RuneScape skills are abilities that enable players to carry out various tasks. Some skills are restricted to members who pay a monthly fee to play (P2P), and some are available only in the newer version of the game. Players gain experience in a skill when they perform tasks, or train, in that skill. The number of experience points earned determines the player's level in the skill. As players increase their levels, they gain new abilities in the skill, some of which are restricted to P2P players. The new abilities gained, in turn, reward players with more experience points to compensate for the exponential increase in experience needed to reach each new level.

With the exception of the first few levels, the experience needed to increase a level is roughly 1.1 times the experience required for the previous level. Experience requirements double approximately every 7 levels.

Combat Skills

Combat is itself not a trainable skill; instead, combat level is calculated from the seven combat skills.

Attack, which determines the chance of a successful strike and which weapons players can wield, is trained by using the "accurate" style of combat with most melee weapons.

Strength, which determines the maximum damage a player can deal, is trained by using the "aggressive" style of combat with most melee weapons. A certain strength level is required to wear and wield some types of Barrows armour/weapons.

Defence, which determines the chance of receiving no damage during an opponent's attack and the types of armours that can be worn, is trained by using the "defensive" style of combat with most melee weapons, by using the "long-range" style with most ranged weapons, and by having a spell set when using a magic staff or wand.

Hitpoints, which determines how many damage points players can sustain before they die., is trained as a side affect of any combat, in a set ratio with the combat skill used.

Magic, which determines what spells can be used and the amount of damage they can cause, is trained by using runes to cast spells. Magic can be trained when players are not engaged in combat as many spells are not combat oriented, such as teleport and enchant spells.

Ranged, which determines the chance of hitting an opponent as well as the amount of damage done, is trained by using ranged weapons in combat. The ranged levels also determine the equipment that can be used. Also the level indicates what armour can be used. There are many different types of ranged weapons available.

Prayer, which determines what prayers are available to the player as well as how long those prayers will remain active before players must recharge their prayer points at an altar, is trained by burying the bones that are dropped when creatures die, by worshipping the Ectofuntus in Port Phasmatys, or by killing ghasts. Prayer is considered beneficial by most as it may provide invincibility against certain attacks or increase players' power. Originally called necromancy in the extremely early stages of RuneScape, it was the last of the original skills for which players were able to reach maximum levels.

Extracting Skills

Fishing requires a player to use a fishing tool with a fishing spot to catch fish. Although some species of fish are restricted to P2P, players can use different types of fishing equipment to catch different kinds of fish, and an occasional item in the process. Many players fish so they can sell their catch, especially lobsters and sharks, to other players. Fish can be sold raw, allowing purchasers to train their cooking skill; however, most fish is sold cooked, ready to be eaten when hitpoints are low.

Mining requires players to use pickaxes to extract ores, coal, rune or pure essence, gems, clay, and other materials from mining rocks. Players can extract more valuable ores and materials as their skill levels increase. The materials extracted are used in the processing skills of smithing, crafting, and runecrafting. Some specialty items that can be mined are used in the completion of quests or mini-games. Many people choose to mine as much as they can, so they can mine coal. Coal is a common ore, as it is needed for all weapons (and armour) steel and above, though it takes quite a while to respawn.

Woodcutting requires players to use a hatchet, often simply called an axe, to chop down trees. Lower level trees yield only one log each before they must respawn; higher level trees, such as oak and yew, yield several logs. Players can use better hatchets as their skill levels increase, allowing them to chop trees more quickly, with the exception of the dragon woodcutting axe, which only cuts at the same speed as a rune axe. The woodcutting skill also allows players to use canoes to travel quickly up and down the River Lum. Higher woodcutting experience allows players to fashion more efficient and stable canoes, which in turn allow players to travel further before the canoes sink. Players can build and board canoes at Lumbridge, the Champions Guild, Barbarian Village, and Edgeville. Canoes can travel to these four destinations plus the level 35 wilderness. Players do not have to be members of the Champions Guild to travel to it by canoe as the station is not located inside the guild itself.

Farming allows players to grow various vegetables, flowers, hops, herbs, bushes, trees, and other plants from seeds, which can be purchased, pickpocketed, harvested from some plants, or obtained from various monsters drops and random events. Players with higher farming skill levels could also make scarecrows.

