on talk pages rather than revert repeatedly. I am not sure which reverts you specifically refer to, but if I acted too quickly I do apologise to whoever was affected. I would appreciate if you could be more specific, though, so I can try to improve my conduct. Haakon 16:21, 3 July 2006 (UTC)

Myocad
Hello Ardenn, I was just wondering - why did you decide to remove the blurb about myocad from the ocad wikipedia article? They are, after all, the largest and most interdisciplinary student organization at the school. Care to clarify your choice?

External link on domain kiting
I wanted to add this important ressource to the article.
http://www.h05t.com/domain-name/how-to-spot-domain-kiting-registrars
Is there a particular reason why you deleted it?
The two link do not give any way to find domain kiting registrars. The link I added is the only resource on the web. Please get me back on that.

Re: your edit summary at Template:GPC
Re: . I'm not targeting anything. I remove violations as I find them. If you are aware of other fair use violations, you are free to remove them as they violate Misplaced Pages policy as described at Misplaced Pages:Fair use criteria item #9 and quite possibly copyright law as well. Image removal at Gallery of Scout and Guide national emblems
Hi Ardenn, you removed nearly all content of Gallery of Scout and Guide national emblems with the explanation Removing fair use image(s) per terms of Misplaced Pages:Fair_use#Policy item #9 (please see User:Durin/Removal of fair use images for further explanation). Since I can't see how Misplaced Pages:Fair_use#Policy #9 should apply to an article in the main namespace, I reverted your edit. Could you please explain the exact reason why you removed the images? --jergen 07:09, 11 July 2006 (UTC)
- The same question for Scouting in Ontario. --jergen 07:13, 11 July 2006 (UTC)
- Ardenn, it's great that you've taken up fair use violation removal. I really appreciate it as this problem is rampant in Misplaced Pages and needs attention! However, the issue that Jergen raises above is valid. It's ok to use copyrighted material in the main article namespace under terms of fair use if the copyrighted material applies directly to the subject of the article. Thus, your removals of these images from the main article namespaces that you've made, such as , have been reverted because the removals were improper. Your other work in the template space, such as is spot on! Keep it up! I might suggest though that instead of linking to my page in the edit summary, you may wish to link to Misplaced Pages:Removal of fair use images instead. I intend on removing my page in the near future, and instead linking to that page. Thanks, and again bravo for good work! --Durin 15:30, 11 July 2006 (UTC)
- Ditto to all the above. Fair use in articles is perfectly ok by all wiki rules. Rlevse 10:12, 13 July 2006 (UTC)
Naming convention
If you read carefully the Canadian Education Wiki Project, when an Article is about a French School, we keep the french name.
--Yongblood 02:33, 13 July 2006 (UTC)
Okay but I mean... It's the name of the establishement. You can't change the name of an ESTABLISHEMENT.
--Yongblood 02:39, 13 July 2006 (UTC)
Yes you are. The article is about the establishement, therefore, I decided to put the name of the establishement as the title.
In the article, in the beginning, I clearly put École secondaire publique De La Salle (De La Salle Secondary School).
--Yongblood 02:42, 13 July 2006 (UTC)
Okay so there is no problem anymore if I put it that way? Title : French Name of the school... and in the article in parenthesis the english equivalent?
Great :).

Consensus vote
Hi Ardenn, I believe I have found a solution to the logo crisis. I am calling for a consensus vote for the restoration of political party logos in templates, based on a not withstanting type clause, in the rule that was used to remove them. Actually, I'm starting to get the picture. However, what I want you to understand is that confronting people and proclaiming what they should or shouldn't know is now way to get your point across. I have not attacked you, but merely reprimand you for your childish behaviour, which you continue to show, despite my attempt(s) to reason with you. Be nice to people, and the attitude will be reciprocated. Attitude like this gets you nowhere (and I am going to assert this every chance that I get). Orane (talk • cont.) 03:21, 17 July 2006 (UTC)

Same-Sex Marriage in New Jersey
What do you want me to do with this article that I wrote in order so that it complies with the guidelines, because it keeps getting reverted. I noticed the "POV" is no longer there but the "WIKIFY" is. It's obviously not easy to just remove it from the page because you must be on top of this because it reappears shortly thereafter, not sure how lol.
Okay I will try to "Wikify" but what is it precisely that the page needs more of? References/Links? Because there are a few there. In any event, how do I add the page to the main SSM table. I know it is (( SSM }} that makes the table show up, but for the life of me I don't know how to put "NJ" in there along with "NY" "WA" and "CA". Thank you.

POV?
Since you are an experienced user, would this be considered a strong POV:
The University of Western Ontario (Western or UWO) is a coeducational, non-denominational, research-intensive university located in London, Ontario, on one of the most beautiful campuses in Canada. Western is one of the country's leading and most prestigious universities, consistently placing in the top three of Maclean's national university rankings. The University boasts more 3M award-winning faculty than any other Ontario University. <--- (theres no evidence supporting this statement)
Green Party of Ontario
Ardenn, I think you are totally wrong to bulk reverse my entire edit. Of course, I am not saying that my version can’t be improved upon, but the original version is very, very flawed.
1. Your are reversing back to a version that is poorly worded and organized in a number of sections. For example:
- “Perhaps accordingly, it is a strong supporter of electoral reform such as that discussed in May 2005 for British Columbia: a referendum on single transferable vote (see British Columbia electoral reform referendum, 2005). Also in November 2005 PEI held a similar referendum on mixed proportional representation (see PEI electoral reform referendum, 2005) and an Ontario electoral reform referendum, 2007 is also planned.”
Very poorly worded and confusing.
- “The elements of green politics it emphasizes, including a green tax shift there are almost libertarian in character. For this reason they are sometimes called Blue Greens or Green Tories.”
Because they are almost libertarian, they are called Green Tories? Does that make sense to you? That’s two different political philosophies in my books. It’s like saying because they are almost radical, they are called conservative. It makes no sense.
2. I think many of my edits fix problems of “verifiability”
- it is sometimes criticized by leftists as being eco-capitalist and one of the "furthest right" Green Parties in North America
If "furthest right" is going to be in quotes, shouldn't this quote be attributed to a prominent, non-party-affiliated leftist before being allowed?
- Many key members are recruits from the former centrist Progressive Conservative Party of Canada…
“Many key members”? If it’s “many”, how about naming more than one name … especially since the one name given is of a person who does not hold an official position within the party. What does “many” mean anyway? 90%? 50% 15%?
- "...including the party's only elected politician, Elio Di Iorio"
Directly below this statement is a list of eight elected Greens including Di Iorio. How is he the only elected politician?
- “this strategy … does not prevent Greens from cooperating on the municipal and regional level with more left-wing parties.”
First, all municipal politicians are (at least technically) independents - so this statement is invalid right there. Second, the writer is stating as fact that there is a more left-wing party in Ontario. That is POV. Some would say yes, some would say no. If you ask me, much of this was written by an NDP supporter looking to paint his/her party as the only “truly left” party / voting option for “left”-thinking people.
- “perhaps due largely to reversals by Dalton McGuinty…
And perhaps not at all due to reversals by Dalton McGuinty. Perhaps the increased support for the GPO is due to the party’s own merits, runoff from increased support for the federal Greens or some other reason. If this theory is going to be stated, it should stated whose theory it is / based on what research.
