Thomaeus was born in Durrës, Albania in an Albanian origin family. At the University of Padua he achieved fame as the first professor to teach Aristotle in the original language, and had among his students a young Nicholas Copernicus. He was praised by Erasmus of Rotterdam for his polymath knowledge.