Processing Skills

Main article: Cooking (RuneScape)

Cooking requires players to acquire the raw ingredients of the food they wish to prepare and to have access to a heat source (such as a range, clay oven, fire, or spit). Foods can be split into two categories:

  • fish and other items that can be cooked without further preparation
  • cakes, pies, and other foods that require preparation before they are cooked

The rarer or more difficult to prepare foods generally give the player more experience and restore more health than more common ones.

Crafting allows players to make various items with traditional crafting skills such as potterymaking, glassblowing, leatherworking, goldsmithing, weaving, and silversmithing. One of the main uses of crafting is making high level jewellery, which can in turn be enchanted with the magic skill to be turned into useful items, such as rings of recoil that deal damage to opponents as the wearer receives damage.

Firemaking allows players to cook food when a range or oven is not near to hand. Fires made using higher level logs burn no longer than those made from lower level logs; the length of time the fire burns is random.

Fletching is the skill used to make arrows, bows, and other projectile weapons from raw materials found throughout RuneScape. Rarer types of wood make better bows that shoot more accurately.

Herblore involves mixing potions from herbs and other ingredients.

Runecrafting allows players to create the runes required for casting magic in RuneScape. This skill is not available in RuneScape Classic. Players must complete the Rune Mysteries quest in order to practice this skill, which requires rune essence and either a talisman or an enchanted tiara.

Smithing uses the ores obtained from mining to make armour and weapons, as well as many other items. There are two stages of smithing: smelting ore into bars and forging bars into equipment. Interestingly, certain items, such as black metal and pickaxes, cannot be smithed.

Herblore is used for creating a variety of potions that give players temporary boosts to statistics, restore attributes, remove poison, and other effects. Before players can use herblore, they need to complete the Druidic Ritual quest.

Main article: Construction (RuneScape)

Construction allows players to purchase and upgrade player-owned houses(POHs), where they can play games or engage in combat with friends, create furniture or teleportation tablets to sell, or train in their own dungeons.

Other Skills

File:Runescape skill agility.gif
Agility allows players to access shortcuts, such as the ability to cross a river via a fallen log.

Agility is a P2P skill used to access remote areas and to take shortcuts, especially in the wilderness and on some quests. As the agility skill level increases the stamina regeneration rate increases, which helps players run farther distances.

File:Runescape skill slayer.gif

Slayer is a P2P skill that allows players to kill slayer monsters that would otherwise be impossible to kill. To train slayer skill, a player must get an assignment from slayer masters. The assignment is to defeat a certain number of a certain monster. Many slayer monsters require innovative methods and special equipment to kill. Slayer monsters usually drop better armour and equipment than other monsters at similar levels.

Thieving is a P2P skill that allows a player to pickpocket NPCs, to steal from market stalls and chests, and to unlock doors using unorthodox methods.

Speculated skills

Summoning

It has been found that some traces of this "skill" are already in RuneScape. Many NPC's summon monsters and other magical energies. Malignus Mortifer, the necromancer south of Falador summons weak undead monsters (and sometimes mushrooms), and the wizard Grayzag, at the top of wizard's tower, summons imps to fight for him. Also, when the player asks him to teach him/her how to summon monsters, he replies by saying "Maybe you will learn to summon creatures one day" or words to that effect. The wizard in the top of wizard tower claims to be summoning lesser demons to fight. Also a recent quest, "Recipe For Disaster" included the "Culinaromancer" who summons monsters with altered names associated with cooking. Also during the "evil dave" part of the quest, evil dave says he has been working on summoning demons but can only summon hellrats

Some Jagex moderators have stated that instead of Summoning being a new skill altogether, it will be a part of the already existing Magic skill instead.

It has been noted that Summoning and Necromancy are different arts. It has also been noted that in the extremely early versions of RuneScape, the skill now referred to as prayer was called necromancy.

However, there are clues in certain god letters that summoning will just be part of magic with a new rune. Life rune images were found in the RuneScape Classic image database, although they were never added into the game. If they were, they most probably would have been used for summoning. Jagex moderators have confirmed that Life Runes did once exist in what is now referred to as RuneScape Classic, however they had no use for them and removed them completely from the game.

Some people believe that Summoning may never be introduced into the game, due to the fact that a Jagex moderator once said that it probably won't make it into RuneScape, because it's too controversial.

Hunting

On 4 June 2006 it was found that in the bug-reporting section on RuneScape's website that there were 23 skills to report a bug in. The new one was called Hunting, and Jagex soon removed the entry from the site. Hunting was neither confirmed nor denied, leading many to believe that it is a future skill.
