Jon Kimura Parker, OC (born 25 December 1959) is a Canadian pianist.
Biography
"Jackie" was born in Vancouver, Canada, the son of Keiko Parker, a piano and music theory teacher, and John E. Parker, a pharmacist. He made his debut with the Vancouver Youth Orchestra when he was five. He studied with his uncle, Edward Parker. Other influential teachers include Kum-Sing Lee (at theVancouver Academy of Music), Robin Wood, and Marek Jablonski. He later studied at The Juilliard School under Adele Marcus. His brother James Parker is also a pianist.
Career
He is the recipient of many international awards, and has won famous international competitions, including the prestigious Leeds International Pianoforte Competition in 1984 at the age of 24. Parker received the National Arts Centre Award in 1996, a companion award of the Governor General's Performing Arts Awards. He was made an Officer of the Order of Canada in 1999.
He performs worldwide.
Parker has recorded works by Chopin, Tchaikovsky and Prokofiev. His recordings appear on CBC Records and the Telarc labels, among others. Most recent recording, "Jon Kimura Parker: Rite" is his own arrangement of both Stravinky's Rite of Spring and Petrouchka. In 2015 he released a recording "Fantasy" which includes fantasies by Schubert, Schumann, Mozart, DiLiberto and Hirtz.
Performance trademarks: warm stage presence, explosive octaves (he sometimes rises off the bench mid-performance), and an encores by such varied composers such as Oscar Peterson, Chick Corea, Danny Elfman (The Simpsons), Billy Joel, or Elton John.
He is currently Professor of Piano at The Shepherd School of Music, Rice University in Houston, Texas. He is a founding member of the Montrose Trio with violinist Martin Beaver and cellist Clive Greensmith. In 2015 he and former Police drummer Stewart Copeland formed the group "Off the Score" with Yoon Kwon, Marlon Martinez and Judd Miller.
